The set has 30 cards: 12 heroes, 12 villains, 5 legends, and one attribute definition/checklist card.
The cards will come in a professionally printed matte wax packaging, randomly sorted, 5 to a pack. They will be printed in one of three Rarity Tiers: Common, Uncommon, and Rare! These aren't just a static set-- they're meant to be real trading cards, with all the "thrill of the hunt" included!
We are Cody Justus and Samara Pearlstein, two artists living and working in Boston MA. We met in grad school and soon developed a lively studio practice of schmoozing instead of doing whatever it was we were supposed to be doing. Long pointless discussions about art, artists, the art world, and superheroes (naturally) led to this concept.
In the beginning it was an entertaining side project, a nice break from our more individual studio practices, and, well... it was funny, at least to us. The more we fleshed (inked) out these characters, though, with character designs and specific powers and personal histories, the more other people told us they were interested in it too!
Art World Universe cards are for anyone who considers themselves in or adjacent to the art world... for anyone who loves art, and anyone who really would not describe their feelings for it as 'love'... for anyone who's into goofy superhero stuff.... or for anyone who's into trading cards!
We both have extensive trading card collections— Cody grew up with superhero cards from a certain large comic book company, and Sam has a thing about baseball cards. We both know and cherish the excitement that comes from tearing into a pack, not knowing what you're going to get.
Funding this Kickstarter will allow us to make this contemporary artist superhero trading card experience a reality. We want these to be printed properly, as real, high quality trading cards. We want them packaged professionally, randomized, printed in rarity tiers... all that good stuff!
The designing, writing, drawing, formatting, and (most of) the collaborative arguing is all done. The money we get from Kickstarter will go to:
--$6,000 to get the cards printed, collated, packaged, and shipped,
--$1,200 for reward fulfillment (printing, packaging, shipping),
--$800 for Kickstarter and credit card fees.
We have already contacted a printing service who can do this properly, and we have quotes based on printing 3,000 packs collated in rarity tiers. The amount of money we are aiming for here is based on the number of cards that makes the most economic sense to print in one batch, and will still allow us to get these things produced at the level of quality we (and you!) would expect from a professional trading card set.
The cards get made! Of course our first task will be to deliver our backers' rewards. Once we've done that, whatever packs are left over will be available for purchase in an online store. There is a possibility for these to be offered in brick-and-mortar locations in and around the Boston area, but those conversations won't really kick off unless and until this project is funded.
If this Kickstarter reaches $10,000, we will be able to make an initial print run of 5,000 packs. This means more cards out in the world, and increased opportunities to offer the cards in offline venues!
Risks and challenges
We want to be sure we can get cards printed and packaged at the level of quality we would expect from any professional trading card. We have already been in contact with a printing company that we know can handle the kind of printing, packaging, and rarity tier system that we will need to fully realize our concept. We've gotten quotes, we've handled samples, and we are confident about the responsiveness of these printers should any issues arise.
We both have experience packaging and shipping artwork, and Sam has experience making drawings on a much tighter timeline than we have allowed for reward fulfillment. We don't think the cards themselves or the rewards will present any challenges we can't handle!
That said, there is always a chance that something unforeseen occurs, and there is some delay in printing or shipping. We will communicate clearly and as promptly as possible should something like this happen, and we have no doubt that we will be able to address any problems in a reasonably timely fashion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
