About this project
"Grand Canyon Gravure" is a project that has grown into something more incredible than I thought it could ever be. It is the convergence of two different adventures that started 10 months apart: learning photogravure and a 16 day winter trip through the Grand Canyon.
The goal of this Kickstarter venture is to get the raw material needed to finish the second half of this photographic/historical project called "Grand Canyon Gravure".
In the 18 months since emerging from the Grand Canyon, 12 gravure plates have been made. Each plate has been used to make an edition of 10 prints with sepia ink. Some have been used to make an edition of 10 prints with a special mixture that I call "Thalo Black". 12 (or more) additional gravure plates are planned. With each of the 24 total (or more) plates, I plan to make editions of 10 prints for four different ink colors: sepia, thalo black, dark brown, blue black; making a total of 40 prints per plate (not including the traditional printer's proof and artist's proof).
The specific goal set here on Kickstarter is the minimum amount required to get the raw material to finish this Grand Canyon Gravure project, provide conservation storage for the finished project, and get it ready for gallery/museum showing.
The first photogravures have already received some acclaim.
"Havasu" won 1st Place Alternative Photographic Process and People's Choice in a Rangefinder Magazine competition. The image was published (full page) in the March 2012 issue. "Havasu" will be included in Soho Photo's annual competition which opens on July 5th of this year. It was also included in shows at Photoworks Gallery in Glen Echo Park as well as a January show at The Kiernan Gallery.
"Campsite Quanta" was included in a show at Open Shutter Gallery and won Best in Show at ARTSPACE during a show called "Altered State?". The thalo black version was in a show at MPLS Photo Center over this past winter.
When the 24 plates have been etched and editioned I plan to finish a proposal for showing them at Kolb Studio on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where they can provide a modern link to the long tradition of photographic exploration in the American southwest. 24 plates might not be quite as ambitious a project as Edward S. Curtis' The North American Indian, but the choice of photogravure (as the longest-lasting, most archivally stable photo process) is the same.
A book component to this project is planned, but that depends on time and money. The first step is finishing the prints and securing more gallery spaces for showing. Anything above the goal set here will go towards framing and gallery costs as well as (and most preferred) towards the book.
For the sake of full disclosure, here is a list of the raw the materials that this project will get:
200 sheets Rives BFK off white printmaking paper
200 sheets Rives BFK white printmaking paper
20 photogravure plates (some extra plates just in case...)
2 lbs. Graphic Chemical Sepia etching ink
2 lbs Graphic Chemical Bone Black etching ink
1 lb Graphic Chemical Thalo Red etching ink
2 lbs Graphic Chemical Dark Brown etching ink
2 lbs Graphic Chemical Blue Black etching ink
26 yards of tarlatan wiping cloth
24 plastic squeegees
1 roll glassine barrier paper
20 archival boxes (11" x 14" each)
4 plastic waterproof storage boxes
I have access to an etching press, my own UV exposure unit & contact frame, and I am the printmaker so don't have to hire outside help.
That's it! All money raised for this project goes directly towards this project!
