Play as a pioneer of early computing - such as the brilliant Ada Lovelace or the marvelous Charles Babbage - to program the very first computer. Each player has their own unique Subroutines and they compete to create the best personal program.
At the game's start, the computer is simple and you have a limited number of Operations, letting your individual strategy take shape. Later rounds bring enhancements to the computer for additional scoring opportunities.
Your goal is to identify a sequence of Engine Components in real time so your personal program generates values matching Patron and Subroutine cards. Doing so gains Influence in five different areas from the Patrons and unlocks expanded abilities for your programmer via Subroutines. Everyone's program starts at the same place - what you do after that is up to you!
As the computer evolves, and your personal program choices impact everyone else, the race to see which programmer is best really heats up! Winning will require just enough speed to stay ahead of your opponents and just enough care to not go TOO fast. After four rounds, whoever scores the most points by developing their own computer program and collecting Influence in various areas is declared the winner!

We've designed pledge levels for all budgets and tastes - from just the Base Game, to the sweet Deluxe Edition, and all the way through the fabulous art prints (more on those below) of the Collector's and Ultimate Editions - there's something for everyone!
The art prints included in the Collector's and Ultimate Editions represent a very special part of this project for us. In keeping with Artana's stance on Inclusive Fun for All, we've packed the box with many of Ada's female contemporaries. At the pinnacle of this effort, however, are three limited edition 16"x24" fine art prints we commissioned to celebrate Ada Lovelace and amazing women everywhere. Printed on 100% cotton rag archival paper, these signed, limited edition prints capture different aspects of Ada's life as commemorated by these artists and their statements below. We hope you come to love them as much as we do.
"With my contribution, I wanted to celebrate both Ada’s creativity and scientific education. In my research for this illustration, one anecdote stuck out and reminded me of my younger self when I was convinced I would invent either a working stargate or warp drive (Or both). At twelve she devised a steam-powered, winged, horse after taking an interest in 'flyology', and this seemed to capture the magic that happens when imagination and science combine, even if sometimes the results seem impossible. I like to think that this same willingness to explore fantastical ideas helped her to see the great potential of Babbage’s difference engine when others did not."
- Jacqui Davis lives in the United Kingdom and has been producing artwork for children's books and board games since 2012.
"Ada Lovelace was the sole legitimate child of Lord Byron and the Lady of Wentworth. In her 36 years on this earth, Lovelace was the first person to glimpse the deeper possibilities of calculating machines, to imagine computation the way we take for granted today. At the time, humans interfaced with calculating machines through the use of punch cards; a stack of punch cards could be considered a very early computer program. They were used mostly in the production of textiles on mechanical looms, but Lovelace's peers wanted to develop a machine that could calculate mathematical problems. I wanted to show Lovelace in that moment, alone and in the unknowing dark, being a sole witness to the light of a new world dawning. She is forever separated from it by the limitations of her mortality, her sex, and the hopelessly crude technology of her day, but she is the first to feel the warmth of that light on her face."
- Celine Loup's aesthetics are informed by vintage lifestyle photography, Swedish electronic music, and French comic books. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Chicago Reader, BUST, and Mental Floss Magazine.
"Even as the visionary insights of Ada Lovelace’s contributions to the Analytical Engine went on to inform modern computer science, her gender, premature death, and the years during which she lived stood as obstacles against recognition. While her mind flourished, her life was conscripted to standards of femininity and behavior over which she held little control. In this painting, Ada is pictured partially obscured by a traditional early Victorian object of beauty: the white rose.
That, today, we still have her research, her contributions to scientific advancement, and a small window into her mind through her writings, is a testament to her tenacity. Thank you, Ada, for going against the grain."
- Beth Sobel is a board game illustrator living in Bellingham, Washington with her husband and two cats. Her clients include Alderac Entertainment Group, Fantasy Flight Games, Foxtrot Games, Margaret Weis, One Thousand XP, Pencil First Games and Doctor Finn's Games, and Stonemaier Games.
Add-Ons will be handled after the campaign ends through our pledge manager and available to backers at the base game level and above. We find it much easier to track add-ons in the pledge manager. As such, there is no need to increase your Kickstarter pledge for add-ons though you may do so if you prefer via bundle pledges.
We have a ton of great stretch goals for this campaign and some surprises as well depending on how well we do! We're particularly excited though about the Celebrity Patrons stretch goal. When we unlock this goal, all copies will include an entire SECOND deck of patron cards featuring famous designers, artists, publishers, and other game industry luminaries such as:

