What is Breef.io?

The goal of Breef.io is to help streamline the requirements-gathering process of building a website. Simply put, it's a productivity tool for freelancers and web agencies who want to cut down time spent during the requirements-gathering phase of their web projects.

The Breef.io Journey
The Breef.io Journey

Who is behind Breef.io?

Breef.io was created by Ashley Mosuro, a Software Engineer based in London, UK. Ashley has experience working for a number of small, medium and large organisations, from start-ups, design agencies to world-renowned organisations such as Amazon, BBC, HSBC, Barclaycard and ITV.

Why is it needed?

During his time working for design agencies and running his own freelance business, Ashley began to realise how much time was spent simply trying to gather and understand client requirements.

Client requirements would typically come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, making it extremely time-consuming having to extract the key information needed to quote or begin the work. This would result in various back-and-forth emails, meetings and phone calls. If you're a small agency or a freelancer, time is your most precious commodity and these activities can eat away at that.

Breef.io will not only streamline and automate the requirements-gathering process, but it will also educate clients at the same time, whilst allowing freelancers and agencies to focus on the work itself.

What’s the plan?

The great news is that work has already begun and in full-flight with Breef.io. Not only do we have a clear plan, but we've already got a brand, a beta-stage web app and the necessary resources in place to begin further development! But there's still quite a bit to do in order to get this out to the world:

  • Review and improve the set of questions gathered from clients (you can be part of this vital decision making task!)
  • Ability to apply your own branding/colour scheme
  • Ability to filter your list of clients and briefs
  • Ability to share your brief using a short URL + copying to clipboard
  • Ability to receive email notification for Brief updates
  • Various UX improvements prior to production launch
  • Accessibility review and optimisations
  • Testing: browser compatibility and e2e testing
  • Platform Engineering support (preparing us for a production-ready environment!)

The above tasks are what we have defined as our MVP (minimal viable product) requirements that need to be completed in order for Breef.io to be ready for production use. This is our short-term list, which we intend to complete within the next 6 months, but we also have a ever-growing wishlist of features we intend implement long-term and we'd be more than happy to hear if you have any ideas you would like us to add!

Why are we here?

As listed above, we have a number of tasks that we believe are vital before Breef.io can be used as a production-ready product, and we need added engineering support to help us complete those tasks in a high quality and timely manner.

We're firm believers of staying small and concise. We don't want to grown unnecessarily - only when it's right for our end-users and the future development of our product.

Risks and challenges

Breef.io's main risk is failing to capture the correct information required to save the freelancer or web agency's time. That's why it is vital we engage with genuine end-users at the beta stage, working with you to identify all of the information that will help save you time and money.

The challenges we currently face are funding enough engineering support to provide an app that can be scaled for production use. This engineering support is primarily required for enhancing and maintaining Breef.io's API, adding new UI features and building a production-ready environment for launch.
