About this project

Very briefly, Portrait is an open source, web-based tool to track and manage installed software packages and vital statistics on Linux computers.

What's that?

Maintaining up-to-date software packages on Linux desktops and servers can be difficult, especially when you have to log in to each one individually and update - and particularly if there are special circumstances. (Have packages you don't want to upgrade? Need to test configurations before rolling out to production? Then you probably know what I'm talking about.)

Portrait aims to solve that problem by providing a single web-based interface for you to manage packages on all the computers for which you're responsible. No more logging in individually.

Another common Linux administration task is to keep tabs on computers and catch problems before they occur. Portrait will integrate monitoring of some important statistics, and can warn you with configurable alerts when there are problems.

Because it is web-based, you'll be able to manage computers from anywhere in the world. Because it is open source, you'll be able to download a copy of Portrait and use it for free. In case you don't want to maintain your own copy, I'll run a hosted service you can use instead.

How does that work?

Portrait relies on a client on each computer you are managing. That client will report information to your Portrait server, which manages the information from all of your computers. When the clients contact the server, the server can send back instructions to update or install new packages. (Security conscious? Don't worry: there's no need to create firewall holes to connect to clients, and you can encrypt all communications with the server.)

The client software exists for Ubuntu computers (it can be expanded to Debian computers, and possibly others), and I've written several parts of the server already. I'm looking for support to let me work on Portrait over the summer and set up a hosted version. If this Kickstarter project gets funded, I'll be able to finish up Portrait and release it.

Open source, you say?

Of course! Once I have a stable version of Portrait, I'll release it as open source software. (I haven't decided on a license just yet, but the AGPL v3 is a strong contender.) If you've always wanted a system like Portrait, supporting this Kickstarter project is a way to help make it a reality.

I'll also establish a hosted version of Portrait. If you're not comfortable running your own copy of Portrait once it is released, you can use the hosted version instead.

What else do I need to know?

Well, I've been working on Portrait off and on for about a year now, so I have a good understanding of what remains to be done. Given that some fairly significant parts of Portrait are already done, if I'm able to dedicate time to Portrait over the summer, I'm confident I can get it finished up. Please note that Portrait is only for managing Linux computers, and at least initially will only support Ubuntu desktops and servers.

I'm allocating most of the project's goal amount to hardware and hosting costs to make sure that the hosted version of Portrait will run smoothly. The remaining amount is split between paying for the rewards to contributors and a small salary to allow me to dedicate the necessary time to Portrait.

Thinking about making a contribution? Great! There are a number of rewards to thank you for your support, all listed on the right side of the page. Have a question? Feel free to send me a message.

(Please note that I am not associated with Canonical, the good folks who make Ubuntu.)