Lovelace & Babbage will be manufactured in China. Copies will then be sent to our fulfillment partner depots in various regions around the world for ultimate distribution to backers. This saves you on shipping and extra taxes.
Art Prints will be sent in a poster tube separate from each game hence the additional shipping fees above for those reward levels. These prints are individually signed collectibles on high-grade paper stock and we decided that this was the best approach to prevent any shipping damage to the artwork.
We're offering deeply discounted shipping to our backers everywhere in the world. We recognize that even with these discounts, shipping to many parts of the world is just plain expensive, but we're doing what we can to make it easier. We also created bundle pledges with significantly reduced shipping rates per copy. The first copy shipped takes most of the hit - after that it's much less for each additional copy which is reflected in the bundles. This should really help international backers.
Given our strategy of shipping to regional fulfillment depots, various countries will receive their copies at different times. Historically, backers in Asia and the Pacific receive their copies soonest since they are nearest to our manufacturer, then the U.S. and western Europe are relatively close together, and finally backers in the rest of the world receive theirs. We anticipate that all backers will receive their copies by June 2019, but most of you will receive your copies sooner. We'll keep you posted with more details via regular updates as we move forward into production and fulfillment.

(Designer) Scott Almes is an engineer by day and game designer by night. Lovelace & Babbage allowed his two professions to intersect while bringing attention to some truly inventive women that helped shaped the world, like Ada Lovelace. A huge influence on his decision to create a game design around this theme was the hope to help inspire more women to enter STEM fields, coupled with a personal fascination with mechanical computers manifested by metal gears, wheels, and columns. The origins of modern computing are just mind-blowing! And Scott is really excited to partner with Artana Games to bring this great historical theme to everyone who enjoys a good puzzle!
(Lead Developer) Jessica Cassady Davis is an avid boardgamer who loves bringing great games to the great gamers who play them. Her travels around the world to various boardgame conventions have allowed her to achieve her childhood dream of running away with the circus… but this circus has boardgames! It also allowed her to develop Lovelace & Babbage, a historical theme near and dear to her heart because of the literary & technological influence of Ada Lovelace, based on playtests with countless people at these conventions. As a result, she hopes you will find Lovelace & Babbage to be a well-balanced & incredibly fun Program & Write game for gamers of all ages and mathematically abilities.
(Art Director) Heiko Günther grew up on a mostly forgotten mesa in the depths of South America. He was raised by direct descendants of the Incan Empire and trained in the ancient art of Shinobi warfare. At the age of 8, he was given into the care of a globetrotting science fiction writer and acquired degrees in literature, science, and arts. From the age of 14 until 17, he worked on fishing trawler in the far eastern seas, perfecting his knowledge of forgotten languages and Polynesian mysticism. Since then, he lives in Saarbrücken, Germany, mostly, does graphic design and likes board games.
(Illustrator) Kwanchai Moriya is an artist based in Los Angeles who works primarily in board games and book publishing. Originally hailing from New York by way of the Chicago suburbs, Kwanchai is an avid painter working mostly in acrylics with science fiction and fantasy themes. When not creating amazing art for Artana and other clients, his hobbies include making wood toys, playing board games, and talking to his tortoise, Clementine.
(Illustrator) Cynthia Lara is an artist at heart who works mostly on web design. Born in Mexico but a citizen of the world, she likes to connect and work with people on interesting concepts and ideas, no matter where they are from. Among her hobbies are painting and drawing, singing, and playing videogames and boardgames.
(Creative Director) Dirk Knemeyer is the designer of award-winning games like Tesla vs. Edison, Einstein, and The New Science, He is also a host of The Game Design Round Table podcast, a show that talks to both digital and tabletop game designers about the theory and practice of game design. Outside of gaming, Dirk is a social futurist, studying culture and technology in order to improve social systems. He lives in the Boston, Massachusetts area with his wife and two of his children.
Founded in 2015, Artana produces quality games and accessories to customers around the world. Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarter projects, there are risks outside our control that could slow down delivery of the project - shipping or customs delays, acts of God, disruptions of the space-time continuum, etc. However, our team at Artana has finalized almost all of the art, components, and design of Lovelace & Babbage. We've tested it, retested it, given it love, and are ready to send the game to print soon after the campaign is over. Through Artana and its predecessor, Conquistador, we have successfully delivered twelve Kickstarter campaigns and know how to quickly and accurately fulfill pledges for our backers.
