Perfect for everyone ages 12 & up, Ate the Game is a combination of word-guessing fun and role-playing silliness. Players want their team to guess as many Ate Cards as possible over the course of the game. But there's a catch-- the Mandate cards make clue-giving more challenging and way more ridiculous.
It's for anyone looking to create a festive game night, break the ice, forge new friendships, or enliven family time. It's also great for teachers/students looking for an entertaining and interactive game for vocabulary building. Any way you play it, it's sure to be active, laugh-out-loud fun!
The performing player, aka the Mandator, draws one Ate Card and one Mandate card.
The Mandator has 60-seconds to get their team to guess as many Ate Cards as possible all while performing the role-playing prompt on the Mandate Card. Any kind of clue-giving is fair game -- speaking, singing, acting, etc. -- just as long as no words from the official definition are used. Remember: The team's goal is to guess as many Ate Words as possible in 60-seconds!
At the end of the 60-seconds, the playing team has one chance to guess the Mandator's Mandate Card for an additional point. Also, if the Mandator is in the middle of conveying their clue when time is up, the opposing team has one chance to steal the word for a value of two points!
The game is over is when every player has gone twice as the Mandator. The team with the highest score wins!

When Etan and Nellie first met a few years ago, it was game at first sight. What started out as an absurd riff on the word validate, quickly grew into an obsession with all words that end in the suffix -ate. Over the course of four years, Nellie and Etan organized game nights in which they invited their friends and family to help them narrow down the rules. Eventually, Nellie and Etan honed in on the concept and developed a rule-set that combined the awesome powers of word-guessing with the hilarity of improv. From the beginning, Ate the Game has been about having fun and making friends, an icebreaker as much as a laugh maker.
Based in New York, Nellie does marketing by day and game making by night. Her passion for words, story, and design lent themselves well on this wild and wacky game-creating journey.
A born-and-raised Brooklynite living in LA, Etan is part-TV writer, part-game maker. With an equal passion for words, story and silly socializing, it was only natural that Etan would team up with Nellie to make Ate the Game a reality.
Tania Coronado, Lead Creative of type:set design studio, is the creative pixel pusher behind the Ate the Game aesthetic. A full-time mama bear during the day, she now spends her evenings toiling away on design puzzles.
After four years in development, perfecting the design and structure of play we're ready to bring Ate the Game to the masses. But we can't do it without the help of generous people like you! If we reach our goal we'll have enough money to cover all of the costs associated with designing, developing, manufacturing, and shipping our product. It's no easy feat, but we're confident that we'll be able to provide our backers with a unique experience, a beautiful package, cool collectible rewards, and a game that can played over and over again.
Risks and challenges
As with any business endeavor helmed by two organized, hard-working game makers, we’re aiming for few risks and even fewer challenges. Thanks to a precedent set by other successfully funded Kickstarter games and through the consultation of experts in various fields, we have a strong sense of the manufacturing and shipping process. We have already negotiated with a professional printer in India (while our swag will be printed in the New York tri-state area) and are ready to press the button once we are funded. We’ll work diligently to fulfill our promise to ship the games and rewards to our backers as soon as humanly possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
