To quote Hamilton:
AURORA & THE EAGLE #1 is a deeply personal project. Series creator Ashley Victoria Robinson has had this tucked away as a passion project for a long time. It was always intended to by an Original Graphic Novel. However, this year, as Ashley enters the final stages of becoming an American Citizen, she decided to write a comic about a Canadian Superhero experiencing a similar journey.
Ashley has brought a team together to give life to the first chapter of AURORA & THE EAGLE in the hopes that you would want to invest in Aurora’s story, her story, and their shared future. The funds raised by this Kickstarter campaign will go to cover the production costs of the issue and rewards.
Meet AURORA & THE EAGLE #1 a 20 page YA comic book issue encompassing the first chapter of what will be a larger graphic novel written by Canadian-immigrant-to-America, Ashley Victoria Robinson. You’ve probably seen Ashley on the internet, often speaking about her Canadian identity on shows like Collider Heroes, Movie Fights, Comic Boo NOW!, Geek History Lesson and Jawiin. This is her first solo-written comic book following 2015’s Apollo IX #1 for Top Cow Productions. Prior she has co-written two graphic novels with her writing partner (and husband), Jason Inman, including: 2018’s Jupiter Jet from Action Lab Entertainment and 2019’s Science! through Bedside Press (also owned by a Canadian!).
Both Jupiter Jet and Science! came to life through the power of Kickstarter and more than doubled their original goals.
She is joined by fellow Canadian Emmanuelle Chateauneuf (Queen Street, Saint Anthony’s School for Misplaced Children), former DC Comics letterer Carlos M. Mangual (Nightwing, Batman and Robin, Action Comics), and digital artist Sa Vu (a.k.a. Lightning Strikes).
(If you want to know more about Ashley’s previous comic work check out the Jupiter Jet IGN review!)
What if you were the biggest superhero swimming in your small pond, until you suddenly got dropped in the ocean of the world’s most elite heroes?
Aurora Borealis is Canada’s best superhero. She harnesses the powers of the Northern Lights to do everything from taking out maple syrup thieves dressed in hockey gear to preserving Natural Resources and her nation’s cultural identity from high-level political villains. Things are going swimmingly for her in the Great White North, until she is invited to become something more.
The Eagle (The United States’ best superhero), shows up in Canada one day to recruit Aurora to The Unity League - which is only the greatest superhero team in the known universe. Each nation is represented on The Unity League and, like Aurora, their unique power sets reflect their respective national identity. Since the death of Canada’s previous representative (Ed Fitzgerald, who possessed impressive water powers), there’s been a power vacuum. The Eagle was placed in charge of training Fitzgerald’s replacement. Who wouldn’t want to go train under a big, strong, scary, American stranger, right?
Aurora’s training is set to take place at The Eagle’s home in the United States, which marks not only a change of scenery, but the very first time Aurora has ever left her home country. Her mentor isn’t exactly the kindest, softest teacher and in a completely new locale Aurora is forced to define just what it means to her to be Canada’s best superhero.
Will Aurora come to a working balance with her identity, her powers, and her new partner? Probably. Is she worthy of replacing Ed Fitzergerald on The Unity League? Maybe. When she learns The Eagle is more fallible than he first appeared will they grow to a new understanding? You bet! It’s not until Aurora is forced away from everything she has drawn strength from that she will truly come into her own.
This Kickstarter is about a comic book telling the story of a bright-eyed Canadian girl moving to America and growing into the woman she was destined to be. Aurora is going to have to do some serious leveling up if she wants to make it out of the book alive!
Aurora’s story is an exploration of what it means to embrace dueling identities (girl and woman, civilian and superhero, Canadian and American), and the struggles that come along with such a monumental change of scenery at such a young age. Ashley was 20 when she first moved to the United States - she’s not 20 anymore.
