[ Interview 3/6: Read my thoughts on Channel A, Kickstarter, and US Printing! ]
In this party game you occupy a prestigious seat on the board of Channel A, a network struggling to produce the next hit anime series. You know what premise the network wants, and it’s up to you to cobble together a title from anime buzzwords and pitch a series to win over the fans and your fellow boardmembers.
Will “Robo Arena Metal Battler” be a hit next season, will “Love Ninja Z” steal the hearts of audiences, or will the network be betting on “Fighting Fight Fighter EX?” Play to find out!
Channel A consists of 90 Premise cards and 210 Title cards from which you will make your excellent pitches. And as the power level in the Stretch Rewards section increases below, more Title cards will be added to the game!
All Kickstarter copies will include an exclusive set of three 1" buttons, depicting Robo Arena Metal Battler, Love Ninja Z, and Fighting Fight Fighter EX.
The entire game will be printed right here in the USA, which is great not only for supporting local business, but also for turnover time. It's just a few weeks from submitting files to shipping games. We are confident in being able to deliver the game by June.
Premise cards contain genres, like Fighting, Mecha, High School, Vampires. Two of them drawn from the deck combine to give a direction for the round's series pitches.
Title cards are various words that could compose a series title. Players each have a hand of ten cards, and they pick four to match the premise. So if the premise were Tennis Mecha, someone might choose "Legendary Steel Team Alpha", about a squad of elite robots that play tennis by day, while protecting the city from threats between matches!
Got a printer? Oodles of paper? Download and print the game out to give it a try. Fun is guaranteed, or your money back! The print and play version is on little square cards, instead of full-sized cards with shiny fonts.
Asmadi Games and Foam Brain Games are teaming up on this project for maximum amazingness. Foam Brain will be showing off the game at various anime and game conventions during the Kickstarter campaign:
TotalCon Feb 21-24 Mansfield, MA
Genericon March 2-4 Troy, NY
MomoCon Mar 8-10 Atlanta, GA
WPI Gaming Weekend March 15-17 Worcester, MA
PAX East March 22-24 Boston, MA
In addition to the fun rewards listed below, every stretch goal we reach will increase our power level, displayed in the scouter above. The result is ten additional title cards being added to the game!
$5000 - Halfway-there bonus roll! We will be rolling the big d20 at 6PM EDT TONIGHT (3/19) to kick off the power level. This will be livestreamed and followed by cake. [It was an 11! +11 Power]
$9000 - How is 9000 a stretch reward? That's not even fully funded! A better question is how could 9000 not be a stretch reward. When the total funding is...ahem...over 9000, we will roll a d20, and increase the power level by that number. [It was a 5! +5 Power]
$12,000 - Bonus Cat on the Internet video. I cannot describe its awesomeness in words, it would be impossible
$14,000 - Channel A Plus! Channel A Plus is an exclusive 20 card pack of Title cards that will not be available after release. This is on top of the ten card stretch goal bonus.
$16,000 - Button Bonanza! Button sets at the $25 level and above will come with 4 buttons instead of 3, depicting your choice of Love Ninja Z, Robo Arena Metal Battler or Fighting Fight Fighter EX.
$18,000 - We Didn't Playtest this Channel at All! Every game will come with a free mini-expansion to We Didn't Playtest This at All, with cards I design during a live webstream event with backers.
$22,222 - Top Secret: Every time a stretch goal is unlocked, a wild stretch goal will appear!
Asmadi Games has a full docket of games coming out this year, but every so often an awesome idea comes across our desk -- like Channel A! Your support in this campaign means this game will come out this spring, instead of next year. Precision awesome, delivered to your tabletop.
By using Kickstarter to help fund our games, we've been able to move almost all of Asmadi Games' production to the USA. It's a thing we feel pretty good about, and we thank you all for helping us do it!
Ewen Cluney (whose first name is pronounced like "Aaron" for reasons his parents have never fully explained) is probably best known as the translator of Maid: The Role-Playing Game, the first Japanese tabletop RPG ever released in English. He's also designed a number of unpublished role-playing games (see his blog, Yaruki Zero Games), and is gearing up to launch another translated Japanese RPG, Golden Sky Stories. He currently works as a professional translator and localization editor in the video game industry, and wastes lots of free times on analog games. Channel A is his first foray into professional card game design, but the game embodies all of the randomness, anime influence, and general silliness of his creative output.
You may notice that most of our reward levels are marked US only. Don't worry, we know some of you folks outside our country's borders want in on the fun too! The trouble is that the USPS international rates were raised significantly in January, and are no longer consistent across countries. If you are outside the US and want to back the project at a level beside $25, send an email to AsmadiGames@gmail.com and we'll take care of you (including rewards + exclusives). We'll collect payment when the game is released and we have a precise shipping weight. Apologies for the inconvenience!
For a single copy of the game, we've added specific levels for Canada and Elsewhere.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk to Channel A's completion is that someone combines the Mecha and Godzilla cards to destroy our factory. We have designed countermeasures to fight this possibility. *fingers crossed*
In all seriousness though, we're hoping this is a fairly simple project to bring from funding to your table. We've got a connection to a factory here in the USA, which we've used on games in the past. They've been plenty reliable (and we were able to deliver FlowerFall a month early!) The art assets for this game are already created -- they're pretty simple! The funding here is really just to fund the production. All of the pre-production work is done.
If trouble does arise, we'll do our best and use our experience to work through any issues. Asmadi Games has a pretty good reputation, and we work hard to maintain that :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
