We are a three-piece band from Oxford, England, and are in the final stages of recording our debut album
Almost all of the work is complete, with nearly everything written and recorded, and all of it sounding properly amazing! And we now need your help to get it all finished.
Here's us rehearsing one of the new songs, Broken Angel...Video by Tom Lindsay (email@example.com)
We are now looking at only around ten more days in the studio to complete what we have been so lovingly crafting hitherto: guitar overdubs, backing vocals, and all that essential final fairy dust, that will transform the record from sounding merely great to being yer actual, bona fide, stone cold classic! This will cost in the region of £2,000.
The songs, the music, the performances, the VIBE is all properly stunning and we CANNOT WAIT to now get it finished and share it with you!
After the recording is complete, the next necessary step will be to mix and master the album. This will cost an additional £2,000. We are then seeking a final £1,000 to help make a couple of simple promos and other publicity, to start spreading the word.
A nearly finished track, I Trained A Spy...
Acoustic rehearsal: Gimme All You Got - dang, that's what we shoulda called this campaign!
In 1994, I moved onto a boat on the Oxford Canal and founded Oxford’s renowned performance space, The Catweazle Club. Having long been a guitar player, it was also then that I started writing songs for the first time.
With several of the amazing musicians I met at Catweazle over the years, I went on to record two albums (Strange News From Another Star, 2005, and Let The Music Out, 2010), songs from which have been played variously on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4.
I also was fortunate enough to perform those albums at major festivals throughout the world, including Glastonbury, WOMAD & Green Man, and opened up for artists as varied as Diana Krall, Carlos Santana and The Incredible String Band.
Some people have said of my last two efforts:
“A great artist” - Gilles Peterson on Radio 1
“Seriously gorgeous sounds” - Mike Scott (The Waterboys)
"Sublime" - Healthy Concerts
"Nectar for the soul" - Daily Info
The Catweazle Club
The passion that I feel for music – and my belief in its profound magical properties – led me to create The Catweazle Club in Oxford, over twenty years ago.
What started out as a very simple idea: a forum where people could share their music, poetry, stories and songs, has gone on to become something of a deeply-loved institution of international repute.
This year, from humble beginnings in the snug of The Victoria Arms in Jericho, The Catweazle Club celebrates its 21st anniversary. As well as spawning sister clubs in London, Exeter, Brighton, New York and Toronto, and having its own quarterly magazine, Catweazle remains resolutely a community performance space and at the very heart of Oxford's alternative culture - the consummate forum for music, poetry, story and song, and all manner of acoustic artistry.
Music (and creative performance) is to me a sacred, vital and wonderful thing. It continues to be one of the deepest honours of my life - perhaps even my purpose - to coax and conjure and nurture that from others - through both my song writing workshops and also my role in holding space at Catweazle.
Being instrumental in the birth of such an inspiring and vibrant creative community is an achievement of which I am hugely proud.
Of The Catweazle Club, some other people have have said:
“Britain’s most intimate performance space” – The TIMES
“An essential cultural interlude” – The GUARDIAN
“Magical” – RADIO 4

Prior to this point, I have made two albums - and have had a respectable degree of success with them - but I feel that it is only now, with this sweet and rocking three piece band, that I am really starting to find my voice and confidence as a song writer and performer. And as a composer, I feel I have now developed my craft to the point where I feel the songs stand up against anything else out there.
I have been making music with drummer, Joel Bassuk, for the past four or five years - we are undoubtedly soul twins - and after together embarking upon a year-long bass odyssey, during which we tried every named and famed bassist in (and on) the game - we finally discovered the missing link in wunderkind Josh Rigal, 25. No one I have ever played with has both the chops AND the chemistry anywhere close to that which Josh brings to the picnic.
Ah yes, The Chemistry – that rare and precious synergetic happenstance; that elusive spark; El Duende: the intangible mystery upon which all great music depends, is sublimely abundant within Art Theefe. I feel very lucky indeed to have found myself in a band like this.
And so, working with Art Theefe: Josh, Joel, and Richard Neuberg behind the desk - extraordinary people and musicians all - I feel we have assembled the ultimate dream-team to bring these songs and music to life. This album is beyond doubt the one of which I am - by far - the most proud and excited to share with the world.
So, my deepest and most heartfelt THANK YOU for whatever you feel able to contribute to this project - from a single fiver to the full five k: it's gonna make us so happy to finally be able to share this beautiful music with you, and also hopefully bring YOU a great sense of reward to have been an essential part of the process with us.
See you with our (and your) new album early in the Spring
Matt, Josh and Joel.
Risks and challenges
In terms of our commitment to finishing and releasing this album, there are no risks whatsoever. The only issue I can forsee at this stage is that the projected release date could possibly run over by a few weeks, simply because unforseen shit happens when you have a few links in the chain.
But please rest assured that you will absolutely receive that which your donation pledge promises. If for some crazy, off-the-horizon reason means that they cannot be fulfilled, I guarantee that I will get your money back to you asap (with free gig tickets and other tasty freebies by way of apology).
