It all started sixteen years ago, when a childhood dream and an art gallery at the top of the hill gave birth to an idea: ask artists to create a rolling sculpture to “race” down a three-block-long steep hill in our beautiful waterfront district.
We started out slow: there were only eight entries and 300 spectators the first year. But over time, the event gained momentum, and today the Artists’ Soapbox Derby attracts thousands of people, introducing many visitors to Kingston and the Mid-Hudson Valley. Kids, families, community groups and individual artists spend their whole summer—or just a day--making their artistic creations. The prize money is an incentive, but we think many people race mostly for the fame and glory.
For years we pretty much rolled along without a care in the world--after all, gravity was our friend until the recession hit us hard here in the City of Kingston. But hard times is when we need this kind of upbeat event most. It’s a full day of art, music and family fun. We want to keep the derby rolling!
So what do we need the money for, you might ask?
Prizes, Insurance, Sound system, Music for the award ceremony. Plus other important stuff, such as: T-shirts, posters, soap bubbles, etc.
So what will you get for your pledge besides our utmost gratitude? Everyone will get a thank you and a mention in our Official Artists’ Soapbox Derby Newsletter. Plus posters, stickers, t-shirts, trophies and other fun stuff. Go to our website for more information: http://www.artistsoapboxderby.com
