Richard Michaux has begun sculpting President Obama and Governor Romney. He needs your help to finish the job. No politics, just art!

Thanks for taking the time to view "Sculpting a President"

We're coming up on Election Day, and by now you're probably as tired of all the posturing and political ads as I am.  That's why this is not a project about politics. It's about art.

Typically, presidential statues only exist in museums and on Mount Rushmore. This election year, I'd like to change that by offering sculptures of President Obama and presidential hopeful Governor Romney to anyone who wants one, not just historians and art curators.

These sculptures are life-sized and will be cast so they will last for generations. Because they are finished by hand, each one becomes a one-of-a-kind piece of art. They'll help you display your patriotism indoors or outside and are lightweight, durable and weatherproof.

Whether you pick Barack or choose Mitt, it's up to you. But if you support this project, you'll own a piece of history.

I will make as many sculptures as are pledged for in the by October 10th, be it one or a thousand, and I'll make sure it's delivered to you by Election Day.

Here's a look at my creative process:

Creating the Mold

When I'm satisfied that I've captured all of the details of the facial expression, I construct a wooden housing around the piece and prepare it for a plaster mold. The video below gives a brief glimpse into how this is done (note: these videos are from a recent project - I have not yet made a plaster or a rubber mold of the presidential sculptures. Those are a part of this campaign!)

After the plaster has dried, I remove and rework the clay. Then I repeat the whole process once more with a synthetic, platinum-based silicone rubber mold that will allow me to cast multiple versions of the same face.  (The video below is not of the presidential sculptures, but just an illustration of the process.)

Casting the Sculpture

Up to this point, it's all been prep work. Only once I mix the resin and pour it into the rubber mold does a chemical reaction occur and the sculpture begin to materialize. I use synthetic resin because it is weatherproof, lightweight, stronger than concrete, and can be painted easily.

Applying the Patina

Almost done! After the resin has been given time to cure, I remove it from the rubber mold and apply a patina, which is several layers of primer and paint that give the piece a protective finish as well as a rich color.

Funding

Your backing for this project will help to offset the raw material and production costs for making these portrait sculptures, including:

  • clay (the material I use to sculpt)
  • plaster (for making the a mold that allows me to replicate the sculpture)
  • platinum-based silicone rubber (for making the reusable rubber mold that houses the synthetic resin)
  • synthetic resin (this is what your statue is made from)
  • paint and primer (the finishing touch)

Note: absolutely no political contributions will be made with any proceeds from this project.

My goal is to have these sculptures cast, painted, and delivered by
November 6th (Election Day) at the latest. I've been sculpting for
over 40 years and have developed a very reliable and efficient system
for casting pieces; however, if there is an extremely positive
response to this campaign, I will likely need to hire additional help
to complete orders, which could add some time to the process. That
being said, I will exhaust every resource I have and contact every
qualified person I know to make sure that delays do not happen. In
any case, I promise to be very forthright and honest about my
expectations as the campaign progresses. And if there's ever a doubt
on your end, I welcome you to reach out to me to let me know. I'm
just an email away.
