CHRISTOPHER R. WEINGARTEN is a Brooklyn-based freelance music journalist whose work regularly appears in the Village Voice, RollingStone.com, Revolver and much more. In 2009 he vowed to review 1,000 new releases over Twitter. His acerbic, foul-mouthed speech at the 140 Characters Conference on the death of music criticism became a viral video smash, and brought enough attention to his project that it was covered in the New York Times, The Onion, Nashville Scene, Eye Weekly, Flavorpill and pretty much everywhere but Wired.
At the end of 2009 Weingarten set out to collaborate on a book version of the Twitter reviews with us here at Article, a music, zine, T-shirt and art group also out of Brooklyn. The resulting book is not really a book at all. It is a physical representation of Twitter. Twitter in the raw. Each of Weingarten's 1,000 tweet reviews from 2009 will be individually typed out on to a single index card and the mass of them will be held together in a wonderful natural oak index card catalog.
Because of the monstrous amount of time it takes to type up everything we are looking to hire a typist, someone who can knock out "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" on a typewriter faster than your little sister can update her Facebook status. We'll probably get our typewriters out and spend some quality time with them, too, but we're not professionals. As well, a nice wooden card catalog and a branding iron don't come cheap these days. We're trying to raise money here because it will allow us to offer a product that we are proud of at a price we'd be able to purchase it at.
The boxes will be a limited edition set and numbered as such, though we are not sure what the edition will be right now. I assure you that each box will be very special.
To review, each box includes:
--1,000 hand-typed 3 x 5 index cards, each featuring one 140-character record review, as well as some extra goodies thrown in there.
--A handsome, 12" deep wooden box of the finest oak, branded with the @1000TimesYes logo, comfortably fitting all 1,000 tweets, as well as some extras, in the vintage style of your favorite library card catalog.
--Approximately 1.6 ounces of "indie cred"
--Boxes can be arranged in the order of your pleasing. Do you want them chronologically? Done. Alphabetically by band name? Done. Autobiographically? Done. Well, maybe.
