The purpose of this Kickstarter project is to allow me to participate in a workshop in Cortona, Italy in June of 2012. As a working artist for more than 35 years, I am very excited about this opportunity to both expand my skills, as well as create new work.
There is no better way to gather experiences and inspiration for my art than in person. This trip to Italy, will be lead by a master of of egg tempera painting. Italy has a history and tradition of egg tempera going back centuries, so this is an opportunity for me to study this medium, both from renaissance masterpieces, as well as from a contemporary master.
The second focus of my trip is to produce a series of black and white lithographs from plates that I will produce on site. Plein air printmaking, in other words. The drawings and sketches that one makes spontaneously often have a freshness and authenticity that gets lost when you return to your studio. The polymer plate litho process makes it completely portable, as the actual plate is very thin and light. This will allow me to create the actual printing plates while in Italy and then print them in my studio when I return home. These hand-pulled prints make up the bulk of rewards to my supporters, as well as work for a show that I organize in the summer.
This new work builds on the paintings, monoprints, and etchings that I have created previously.
I am very grateful to Kickstarter and all my supporters for the opportunity to gather inspiration and create new work.
