What is Everlock?
Everlock is a modular lock that is as much a part of your bike as your frame. It combines the strength and visual threat of a U-lock with multiple component security: locking your seat, post, frame, and wheel together with one key rotation. And you don't have to carry your lock around.
Finally, Everlock offers retroactive bike security using an integrated GPS chip with digital identification. The battery is designed to last three years and enclosure tested to meet strict tamper and element standards.
How does Everlock work?
Everlock works exactly like a normal U-lock. Simply insert the key into the key hole found on the Everlock seat post and remove the shackle of the U-lock. You can then lock your bike wheels, frame and seat with one single lock.
When we analyzed and tested all existing lock solutions in the market today, we were unable to find a lock that is strong and yet able to be carried around easily. Through our numerous user interviews, we also understood that being able to trace the location of the bike in the event of theft is extremely important.
We therefore design Everlock to meet those requirements. Everlock has the strength equivalent to that of a U-lock but as it is part of the bike, you will never have to carry it around. Furthermore, with its embedded GPS chip, you will be able to keep a close eye on your bike and trace it back in the unfortunate event of theft.
Design & Prototyping
We went through multiple iterations and user feedback sessions to finally arrive at one design that meets all of our requirements.
Beside convenience as a key factor, Everlock's dimensions were designed with modularity in mind. Do you have your own trusty U-lock that you want to use with Everlock? Prefer to use your own seat with Everlock? You can do both. Everlock's seat and U-lock adapters were designed to allow you to slip on your own lock or seat without compromising the lock's functionality.
While Everlock requires a minimum seat post height of 6 inches, if you prefer to ride with your seat post height lower, you can carry the shackle (U-part of the lock) with you. When you decide to lock your bike, simply undo the quick release and reattach the shackle to the seat post.
Everlock is built right in the heart of UC Berkeley by a group of bike enthusiasts who simply want to improve the commute experience of fellow bikers.
Everlock will work with any bike that has a standard diameter seat post of 27.2 mm. The minimum height of the seat is 96 mm, or 3.8 inches from the bike. Everlock's seat is tilted at an angle of 12° so that the seat sits flat when inserted into the bike. Everlock's seat can be shifted forward or backward by 5 mm.
For our first production run, we will be launching Everlock in 3 different colors - Shiny Silver, Matte Black and Hot Pink. We will also sell custom colored grips in the future for the seat post.
Risks and challenges
We understand that compatibility may be an issue for non-standard bike geometries. We are working to ensure that Everlock will satisfy the largest portion of the bicycle market and offer alternatives to bikes that are not compatible with the current version of Everlock.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
