About this project
********** WOW **********
Thanks to all of you, we HIT OUR GOAL!!! Amazingly there is still some time left in the Kickstarter, which means the sky is the limit! We have proposed a couple of 'stretch goals' which relate to our initial goal of funding vinyl pressing. These stretch goals include:
At $8000 - We'll be able to printing full-cover original artwork for the Chits vinyl.
At $9000 - We can finally revamp the structure of our website so that we no longer have to rely on third-party distribution for vinyl and merchandise.
THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT!!!
WE LOVE YOU!!!
- Astro Nautico
Astro Nautico began in 2008 as a radio show on CKUT 90.3FM in Montreal, Canada. Hosted by Paul Jones, it was a 4-6am Thursday morning exploration into all forms of soulful electronic music.
In 2009, childhood friends Kuhn and Obey City moved back to NY and joined Paul in forming the skeleton of Astro Nautico. Armed with a blogspot and an appetite for sharing new sounds, the crew embarked on its maiden voyage with Atlantics Vol. 1 that December.
Exactly one year after Atlantics Vol. 1, Kuhn’s Quiet Nights remix EP was released on Astro Nautico in December of 2010.
In 2011, Astro became a bi-monthly resident at Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (with mixed results).
The following summer found Astro Nautico launching their new website, which coincided with the release of Obey City’s Melted Magic EP. This marked the point where Astro Nautico began releasing music from artists outside of the core three founding members, beginning with Howse’s Trakz EP.
In the next year, they went on to release music from artists such as RAJA, The Range, Time Wharp, Space Ghost and many more, while maintaining an internet presence through a series of guest mixes called ASTROCASTS.
RAJA - Vapor Trails [Jeans Wilder Redux]
The Range - The Big Dip
Time Wharp - yrLyf
Space Ghost - Sneaky/Sensual
In July of 2012, they began throwing a monthly event at FREECANDY, and this time it was a success. They have continued to throw this event every month up until now, nearing their one year anniversary. It is a perfect place to experience the audio and visual aesthetic that the label has cultivated.
Up until this point, Astro Nautico has only released music for free in a digital format. Without the financial means necessary, the thought of pressing vinyl was always a pipe dream. However, spurred on by the inspiring submission of a demo EP from Chits perfectly formatted for vinyl - as well as their recent successes - it seems that the time for Astro Nautico to begin pressing physical releases has finally arrived.
We first met Zach aka Chits as we meet many new artists - over the internet. He sent a batch of his songs to Kuhn, which led to the inclusion of his stellar track “I Know U” on our compilation Atlantics Vol. 2 released in 2012.
We continued to stay in touch as he periodically sent us new music. Eventually, we received a collection of songs that worked harmoniously as a record and given Zach’s appreciation of vinyl, we decided that it would be the perfect EP to initiate our production of physical releases.
A2. Looking So Good
B1. Custom Hype
B2. In Your Eyes
Chit's Custom Hype EP is a thoughtfully crafted record full of subtle, shifting arrangements and emotional depth that reaches far beyond the years of its creator. It works not only as an album suited for both headphones and the club, but also as a genre-blurring piece of modern, timeless music.
With your help Astro Nautico will finally be able to make the leap into its next stage of development and enter the world of vinyl production.
***In reference to the future vinyl releases mentioned in rewards***
We intend for this kickstarter to launch the first in an extended series of vinyl releases by various artists on Astro Nautico. The particular details of those releases are not yet finalized but you're gonna love the way they sound - we guarantee it.
Risks and challenges
The actual production of vinyl is a lengthy and unpredictable process which is part of the reason CDs took over in the 1980s. Today, there are still many problems that can arise in the plant, from delays to bad pressings. There may end up being several back-and-forth exchanges between ourselves and the pressing company in order to get it sounding and looking right. Furthermore, because we’ll be shipping out all of the vinyl ourselves, we will have to overcome any difficulties we may encounter with distribution.
Despite these possible hurdles, we will be diligently working around the clock to produce the Chits EP in a timely fashion at the highest level of quality.
*We will be sure to keep you all informed of our progress in regards to our proposed vinyl series. However, in the unlikely but unfortunately possible event that we may not be able to press any more records after the Chits EP, the 2nd and 3rd vinyl releases starting at the $250 reward levels will be replaced with a custom cassette mixtape recorded from Obey City's personal vinyl collection and a custom VHS mixtape recorded from Paul Jones' personal VHS collection, respectively.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
