About this project
We met our original goal in only 2 weeks, so now we are trying to double it! If we do, we will send everyone who backs the project a free zipper pouch (made from bike inner tubes) with any pledge over $10. Thank you so much for your encouragement and support.
It's a sleek, sensible purse that attaches to your bike, allowing you a smooth ride without adjusting your purse straps or hauling around your bike gear.
The Athena Clutch is made in the USA from repurposed materials, so by supporting this project you are helping to reduce landfill waste, boost the local economy, support fair wages, and encourage style while biking.
Traditional purses slide around while riding, leaving you distracted and riding one-handed while you adjust. Stuffing your purse inside a bike bag leaves you hauling around bulky gear at your destination. Many bike bags are too casual for work or out on the town.
The Athena Clutch addresses these frustrations with an upscale appearance and simple bike attachments that don't look like gear. It was designed and tested by cyclists who bike year-round, and who were tired of compromising style for function.
The Athena Clutch quickly clips to your handlebars, top tube, or rear rack with two reflective straps that stay on your bike. Simply drop the clutch's metal rings onto the straps' clips.
The straps are designed to fit nearly every bike on the planet. We’ve tested them on handlebars of all shapes and sizes, a variety of rear racks, and on top tubes ranging from skinny road racers to jumbo cargo bikes. Because you can adjust both the straps’ circumference and distance from each other, you can customize the setup to perfectly fit your bike and your style.
Primarily upcycled materials that would otherwise go to the landfill:
- Retired bike tubes, collected from local bike shops
- Colorful vinyl from banners and billboards, collected from local businesses
- Discarded scrap fabrics from the local banner printing industry
- Reflective leftovers from street signs
For the clutch's closure, we chose a heavy duty zipper that won't wear out or split open. The flap closes with gentle magnets to keep the profile neat and sharp.
The bags will be built entirely in Colorado, USA. Go 'Merica!
Because we use upcycled fabrics, no two clutches are exactly the same. Choose from an exterior made from (1) black bike inner tubes, (2) banners in warm color tones, or (3) banners in cool color tones. Interior colors also vary.
This clutch is unique on several counts. It is:
- Locally manufactured in the USA
- Made from upcycled, repurposed materials, lowering the clutch's environmental impact
- Sophisticated and functional
- Works on any bike, from skinny road bikes to monster cargo bikes
- Works with any outfit, dressed up or down
- Rugged and resistant to the elements
The Athena Clutch is loaded with sweet features:
- Reflective triangle for visibility while biking at night (or in the club!)
- Two metal rings- for attaching the clutch to your bike- tuck behind the hand strap when not in use
- Magnetic flap closure
- Zippered main pocket
- Interior sleeve pocket with two compartments for cell phone and keys
- Hand strap for an easy, secure grip
Check out the photos to see our progress so far. The production model will be an improved, polished version of our fully functional prototype.
We already have great local partners in place for sourcing the upcycled materials and sewing the bags. All we need is your support to make The Athena Clutch a reality!
Many months of experimentation, testing, tweaking (not twerking), and good old trial-and-error led us to our current prototypes.
Your much-appreciated support through Kickstarter will help generate resources to cover development, production, and outreach for The Athena Clutch. Funding these hard costs will allow us to launch this by-women, for-women product.
We've poured our hearts into the development of this bag. You'll receive not only rad rewards for supporting us, but also major good karma. Throughout the process we will be updating with pictures of the project's development so you can see the process first hand, illustrating the effects of your investment.
Check out the column on the right for details on our rewards packages. Images of each reward are shown below. For more details, message us or check out GreenGuruGear.com.
Kyla designed the Athena Clutch with the valuable input of Davidson Lewis, the founder of Green Guru and Ecologic Designs, and by incorporating suggestions from fabulous ladies who bike. Special thanks to the wonderful Jezryl Castelo, who lent an invaluable hand every step of the way, and to Rob Quinn for our fine video. Thank you for pouring your time, energy, and heart into this project. Thank you also to Jillian Betterly for snapping stellar photos, to Sarah Nicholson for helping out with our logo, to Andrea Flanagan for business planning and marketing direction, and to Bonnie Shoup for design insights. It takes a village!

Risks and challenges
Once funded, we will incorporate your feedback from the project over two weeks to perfect the design. We'll then build The Athena Clutch through our local Colorado manufacturer for 60 days. Once the manufacturing is complete, it will take up to two weeks to package and ship the rewards. We'll keep you updated throughout the process, so there won't be any surprises.
RISKS AND CHALLENGES
We’re dedicated and prepared to launch the The Athena Clutch. Production and fulfillment are ready to go, so we need only your support of the project to make this idea a reality.
While our manufacturers are prepared for high demand, there are always unforeseen circumstances that could result in a later delivery. That being said, we're all in this together. We want to make sure you're well-informed as things progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
