New Finish Line!
We are so incredibly humbled to have hit our target with a week still remaining so we're setting a new challenge...
* Any additional money raised past our £775 will be used to buy tickets to Declaration to offer to mental health service users for free *
We have already put aside some free tickets for a mental health group we will be working with, but we want to be able to offer more! We are aiming to raise another £100 (taking our final total to £875) to provide an additional 10 free tickets for young mental health service users to see Declaration at The Lowry in June 2016.
Sarah is running 10k for Art with Heart's new production: Declaration
We’ve started making a new theatre production Declaration. Declaration is an exploration of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), mental health and wellbeing. Whilst making this I’ve been focusing on my own wellbeing, setting myself challenges and figuring out what I need to make sure I continue to feel ok, and like me! Part of this focus was taking up running.
On 28th Feb I’ll be taking on the enormous challenge of running a 10k at Manchester Winter 10k Run. I recently ran a 5k in a tough 45 mins, so completing a 10k is huge but I’m determined to show that THIS GIRL CAN! I’ve been blogging about my running (Run like a fat girl blog) and am really keen to get other women (and men) running too. If I can do it, I really do believe that anyone can.
This run will help support the making of Declaration. We have applied for funding to develop the work which will premiere at The Lowry in June, but we need to raise £775 of match funding to ensure the work can be made and reach as many community and support groups, and people as possible. We want to build a passionate, supportive, fabulous team of people through our crowdfunding campaign for Declaration. We’re not just after your money, we want YOU!
Running has given me an incredible sense of achievement, boosted my physical and mental health and all round wellbeing. For me, It’s really important that I am visible, talk openly about my own physical and mental health and I hope that by taking on this challenge it will allow others to talk about their own too, because from experience - the benefits WAY outweigh the fear. Tackling learning how to run has encouraged me to face my fears head on, be open about them and feel empowered to discuss them.
DECLARATION - What’s it all about?
Award-winning Art with Heart return to The Lowry Studio with Declaration; a raw, honest and hopeful exploration of ADHD, mental health and diagnosis. Instinctive, curious, bold and bouncy; Sarah is a mighty proud square peg, which wouldn’t be such a problem if the hole wasn’t so damn round.
Raw, honest and fully charged, Declaration explores when we want, need or are forced to declare our differences and the faces we wear to fit in.
Developed in consultation with medical professionals, ADHD and mental health support groups, Declaration examines when we want, need or are forced to declare our differences, and the faces we wear to fit in.
Declaration asks how gaining a medical diagnosis changes the way we’re viewed by society and ourselves, and questions when it empowers and discriminates. A 2011 study showed that those with ADHD were 47% more likely to have a substance use disorder. We ask: when you’re vulnerably close to the edge how do you find a space to safely lose control?
With storytelling, movement and conversations with audiences, Declaration doesn’t talk AT you, it invites you in, asking audiences to think, feel and take the steering wheel. Through Sarah’s comedic, bold, honest exchange, Declaration aims to challenge preconceptions and raise the profile of adult ADHD and mental health.
Show me the money (and what you’re doing with it!)
The money raised through this campaign will support the design and delivery of a programme of workshops for mental health support groups to coincide with Declaration. These workshops will involve young peoples and adult support groups and aim to offer a meaningful platform for participants to explore their voice and relationship with their own mental health and/or diagnosis.
How on earth are you going to run 10k?
Come rain, come shine I need to complete the 10k. I want to show that no matter how fat/unfit/unconfident you are, when you try your best you're winning. This isn’t about a personal best time, as long as I complete the 10k no matter how slow, whether running, walking, jogging or bouncy walking, as long as I have tried my best and make it over the finish line, I’ve finished it!
All the running based rewards are Greater Manchester based. If you live in a different area then it may not be possible to collect this reward. There might be the possibility (with no guarantee) of running one session in London, but I would need at least 8 people signed up and asking for this to make it possible. Please contact me asap before pledging if you would be interested in this and it’s a deal-breaker for you!
Sarah Humphreys Personal Training (£300): Sarah Humphreys has 10 years experience in the fitness industry. This session will take place outdoors at a mutually convenient location, within 5 miles of Manchester City Centre. At the end of the session you will have a better understanding of what sort of exercise programme fits you.
Risks and challenges
We will make Declaration through our partnership with The Lowry over the next 5 months, however without this funding through Kickstarter we will be limited to the number of community and support groups whom we can deliver our outreach workshop programme to.
Due to time restraints we will also be unable to build the sort of in depth, meaningful relationships we would hope with these groups, and our exchanges won’t have the same level of impact.
We’ll be using the FREE NHS Couch to 5k app for the rewards. There is the possibility that this might not be available by the time we issue all the rewards. If this does happen, or costs money we will not be using the app and following another similar free app. You also won’t need this app for your rewards.
I’m registered for the Winter Run but if I’m injured and can’t run the Winter Run I will still run a 10k, somehow, somewhere!
If I’m not given a medal at the end of the 10k run (£1000 reward), then I will have one made to give to you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
