Our conceptual ideas about Artera were initially developed via computer-aided design (CAD) modelling, which enabled us to refine the device appearance and to model internal structure, arrange all necessary components correctly and verify interfaces thoroughly. Although the current 3D model of the gadget may look impressive enough as a concept, and bearing in mind the fact that our prototype is actually based on it, we still constantly work in CAD to improve Artera's design in order to make it more manufacture-friendly and (consequently) cheaper.
Can Artera really draw any colour? How? A well-known system of primary colours (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow), which is used (e.g.) in printers, can produce any colour. Artera works on the same principle. There are three cartridges for the main colours - Cyan, Magenta and Yellow - and two additional cartridges: Black for darker colours and White for lighter ones.
In Artera, one way to get a colour you want is to choose it from an app on your smartphone. Via Bluetooth, a colour code goes to a system board inside the device. Tiny mechanical components are electronically directed to supply CMYBW, in required proportions, from the cartridges to a chamber where they're blended together. Fast and simple.
Preliminary estimates show that a set of all five cartridges should cost not more than $2. For all of our backers, however, the price will not exceed $1.
With Artera, the functions that other drawing tools provide separately, you get all in one. The advantages are obvious - it is compact, convenient to use, and best value for money.
A range of tips (pen and marker) for Artera provides great possibilities for your creative ambitions - draw bright sketches, make striking notes, do calligraphy, make documents in a way that will grab the reader's attention.
You can scan a colour by a sensor at the top of the pen. When scanning is finished a special indicator on the gadget or in the app on your smartphone will show the scanned colour.
Install Artera application on your smartphone and use it to choose a colour you like from a palette where the number of colours is really unlimited. In the app, you can manually type in a colour's digital code, save your favourite colours in a library, or share them with your friends.
The Beta version of our Android application for Artera has been finished. First of all, we improved a colour selection interface. When the colour is chosen you can see its CMYK code in the lower part of the screen. And vice versa, if you type in a code manually you'll see it on the screen. Secondly, save your favourite colours in a library. It's a very convenient feature when you need to get back to the same colours a few times.
When you fill in the fields with a CMYK code the app converts it into RGB, which enables the screen of your smartphone to show you the closest possible colour to the initial one. Nevertheless, the device will still make the colour based on the CMYK code you entered.
Due to a well-known problem regarding differences in representation of the same colour on a screen and on paper, we have been calibrating our mobile app to achieve the most accurate results. Besides, for professional reasons, since the CMYK code of a desired colour is often known, our app provides a customer with the option of typing it in manually. In this case, despite the fact that the colour on the screen is shown in RGB, the pen produces the colour based on the latter's CMYK definition. During further development of the prototype we aim to improve scanner perception of colours, revise the programming code and refine the chemical compounds for the Black and White inks. Regarding manufacturing requirements for the pre-production sample, designs of both internal and external structures may also be updated.
Having successfully finished a working prototype within a year, we are currently looking into opportunities to begin out pilot production. Simultaneously, we'll keep working on making Artera more manufacture-friendly, smarter and cheaper as beta testing of the gadget has been continually progressing. With these goals achieved, our Kickstarter deliveries are expected by the end of 2020. We sincerely appreciate your support and your interest in Artera. Risks and challenges
Artera is a complex gadget consisting of mechanical, electronic and hydraulic parts. The high quality of the materials used in Artera and the overall reliability of the device are among our highest priorities. This, however, partly depends on the third parties involved in the product manufacture.
Although our risk-assessment analysis showed that there would be little chance of unforeseen shortages of the necessary materials and components for Artera on the market, there may still be some issues regarding the manufacturing setup process.
Another potential risk that may result in the delayed delivery of the product to our customers concerns logistics. Please bear in mind that some countries may have specific import requirements (i.e. restrictions), which we'll have to face and quickly learn how to sort out.
No matter what challenges our project may undergo we will stay focused on the price-quality balance and the scheduled timeline, to meet your expectations and the delivery commitments to our customers.
