Create over 250 functional and tested 3d printable files
We will create, print, photograph, and catalog over 250 3D printable items and send you the files on a flashdrive.
The problem: There is no major repository of TESTED 3D printable files. 3D printing technology will not move into the hands of the non-tech/hacker crowd of mainstream America until your average person can print files without ever having to know anything about CAD, manifold edges, etc. There are a number of mega-file sites with 1,000's of files, however most of the files found there have never been printed! Also, there is no decision tree format to the sites, so finding what you need is very difficult. Have you every searched for an 11mm wrench and found designs for yoda heads and vases? I have...
The solution: Us! Well, we are the beginning of the solution...
Our project is to create a repository of over 250 files/designs (more if we get enough backing, hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink) that can be printed from a 3D printer and are incredibly useful in one's life.
For EVERY file, we will:
1) Create it. Either from scratch, or by modifying a public domain file.
2) Test it. For non-manifold issues as well as other problems.
3) Print it! Yes, we will print EVERY file out and test it to make sure it works.
4) Photograph it post printing. So you can see what you will be printing. And if possible, we will photograph the object in use.
5) Catalog it. Provide information on the build such as the printer used, weight, print time, infill, etc.
What will we be creating/printing, you ask? We wish to begin with usable things that the average person in America would use a printer for: Household tools, light-switch covers, bowls, cups, flatware, soap trays, etc. By the way, we do take requests! If you back us, let us know what kind of objects you would like to see in the list! We are wide open.
Rewards: In addition to getting the files (in .stl format), backers may receive the awesome printed objects below! Thanks to Omnomnom for the tools to create our Grumpy Cat and Giorgio Tsoukalos 3D memes!
Why do we need money?
We need more printing capability then we currently have! We wish to have either a Makerbot 2X, 3Dtouch, or comparable printer. We feel that these units are closest to the type of printer that the average person will end out having in their homes. If you know printers well and have other suggestions, please let us know. (we do not wish to promote the Cube, due to its exorbitant pricing for plastic)
Also, we will actually be printing every object! The time and plastic alone is a huge expense...
We will deliver files via mailed flashdrives. If you prefer you could download files via ftp from a site we will set up for this purpose, but this is not necessary.
What can you do with these files?
Use them to make great things quickly and with confidence. No more fiddling around large websites to find the object you need, the files you need will already by on your computer/flash drive. If you are in the industry, you can include them with software starter packs that come with new printers as well. However, you cannot sell them! You have rights to distribute, but not to sell.
The below list is a partial proposed list of objects to produce. This should help give an idea of what we are looking to do.
Risks and challenges
Currently we do not have the print capacity to take on the amount of printing for this project. We will need to purchase a higher end home 3d printer, such as the makerbot 2X or the 3dTouch. Both of these companies have a lag time on production. This could delay our testing of the prints, but not the creation of the files themselves.
That's it! No other risks! We just need to get a better printer, compile files, and test them out. But we cannot do that without funding!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
