Hello! Welcome to the campaign for Innovation Deluxe, our new enhanced version of Innovation. Lots of folks are here because they're already fans of the game, but we're happy to introduce it to newcomers as well.
Innovation is a civilization-building card game that focuses on the ideas and inventions across the ages. There are no maps or battles to fight, and your success is determined by clever use of the special powers granted by the innovations you choose to play. Each of the 105 cards has a unique effect, which can vary from drawing new cards from higher ages, to scoring points, to even demanding other civilizations surrender their innovations to you! Six years ago, Carl Chudyk and I were at a bachelor party for one of my good friends. As enterprising gamers do at such events, we played a prototype card game of his called History. It was awesome! Given the fiasco around Glory to Rome at that time, I offered my assistance as a fledgling publisher to get it to market in some form. Months later, after lots and lots of playtesting and development, Innovation was born!
Back then, we didn't have a big budget for art. My friend Cara Judd helped us out by quickly assembling icons for all the cards, and I personally handled some of the layout and graphic design. It worked just fine as functional and minimalist, but now in 2015 we have the ability to upgrade things, so here we are with Innovation Deluxe. Much of the look is inspired by the original, but with a nice new polish on top. Our illustrious Alanna Cervenak (who created all the lovely Mottainai art) headed up the redesign, and Cara lent her hand to redraw the character art on the card backs. I'm very happy with the results!
As you can see, we've kept the spirit of elegant simplicity that people have enjoyed about our Innovation. The new cards will be more vibrant on the table, and the pattern created by the latticework looks really neat on a table with lots of splayed piles. The new colorblind-friendly card color indicator is the shape of the box around the value. This is a more visible location when fanning your hand out, which should increase usability for many of you. Usability is a top priority, as Innovation is a game we hope you play hundreds of times!

Innovation: Third Edition is a new packaging of the base game of Innovation. We've dropped the retail price from $25 to $20, and we're giving backers an additional 20% off. The gameplay is unchanged except for small balance changes to a handful of cards.
Innovation: Deluxe is a complete set of Innovation and its four expansions, all in the new upgraded art style. The box will contain an insert designed to hold each of the five sets, either sleeved or unsleeved. Two of the expansions, Cities of Destiny and Artifacts of History, are brand new!
Cities of Destiny (known as 'No Place Like Home' in beta testing) features City cards with five icons instead of three. They also let you strengthen your dogma effects through the Sponsor ability. We'll be previewing Cities on a livestream October 8th.
Artifacts of History features unique artifacts from the ages, such as the Declaration of Independence. These cards feature very powerful dogma effects, but are difficult to wield. We'll be previewing Artifacts on a livestream October 5th. There will be an open beta test in January, leading up to production in the spring.
Note: We can only sell to customers in the US and Canada. Iello owns the rights to Innovation outside of these countries.
We have run many campaigns on Kickstarter, and we've decided to go as simple as we can. There are three options for backers:
Age 3 Backers
We're almost done with the redesigned base set, and we want to get it to you as quickly as possible! By backing at this tier, we'll have the base set in your hands by the end of the year. Get it here, get it first.
Age 7 Backers
Innovation Deluxe is a must have for any long term Innovation fans, those looking to discover the franchise for the first time, and everyone in between. By backing at this level, you'll receive Innovation Deluxe when it's complete (estimated in July 2016).

Age 10 Backers
You need Innovation, and you need it NOW! By backing at this tier, we'll send you the Base set when it's ready (December), which you can use to become a total pro as you wait for us to finish the rest of the expansions in Deluxe. When Deluxe is ready, we'll send it to you, and you can enjoy everything wonderful that Innovation has to offer.
If you back at this level, you will wind up with two copies of the base set of Innovation -- one in December, and one inside the Deluxe box in July.
By backing us on Kickstarter, you'll get 20% off MSRP and be the first to get the games. Supporting us in this way helps us gauge interest, and when campaigns go well, even produce more games! Side projects like One Deck Dungeon are able to exist with great art thanks to the success of our campaigns.
We only have the rights to sell Innovation in the US and Canada, so those're the only options for backers, sorry!

Monday, October 5, 4PM EST -- Artifacts of History Preview! We'll play a game of base Innovation + Artifacts, to show off the alpha version of Innovation's fourth expansion.
Thursday, October 8, 4PM EST -- Cities of Destiny Preview! We'll play a game of base Innovation + Cities, to show off the nearly finished third expansion.
We will schedule more livestreams as the campaign proceeds. Some livestreams may feature Sasha. Sasha is a cat, and will destroy the game we are playing.
Innovation Deluxe is by definition already deluxe! But I suppose if lots of you back our campaign, we could make it even more deluxe. The delux-est. All of these stretch goals apply to all copies of Deluxe -- you're making the game better for everyone!
(Reached!) 20K - Thicker Reference Cards. Typically we print Innovation reference cards on simple cardstock. We'll upgrade to a thicker, more indestructible* stock.
(Reached!) 30K - Bonus Art Postcard. Alanna will use Art Powers to pretty up a postcard so beautiful that you'll never send it in the mail, instead framing it on your wall.
(Reached!) 50K - Gold Embossed Box. Do you want your copy of Innovation Deluxe to be the fanciest box ever? We will do that. We have an entire swatchbook of embossing treatments, and we might just apply them all.
(Reached!) 80K - Alternate Art Special Achievements. We will create a full illustration for all of the Special Achievements (and cards like the Decrees from Figures in the Sand). These bonus illustrations will be printed on the backs of the cards, which normally are identical on both sides.
*-Do not add ketchup. It's not that indestructible.
Since we're printing up the base set of Innovation: Third Edition soon, the delivery date for the $16 level is much sooner. For the expansions (including the brand new Cities and Artifacts!) we still have lots of artwork and testing left to do. We're confident that we can hit the dates we've predicted. It's possible that we'll finish early. If we do, you'll get the games earlier than those projected dates.
Shipping is not included in the pledge levels, and will be added by Kickstarter after you select a level. A copy of Deluxe is $9 to ship in the US, $15 to Canada.
If you'd like to back for additional copies, add $16 or $48 to your pledge for each copy you'd like to add (for 3rd Ed or Deluxe respectively). US shipping on extra copies has no extra cost beyond the original shipping. If in Canada, add $2 per extra 3rd Edition and $5 per extra Deluxe for shipping.
Risks and challenges
We have successfully run 10 campaigns now, and we've gotten pretty good at shipping things on time (and even early sometimes!) As an added side-effect of the regional license, there's no wonky international shipping to trip us up this time, which should just make things that much smoother.