Chateauneuf was a happy addition to AURORA & THE EAGLE who joined the project after a round of enthusiastic emails. She brings dynamic and whimsical art to the page rending the story in ways Robinson could never have imagined. Mangual is a friend of Robinson’s she has wanted to collaborate with for a long time who, fortunately, was able to step up to the plate and lend his expertise and precise workmanship when he was most needed.
Want to know something awesome? AURORA & THE EAGLE #1 is already COMPLETE! That’s right! The grey-scale art, the letters, the cover, and the formatting is 100% done. This means we are looking to fund rewards & shipping out to you. Since this book is 100% creator-owned, there’s no publisher financing. We, the creators, are responsible for all costs involved in making this first installment of AURORA & THE EAGLE. Due to the unique nature of this Kickstarter, Ashley will not be taking a wage, but everyone else who has collaborated with her will be paid for their hard work.
Our goal is to gauge audience interest in the full story of AURORA, THE EAGLE, ED FITZGERALD, and the rest of the international crew of THE UNITY LEAGUE. With this in mind, if you’ve enjoyed any of Ashley’s previous projects (Science!, Jupiter Jet, Terrific & Thief, Love is Love Anthology, Geek History Lesson, The Red Shirt Diaries), please support this unique step forward into creator-owned comic book creation.
AURORA & THE EAGLE #1 will only come to life with your support, we have some fantastic rewards for you, AND REMEMBER: you’re only charged if we make our funding goal. As of right now, there are no solid plans in place about where or when AURORA & THE EAGLE #1 will continue. This Kickstarter is the only way you get get this issue. Make sure to not miss out on Aurora’s first flight!
Money earned will go to covering fees, production, postage, printing of the collection. All Kickstarter funds are to support our artist, letterer, cover artist and more! Any leftover money will be used to continue making the AURORA & THE EAGLE Graphic Novel ...maybe some back-ups by other creators? A variant cover? All money will go back into the book, period.

Emmanuelle Chateauneuf is a passionate old soul who cares too much, is genuinely eccentric, and is on a whole, a general weirdo. With one foot planted firmly in her subconscious and the other kept sufficiently skimming the ground, the fresh-faced creator lives merrily alongside her mannequin/roommate, Kyoko, in their mystical flat of no name. Her work includes features in The Feathertale Review, Captain Canuck, her online comic strip series, ‘The Daily Comics’, and her first graphic novel, 'Queen Street'. Emmanuelle is currently imagineering her second graphic novel while working as a freelance comic creator and educator in the arts.
Carlos M. Mangual Originally born on the tropical island of Puerto Rico, Carlos M. Mangual has been a lover of all things comic-books, video games, and sci-fi for the last three decades. He’s been lettering comic-books for almost 10 years now. Eight of those years were spent at DC Comics as a member of their in-house lettering department where he honed his skills as a narrative production artist as well as the department’s supervisor.
As well as a being a comic book letterer, he’s also the creator of A Self Portrait Comic, a slice-of-life autobiographical romantic comedy, which he both wrote and illustrated.
Carlos now takes on freelances lettering and design gigs under Social Myth Studios. He currently resides in Glendale, CA.
Sa Vu (Lightning Strikes) is a freelance artist and designer in Sydney who works predominately in digital art. She holds a B. degree in Visual Communications from the University Technology, Sydney. She is recognised for her loose and expressive line art and sunset-inspired colour palettes.
Her work has appeared at a number of conventions, festivals, and advertisements with clients including SMASH con, Klasse14, Toranoana, and Fairfield City Council.
When Sa isn’t drawing, she’s amassing a collection of potted plants and binging Netflix cartoons.

Risks and challenges
All of the creators involved in this project are professionals with years of experience and excellent records in making tough deadlines. The best part? The entire issue is completed! All that remains is for the funds to clear and rewards to be sent out. Of course, unavoidable personal mishaps, acts of God, global disruption, or the death of National Superheroes could throw us off schedule, and we will keep Kickstarter backers updated if we do encounter any delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
