MAGDALEN HSU-LI & GREANE- "ART AFTER BABY" CD & BOOK PROJECT
2 indie music artists recently had a baby. Picking up the pieces of their creative lives, they're embarking on a new cd & book project.
In the summer of 2006, music artist Magdalen Hsu-Li moved to Boston to finish her music degree after releasing 4 indie albums on her own record label and touring incessantly for a decade. There she met music artist Greane (Adam Dias) who after a long and circuitous route, had just embarked on the start of his burgeoning music career. They fell in love unexpectedly and after a "tumultuous" start to their relationship full of happy beginnings and painful endings, they graduated and began a new life together in Seattle, Wa. He was 22 and she was 36 when they met. The significant difference in their ages was unique, and there were many who doubted their relationship would last. But their May/December romance was the real deal. As Magdalen turned 40, she realized she was approaching her last chance to have a child - but the timing was off. Greane was just beginning his music career and deserved the chance to have a fresh unencumbered start. Out of sheer love, Greane decided to selflessly go on the journey of parenthood with Magdalen, even though he was worried about his music career getting sidetracked. Their son Evan was born in the summer of 2011. It was an incredibly difficult, complicated, painful pregnancy, cesarean section, and recovery for Magdalen. The emotional and physical wear and tear they experienced would have ended most people's relationships. But despite these harsh beginnings, in the darkest of times, their relationship only grew stronger. Now as they are picking up the pieces of their creative lives, their struggles have become overwhelming. Magdalen who was the primary breadwinner has not been able to tour consistently to make a living due to her recovery and childcare issues. Greane had to leave his day job to care for Magdalen and Evan during her recovery. They struggle each day to find even an ounce of spare time to work on creative projects. Since giving birth, Magdalen has often said, "There are times I wonder if I will ever be able to write a new song, make a new cd, or finish my book project - will I ever create again?" Adam often says " All I want is to get my career off the ground. I just want to be able to make my first cd, start touring, and support my family”. This winter they realized they needed to move back to the east coast where Evan's grandparents live to get the childcare support they need. Magdalen realized, "Without a support system, it's very difficult for new parents to raise a child on their own. I realized the words that Hillary Clinton once said, "It takes a village to raise a child", are so true." "We need to create that village for Evan and ourselves, so that we can continue to be artists and live creative lives".
Being new parents is hard enough for anyone, but being a new parent and an artist can sometimes seem impossible. Magdalen and Greane believe it's possible to be great parents, and keep their artistic dreams alive despite the challenges they face. With your help they can get a "kick start' for their creative projects. Greane's debut cd and Magdalen's first EP of new songs since 2005 will be recorded, and Magdalen's new book will get written and published. They can also move back to the east coast to get the childcare support they need, and resume touring for a living again. Magdalen says, "With that support in place, we can tour, knowing that Evan is safe with family that love and care about him as much as we do. We will have enough of that inner, introspective time needed for song writing, book writing, and art making. We can be the best parents for Evan if we make sure we have enough time for him as well as for ourselves...if we find a way to continue to be the artists we are.
Greane's goal is to record and release his debut cd before or by January 2013. Magdalen's goal is to have her new EP CD and book written and released before or by May 2013. Those dates are when they hope to have the actual cd's and book mailed out to all the backers and all the awards. The cd release party will likely happen sometime around May to August 2013 based on when backers can schedule and may happen either in the Seattle, Wa or Providence/Ri Boston, Ma area. Performance & Lecture events at colleges, schools, conferences, churches, or private events or dinners can be scheduled anytime that is available for both Magdalen, Greane, and the college programmers or backers.
