About

PROJECT UPDATE:

This is one of the reasons why we're so excited about this project.  Just look at Kevin's HUMOR and FEARLESSNESS with these lions!

What a relationship of mutual love!    Lion Sandwich Anyone?

Welcome to Art of the Pride! What a thrill and honor it is to share this project with you and everyone worldwide!

The momentum and planning for this project has been in the works for over a year, and now with a clear mission, the right team in place, the support of the art community and Kevin Richardson's Wildlife Sanctuary, it’s time to bring this project to life!

And of course we could NOT do this without your support!

Please donate now and we'll take you on a wild journey with a full multimedia experience that includes "behind the scenes"  from South Africa, to Suzanne's art studio in New York and exhibitions in NYC, and hopefully Los Angeles, and London.

WE'VE CREATED A FUN & UNIQUE JOURNEY -- COME WITH US!

The “In-A-Nutshell” Version:

An unconventional collaboration between painter Suzanne Unrein and Lion Whisperer Kevin Richardson, in which Suzanne will travel to South Africa where she will document and paint the relationship between Kevin and his animals.  The paintings will be traveling around the world in exhibitions to not only promote the project but bring awareness to the plight of the King of Beasts.

Our Mission

To bring together a New York City Painter and an African Lion Whisperer in a community-based project showing how art can make a difference-- across borders, cultures and various forms of creative expression, helping us all to understand the unique bonds of man, beast and art.

I'm amazed, what's next?

Do you have time for the “full, detailed” version?

Great we love you for that! Grab your favorite beverage, scroll down and go wild.

Notable Art People Talk about Suzanne's Work:

Slip Into Suzanne’s Paintings:

It just might blow your mind!  Or take you on an expedition to another world that may vibrantly enliven a new perspective, idea, feeling.  She describes her process as relating to “the energy of my subjects and wanting to capture the mystery of both the paint and the animals.  There’s a muscularity to the forms and composition but a real messiness to the paint.”  Enjoy Suzanne's work below and snippets on how writer Hampton Fancher experiences the poetry in it.

As a self-taught animal behaviorist, Kevin has disregarded every rule known to humans when working with wild animals. Flouting common misconceptions that breaking an animal’s spirit with sticks and chains is the best way to subdue them, he uses love, understanding and trust to develop personal bonds with them.

His unique method of getting to know their individual personalities, what makes each of them angry, happy, upset, or irritated--just like a mother understands a child-- has caused the lions to accept him like one of their own into their pride.

He uses his unique relationship with these large predators to bring awareness about the alarming numbers of them disappearing from the planet, headed towards extinction.

He is involved in various documentaries by award winning filmmakers, and has been the host of popular television shows such as The Lion Ranger for National Geographic Wild.  His acclaimed book is called “Part of the Pride:  My Life Among the Big Cats of Africa”.

In addition, he stars in an international film called “African Safari 3D” being released in October 2013.

He houses his lions on a reserve outside of Pretoria, South Africa called Kevin Richardson's Wildlife Sanctuary.

Well hello?! Good day for a swim, I see.
Well hello?! Good day for a swim, I see.

Your contributions to the project will pay for the travel to and from South Africa for the collaboration between Suzanne Unrein, Kevin Richardson and the animals on the reserve. It will pay for all the art supplies that will be used over the course of six months to create the large format paintings and smaller oil-on-paper pieces. The handmade oil colors and mediums that produce the amazingly vibrant colors in the paintings are all archival and add to the richness of the work.  The money will also go to ensure the media and documentary team will follow the project throughout and will keep you informed via the website, blogs, twitter, facebook and more.  We will rent multiple exhibition spaces for the show of the paintings and create all of the rewards as promised in the campaign.

We’ve thoughtfully curated an outstanding collection of rewards that we think you’ll be super excited about.

We have a dynamically diverse crowd here, from the global art community, wildlife & animal lovers, Kevin Richardson & Suzanne Unrein fans, to those that want to support local craft artisan in South Africa.

But don't fret, we've got you all covered!

Check out the lion’s rewards below and please give what you can.   We have more details about the rewards and the designers on our blog.

Although this wasn’t planned, it surely was a serendipitous coincidence that most lions form prides that typically include 5 females and 2 males, and so it goes with the Art of the Pride Team!

This team was established with highly enthusiastic experts in multidiscipline fields that are committed to ensure this project happens in the most impactful way.

The momentum and planning for this project has been in the works for over a year, and now with a clear mission, the right team in place, and the support of the art community, it’s time to bring this project to life. We’ve developed a project that not only is about Kevin & Suzanne but we want to bring you along this journey, to experience for yourself the different facets of this project and how you might relate.

Art of the Pride Project seeks to:

1. Explore the artist, viewers and social change sides of art.

  • Follow the artist on this journey and share your own.

2. Bring awareness to the shocking decrease in worldwide lion populations.

  •  If no action is taken, lions in Africa will likely go extinct in 20 years. This project is aimed at inspiring action.

3. Actively engage cross-cultural communities worldwide.

  • The global art community, fans of Kevin Richardson, Kickstarter project supporters, wildlife enthusiasts, and local South African craft artisans will come together through an engaging multi-media experience.

4. Encourage an understanding of large cats.

  • Kevin breaks boundaries between man and the King of Beasts. His interactions with his lions are guided by extensive knowledge, strong intuition, and deep respect. Each of these aspects will be explored in the final pieces of art created by Suzanne, as well as in the content surrounding the project that will be shared with the project's supporters via social media.

5. Support existing efforts to preserve African lion populations

  • Suzanne will spend 6+ months painting this series. This project will explore the unique bonds of man, beast and art.
