Hi, my name is Ciléin. I’m a doctor and medical illustrator, creating under the name 'artibiotics'. I've come to Kickstarter to raise support to develop an illustrated video and poster summary of the H's & T's (AKA reversible causes of cardiac arrest), to help medical trainees and professionals save lives. You can support the project by getting rewards e.g. a poster of the H's & T's, or custom original medical illustration. The video will be freely released online when completed. You can check out my illustrated article on artibiotics to see more of the art involved, or learn about the H's & T's.
Cardiac arrest is the medical term for when the heart stops beating, and one of the most terrifying situations a doctor can face. Your organs quickly fail, and death is the ultimate result.
In advanced life saving, there is a series of core concepts called the H’s & T’s. Thesesummarise the reversible causes of cardiac arrest, and direct medics to the investigations and management that can save someone’s life. Every second matters when trying to re-start the heart; time is brain, as they say. Seconds can be the difference between a patient's life or death, with a spectrum of disability in between.
In the panic of an arrest situation it can be hard to bring the H's & T's to mind, especially as most are concepts that are not readily visualised or memorised, such as 'Hydrogen ions'.
Here's where I come in. My passion as a medical illustrator is to break down complex information by visualising it in a way that makes sense at a glance. I've developed a series of illustrations explaining the H's & T's and designed a poster summary of them.
I'm asking for your support to create a top quality litho print run of these large posters, to get them into hospital wards, junior doctors' offices, and other clinical areas, where this information can be absorbed into second nature by the teams that need it. The funds will also allow the development of a short illustrated video on the subject, to share this information online in a digestible format. This will be aimed at paramedics, doctors, nurses, and students who need it to save lives.
The H's & T's poster
Final poster design is subject to small tweaks polishing the art through the campaign. A2 16.5 x 23.4" full-colour matte H's & T's poster. These will be litho printed for top quality colour reproduction and sustainability in the printing process.
The H's & T's video
This will be a short video overview of the topic, illustrated and narrated by myself to explain the H's and T's, touching on actions needed to investigate and manage each. I'll be working with an emergency medicine consultant to ensure the most relevant content is covered well. The video will be posted on YouTube and the artibiotics blog for free, in HD.
Once the campaign is successful I will ask for the addresses to post rewards to, and subject to illustrate if you get a custom medical illustration commission. There are various levels of reward for your support, including:
£3+ Sincere thanks: Coffee-sized support for those who want to help bring the project into the world, but don't want a physical reward. Thank you for your generosity!
£5+ eSupport: Get a digital PDF copy of the poster for handy reference on your phone, or to print at A4 size on regular papers. A good option for students who want to support the project!
UPGRADED: in addition to English, this reward will now include a French and Spanish translated PDF version of the poster.
£15+ H's & T's poster: 16.5"x23.4" full colour matte laminate H's & T's poster. A winner for any doctor's office or student's bedroom. Why not gift to a medic you know?
£20+ Buy one, gift one: Buy one poster, get a second to gift (or use as you wish)! Comes with two A2 16.5"x23.4" full colour matte laminate H's & T's posters. A winner for any doctor's office or student's bedroom.
£60+ Donate a box of posters to a hospital: Support a hospital by kindly donating a box of 10x A2 H's & T's posters. These will be for use in the Junior Doctors' rooms on Wards, acute medical teams, emergency departments, and cardiac arrest team offices, e.g. Hospital at Night. I can send the box to you, or donate one on your behalf to a UK NHS hospital. If the latter, I'll let you know which you've supported!

Risks and challenges
I have already completed the required artwork, costed the project to include rewards and fulfilment, and set aside time for completion of the commissioned medical illustrations.
This is my first Kickstarter, and so while I've done my best to research and prepare, I anticipate some headaches along the way and have allowed extra time to manage these.
I have years of experience working successfully to deadlines through freelance illustration, in the video games industry, and of course in medicine where thriving under pressure is the required default setting.
All that remains is the logistics of printing the posters and editing the art into a lovely video overview of the H's & T's. I hope to start shipping posters in May 2018, and commissioned illustrations in June-July 2018.
Please note: once the campaign is successful, payments will process within 2 weeks. I will then ask for the address to post rewards to, hospital to donate to, and custom options of subject matter for medical illustration commissions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
