Tesla vs. Edison: Powering Up! expands the world of our smash-hit game Tesla vs. Edison! This first expansion is loaded with upgrades that amplify the epic War of Currents to new levels:
- Build a Headquarters. Each inventor can develop their own custom Lab, Works, Office, and Studio which offer special abilities and bonus points.
- Experience Historical Events. 21 different cards bring to life the history of the War of Currents with thrilling opportunities and devastating calamities that make each turn unique.
- AIs for Solo or Group Play. Custom AI decks, each with TWO difficulty settings - an Ada Lovelace side and a Charles Babbage side - are included for all six Inventors in the expansion. Play solitaire against 1-5 AIs or add AIs for additional challenge in 2+ player games.
- Welcome a 6th Inventor, Madam C.J. Walker. Another option to choose, and enables you to play a 6-player game!
- Female Luminaries. Six other brilliant and pioneering women of the time serve as Luminaries and spice things up in the War of Currents.
- New propaganda cards. Six cards commemorating the U.S Presidents of the period.
- Broken Token Premium Organizer. A sweet birch wood insert that you can also pledge as an add-on option to organize everything in both the base game and the expansion.
- Base Game Reprint. We have entirely sold out the first print run of Tesla vs. Edison. We're offering a reprint of the base game here and we'll fulfill to our backers before anyone else when it's back in stock.

Powering Up! enables 1-6 players to enjoy an enhanced version of our rollicking tale of the War of Currents introduced by Tesla vs. Edison. Complete rules are available and we've also highlighted some of the new content here.
In addition to claiming projects, advancing in technology, or engaging in propaganda, players may now also choose to develop their Headquarters as a new Action earning essential gameplay and scoring bonuses. Four types of HQ Cards - Laboratory, Works, Office, and Studio - introduce powerful ongoing abilities, one-time effects, and special scoring criteria tailored to each inventor. Every HQ Card depicts historically accurate people, places, and things extending the story of the War of Currents.
Powering Up! also introduces a new scoring system that rewards players for expanding their companies through developing their Headquarters and focusing on company-specific opportunities for bonus points. The stock market still reigns supreme, but there are now many other ways to lead a company to victory!
Each turn, an Event Card is chosen at random imposing varied thematic conditions on play with new strategic challenges. 21 different historical Event Cards feature real-life occurrences such as the Pinkerton Detective Agency, the Blizzard of 1888, the Pullman Strike, and the International Niagara Commission. Some Event Cards affect all players equally. Others are player-specific and auctioned to the highest bidder for added excitement.
Each inventor’s AI comprises a unique deck of double-sided cards modeling normal and expert player behaviors for lifelike challenges. Tribute is paid to computing pioneers with Charles Babbage used to show the normal side of AI cards and Ada Lovelace used to show the expert side. Players may augment their game with one or more of these AI players. This enables solitaire play, and/or simply allows you to fill out a multi-player game with more active inventors.
Meet our latest inventor, Madam C. J. Walker. She offers different abilities for new strategic options and also makes 6-player games possible. A philanthropist, Madam Walker, was an African-American entrepreneur and the first female self-made millionaire in America. We are honored to celebrate her joining our game.
Additional Propaganda Cards and, for the first time, female Luminaries can be unlocked via stretch goals for more variety and challenge.
Tesla vs Edison and Powering Up! both will be manufactured in China. Copies will then be sent to our fulfillment partner depots in various regions around the world for ultimate distribution to backers. This saves you on shipping and extra taxes.
We're offering 100% free shipping to our US Kickstarter backers and are also proportionately discounting shipping to backers in the rest of the world. We recognize that even with these discounts, shipping to many parts of the world is just plain expensive, but we're doing what we can to make it easier.
Given our strategy of shipping to regional fulfillment depots, various countries will receive their copies at different times. Historically, backers in Asia and the Pacific receive their copies soonest since they are nearest to our manufacturer, then the U.S. and western Europe are relatively close together, and finally backers in the rest of the world receive theirs. We anticipate that all backers will receive their copies by October 2016, but most of you will receive your copies sooner. We'll keep you posted with more details via regular updates as we move forward into production and fulfillment.
Finally, we also hope to offer Gen Con pickup for backers. The summer con season is very important for us. There's a chance we land the ocean container here in time for the show, but if not, we're planning on air shipping a limited quantity to Indianapolis for backer pickup and sales. We realize that this may occur before some backers, particularly those in more remote locales, have received their games and we're offering Gen Con pickup to give people more fulfillment options as a result. We'll provide more details about this via updates closer to Gen Con. We hope you understand and still choose to support our project!

(Designer) Dirk Knemeyer is the creative director of Artana. This is his eighth published game, including award-winners Tesla vs. Edison, Tomorrow, and The New Science. Dirk is also a host of The Game Design Round Table podcast, a show that talks to both digital and tabletop game designers about the theory and practice of game design. Outside of gaming, Dirk is a social futurist, studying culture and technology in order to propose better systems of existence. He lives in the Boston, Massachusetts area with his wife and two of his children.
(Art Director) Heiko Günther grew up on a mostly forgotten mesa in the depths of South America. He was raised by direct descendants of the Incan Empire and trained in the ancient art of Shinobi warfare. At the age of 8, he was given into the care of a globetrotting science fiction writer and acquired degrees in literature, science, and arts. From the age of 14 until 17, he worked on fishing trawler in the far eastern seas, perfecting his knowledge of forgotten languages and Polynesian mysticism. Since then, he lives in Saarbrücken, Germany, mostly, does graphic design and likes board games.
(Lead Developer) J.R. Honeycutt is a full-time developer at Artana. In addition to Powering Up! and other projects at the studio, he is currently working on Artana's Chronicles series. JR is the co-designer of Unpub: The Published Card Game, Fantasy Fantasy Baseball, and other games. He was the lead developer for SeaFall, designed by Rob Daviau. JR plays games and helps people through DFW Nerd Night, a community organization that has helped raise more than $75,000 for charities. He lives in Fort Worth, TX with his wife, Amy, and their two cats.

Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarter projects, there are risks outside our control that could slow down delivery of the project - shipping or customs delays, acts of God, unexpected power outages, etc. However, our team at Artana has finalized almost all of the art, components, and design of Tesla vs. Edison: Powering Up. We've tested it, retested it, given it love, and are ready to send the game to print as soon as the campaign is over. Through Artana and its predecessor, Conquistador, we have successfully delivered seven Kickstarter campaigns and know how to quickly and accurately fulfill pledges for our backers.
