Just In case you've missed them:
Update #3: STRETCH GOALS are here. (just click the update tag above to go to the update pages)
Pandamorphosis, my wordless picture book, is ready to leap into the world and I'd like you to come along for the adventure.
If you crossed Metamorphosis, a tale of involuntary transformation with, say, The Cat in the Hat, added a Through the Looking Glass-ish portal to a world that was populated with...um, ...pandas, you might discover a story like Pandamorphosis.
In order to publish this book, I need to have high quality, professional scans of the artwork so that the book reflects the fine details of the original drawings. The purpose of this project is to obtain the funding to complete the production work and publish the book.
See new rewards posted at the right to see combined pricing for posters.
(note: black printing on poster images above is just for title ID info and will not appear on the posters. some additional into will be added in teeny tiny print. Gotta take credit for it, you know.)
I have spent my whole life as a painter and printmaker, and in 2009 revived my interest in children's literature and illustration. I started writing and drawing panda cartoons in early 2008 and in 2009 launched the blog Your Brain on Pandas (aka The Panda Chronicles) to inflict... um...I mean share my panda dogma with the world.
I've always wanted to create a lavishly illustrated picture book, like the ones I fell in love with as a child. A vivd imagination is one of the most wonderful gifts that can be bestowed upon a child, and the books of my childhood took me to many imaginary places. These books helped me to become the artist I am today. They made me believe in the possibility of impossible dreams.
Pandamorphosis tells the story in pictures, without text. I love the wordless picture book form, as it allows for children to add their own thoughts and embellishments to the story, while still providing a tangible story line and discovery through the many visual clues.
Pandamorphosis is more than a book for children. If you love art, or pandas, or art about pandas, (um...need I go on?), you'll say, "Let loose the bears! Huzzah!" after reading Pandamorphosis.
Original Artwork? Wow! Because I believe that art is best served when it is shared with, loved, and appreciated by others, I am including original artwork that I created for this book, as part of my reward offerings. Every day that this campaign runs, I plan to release a new original drawing as a reward.
I know that not everyone can afford original art, so I plan to make several of my favorite images from the book into high quality posters, using fine art papers and archival printing. (see images of 4 medium size prints above) I also have just added smaller 8'x10" or 8"x12" high quality reproduction prints on Hahnemuhle rice paper (a beautiful fine art paper) of many of your favorite drawings from Pandamorphosis. (please see the images above, near the top of this page)
I visited my printer/ image scanning folks this week, and looked at paper samples. The papers for the 16"x12" and the 16"x20" "posters" is a beautiful heavyweight 100% rag watercolor paper. These are framable fine art reproduction quality and will be cherished additions to your home.
I will also be doing smaller art prints on Hahnemuhle rice paper, a beautiful fine art paper used for drawing and sumi painting. Stay tuned next week for these new rewards.

Kickstarter is for Everyone!
One of the things I love about Kickstarter is that even if you only have $1 or $5 to contribute to a project, it is a vote of confidence in the worthiness of a project. Everyone who contributes even $1 will be personally thanked by email and listed on The Panda Chronicles Roll of Honor page. You are the bears!
And speaking of bears, The Panda Chronicles gang wanted to come by and explain just how Kickstarter works.
I want to send out a special word of thanks to those who have supported my previous projects, as well as my non-Kickstarter art and writing pursuits. Big pandy hugs go out to the Panda Advisory Board for all your input on this project, and your support for Pandamorphosis!
Risks and challenges
While all the artwork is done, there is still layout for the the book, and scheduling to be done with the folks doing the scanning. I also have to schedule printing posters and framing the original artwork. Talks are now ongoing with a Seattle publisher, with whom I'm hoping to work. I am subject to the publishers schedule, should we agree to work together. But, even if talks with the publisher fall through, I am committed to making this book a reality. There are a number of printers in the area where I can get a high quality book printed and I will be researching these options.
I have already self-published 3 books of my cartoons, so I have familiarity and experience with putting a book out.
I will keep everyone updated on the status of various project parts are, both as the campaign moves along and after funding is complete.
I am asking for the bare minimum needed to do the necessary production work and fulfill rewards. If there is an overwhelming response to this project, there are some other associated projects that will be able to happen.
There is always the possibility that pandas may leap out of my computer and make me go play with them, thus deadlines may get pushed back. You never know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
