About

Photographic lens designs have come quite far in the last 175 years, yet many lens designs made in the late 1800s are still used today. Each lens design has a timeless story and history.

When we think about lenses, we think Leica. It's a company at the pinnacle of lens design. They solve important problems and in the process create objects that are both engineering marvels and works of art.

This poster grew from our investigation into the history of modern lenses and the development of the M lens system, arguably the gold standard of lens systems.

We tried screen printing our own posters (the ones you see in the video and the images), but our prototypes don't meet our standards. We would like to to do a run of professionally offset printed posters and share them with the rest of the world.

THE POSTER

Art of the Lens is a 18" by 24" poster printed on smooth finish black cover stock. It features all 23 Leica M Lenses available today.

All lenses are rendered in full scale, allowing you to compare them to your current collection or imagine the size of a lens before purchasing it.

We chose the FF DIN typeface because of its lean, geometric lines and German heritage.

The poster will be offset printed in the USA using Pantone spot colors and high gloss UV varnish. The lens elements (glass) will be printed in grey while the lens bodies will be printed in high gloss UV varnish (far more glossy than the prototypes seen in our photos).

SPECIFICATIONS

  • 18 inches x 24 inches black heavy cover stock
  • 1:1 scale

SHIPPING

We plan to ship these so that they arrive before Christmas in the USA. International orders could take longer depending on your location.

STORY

This journey started 4 months ago when we started reading about the history of lens design. We were fascinated by the way lenses have slowly evolved and how many lens designs borrow from each other. As we started looking at diagrams, we had the realization that we would love to see them in 1:1 scale on a poster.

We set to work over the following months designing and prototyping the poster, sourcing paper, and working with printers.

Risks and challenges

Design: The design of the poster is already 100% complete and we have created our own full-scale screen printed prototypes to get a feel for the colors / gloss treatment.

Paper: We have also already talked to paper suppliers in the area and picked out a lovely Epic Black cover sheet that we will source.

Printing: We have been working closely with a local offset printer to ensure that the poster will come out the way we want it to. They are ready to print the poster once the Kickstarter is completed. We have built in a large buffer into our schedule so that if they experience delays, we can still ship on time.

Shipping: We will be working with a fulfillment company to make sure that all shipments make it in a timely manner.
