About

NB: in sympathy with arachnophobes, the final cover of book 4 will not feature a spider.

Due to a miscommunication between the production and marketing departments at Doubtist Books, Alexander Velky (the only poet currently on our roster) has written TWO new poetry books instead of one.

If you've even the most basic knowledge of publishing models and small presses you'll realize this means we are facing logistical logjams, administrative nightmares, and the very real possibility of bankruptcy and oblivion.

To explain more about why he's done this, here's a full-length version of the above interview conducted between our CEO, Alexander Velky, and the aforementioned poet, who is also, inconveniently, Alexander Velky:

Having failed to convince him to abandon plans for publishing one of these volumes (or, ideally, both), Doubtist Books are now in the difficult position of having to raise funds for not one but TWO new poetry volumes - flying in the face of both common sense and public demand. The costs for each are basically £200 for design and typesetting, with an approximate £500 cost for printing, plus Kickstarter fees in the unlikely event that we run a successful campaign.

About Doubtist Books
Doubtist Books exists quite happily outside the context of the contemporary poetry industry, and isn't generally invited in due to self-publishing being frowned upon. Ironically, many respected small presses whose physical products are inferior to ours are now beginning to offer "hybrid publishing" (i.e. vanity publishing, rebranded) to poets they'd otherwise not be interested in, motivated purely by humongous hypocrisy and greed. Conversely, our model has so far relied entirely on crowdfunding from customers, because we are skint. Rest assured though, our editorial skill and our aesthetic taste are both impeccable. And the books we produce (ask anyone who's bought one before) look and feel great. Unlike many cheapo "printouts" they are beautifully designed objects that present the poems in the best possible light.

About Alexander Velky
Alexander Velky has published two volumes with Doubtist Books (selling about 100 copies each so far) and has had poems shortlisted in major international competitions judged by Matthew Sweeney, Glynn Maxwell, and Lorraine Mariner. However, Velky remains very much at the fringes of the contemporary poetry scene due to his fierce ideological stance against subsidized arts-funding enterprises, his stoical insistence on capitalizing each new line in his poems, and his general laziness with regard to getting his poems "out there". His work, however, is consistently good, and speaks for itself:

Please share this page! Even if you have no intention of buying a book yourself. Our marketing budget is zero, and getting the link out there on Facebook, Twitter, your blog, or wherever else you spend your time will be invaluable to the (frankly rather unlikely) success of this project. Consider buying a book or two (or four) as a gift, or lend a copy of an old book you already have to someone you think might not hate it.

I'd like to promise a launch event (maybe one in London and one closer to home in West Wales?) but since the odds are quite unfavourable this time around, we'll just see how it goes...

All glory to the Republic.

A. Velky, 2018

Risks and challenges

The usual timescales of editing, design, typesetting, and print runs, for which allowances have been made.

Beyond these, this is the first time we've attempted to publish two books simultaneously, and will (regardless of the result of this funding drive) probably be the last. That said, our two previous successful Kickstarter campaigns bear testimony to both the viability of this process for small publishers, and to our own ability to fulfil the promises made to our generous funders.

    REMOTE GIG DEAL

One paperback copy of BOTH "In the Men's Room" and "The misery tune", signed, numbered, and delivered – in a black jiffy bag adorned with a custom-made wax seal – to an address of your choice.

AND you can choose ANY Has Doubts poem (of the 132 spread across 4 volumes that will exist IF these books are successfully funded) to be included on the set-list of a REMOTE GIG I will record LIVE (probably in Landskeria), and upload to YouTube. The poem will be dedicated to you, with thanks, in the preamble of the reading, and if it's a relatively short one I might even learn it to perform without a book. The end result (if enough people choose this reward) will be a full Alexander Velky gig (only the second ever to occur) captured on film; the *nature* of AV steered into a communally chosen *destiny* (see what I did there). If hardly anyone chooses this you might get to choose more than one poem/dedication, but you will get AT LEAST one, and I promise to make the recording as professional as I can. (sellotaping lamps to the ceiling of the mill and everything). I will also (if there is enough demand/logistic possibility) get a live audience to witness the gig - you could even witness it yourself maybe; although I live so far away from most people that the very unlikelihood of this being feasible is WHY I have come up with the idea of a REMOTE GIG. The "delivery" for this reward indicates the books. The gig might take longer to organise, or not. But I WILL endeavour to have it done and uploaded by the end of 2018.

Please include your POSTAL ADDRESS for the books. You may indicate your poem choice now, or (probably better) wait till you've seen the new books, where a lot of poems you will find are better than the old ones.

    MEMENTO MORI DEAL

One paperback copy of BOTH "In the Men's Room" and "The misery tune", signed, numbered, and delivered – in a black jiffy bag adorned with a custom-made wax seal – to an address of your choice.

AND ONE (of NINE) "Memento mori" paintings I plan to do to celebrate the publishing of The Misery Tune. Each painting will be composed of a light/dark, faded, colourful background, and a contrasting foreground haunted by a grisly image of mortality which I will produce by painting my entire face and forehead, then imprinting it on the canvas while contorting my expression into one of existential dread. For a vague idea of what it'll look like, see the painting on the beam in the mill behind the camera-child at the end of the interview video on this page. It will be like that, but better, and smaller (just big enough for a face, probably square). The painting will serve as a memento mori, simultaneously reminding you of your mortality and encouraging you to make the most of your earthly existence.

So, yeah, please include your POSTAL ADDRESS.
