About this project
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890 – 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century genre authors. (-Wikipedia)
This project is for the production of limited edition castings of a sculptural portrait bust of the Cthulhu mythos author H.P. Lovecraft. The bust was digitally sculpted by artist Josh Dunlap and will be professionally cast in a variety of high quality materials (see information below). The final pieces will stand approximately four inches high, about the size of a soda can.

EDITIONS AND MATERIALS
Marble Limited Edition
The marble edition of the bust will only be produced for this Kickstarter project. It will be an edition limited to the total number of busts chosen by backers as a reward. For instance; if backers choose 40 marble busts, then only 40 will ever be produced. If 200 are chosen, then only 200 will ever be made. The busts will be individually hand numbered.
The marble edition will be produced by mixing Italian marble dust with "water clear" resin to simulate the translucent quality and subsurface scattering of light as seen in ancient Greek and Roman marble sculptures. The Italian marble dust we will use comes from the very same Carrara quarries as the block of marble that Michelangelo used to sculpt his masterpiece David!
Bronze Limited Edition
The bronze edition of the bust is strictly limited to 25 pieces. Because the edition is more limited and the materials used to produce it are more expensive, it will cost more than the marble edition. The busts will be individually hand numbered.
The bronze edition is produced by mixing real powdered bronze metal with resin to simulate the glow and finish of hot forged sculptures. The piece is cast and then polished to bring out the metallic quality, treated with a patina and sealed.
Acid Green Limited Edition
The acid green edition of the bust is strictly limited to 20 pieces. Because the edition is more limited and the materials used to produce it are more expensive, it will cost more than the marble and bronze editions. The busts will be individually hand numbered.
The acid green edition is produced by mixing the casting resin with a dayglo green powdered pigment originally designed for surfboard epoxy lamination. The result is a very unnatural neon green sculpture.
Glow in the Dark Pink Limited Edition
The glow in the dark pink edition of the bust is strictly limited to 10 pieces. Because the edition is more limited and the materials used to produce it are more expensive, it will cost more than the other editions. The busts will be individually hand numbered.
The glow in the dark pink edition is produced by mixing the casting resin with a non-toxic photoluminescent powdered pigment. The bust will appear dayglo pink under daylight, it is charged by light and will glow pink in the dark, and will fluoresce a bright pink under UV blacklight. A most unusual and unique bust!

Please Note: All images above are digital renders of the sculpture, as the project exists to fund the actual castings. The final results may vary slightly in color and finish, but these images should give you a fair representation. Photos of the actual material that the busts will be cast with are also shown: marble powder, bronze powder, acid green pigment, glow in the dark pink and green pigments, mixed with high quality professional casting resin.
The Lovecraft bust was sculpted by artist Josh Dunlap. Josh is a graduate of The Savannah College of Art and Design and has worked in 3D, digital design and special effects make-up for film and television. He has worked on such films as Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, and Robocop.
The busts will be molded and cast in the United States by artist Ron Lee. Mr. Lee has 40 years experience in manufacturing resin art castings of impeccable detail and superior quality.
I'm Erin Smith. I organized this Kickstarter project and drew the Add On bookplate artwork (see Add Ons below).
This Kickstarter project will fund the production and delivery of the limited edition H.P. Lovecraft sculptures to backers.
The digital sculpture by Josh Dunlap has already been completed and is shown in the rendered images used on this page. Next, we need to print the sculpture on an ultra high resolution 3D printer at the studio of Moddler in San Francisco.
The print will then be professionally molded by Ron Lee and the busts cast from these molds. The sculptures will then be cleaned, finished, packed and shipped to backers! Our delivery estimate has taken into consideration this process with some buffer added to cover unforeseen production delays.
Additional Marble Busts: "Add On" as many marble Lovecraft busts as you would like to any pledge level! This is the ONLY time they will be made available, so please plan accordingly.
ADD ON marble bust: $65 ($85 international) for each additional marble bust.
Cthulhu Bookplates: Packet of 108 (12 each of 9 unique designs) "Ex Libris" bookplates for all the weird tale tomes and Necronomicon in your home library. Inspired by the Chulhu mythos of H.P. Lovecraft, printed on acid-free ph neutral ivory laid paper, approximately the size of a poker card. See the previous bookplate project page HERE for full details and pictures of each bookplate design!
ADD ON bookplates: $50 ($62 int'l) for each packet of 108.
The H.P. Lovecraft busts and any Add Ons will be shipped via USPS. The shipping costs cover actual shipping and packing materials to ensure the sculptures are adequately and securely packed. The busts will be wrapped fully in bubble wrap and then floated in biodegradable packing peanuts.
Canadian Backers ONLY: There is a small savings on international shipping from the USA to Canada. If you would like to receive a small rebate, please have a paypal account and I will send you a rebate based on the actual cost of shipping to Canada after the project has been completed and shipped.
Risks and challenges
The digital master sculpt has been completed. We need to 3D print it and make the production molds and castings. This is a large undertaking, but one we are prepared for. Our love of H.P. Lovecraft's weird tales demands a commitment to a high level of quality and attention to detail.
My previous Kickstarter campaign to produce a series of Lovecraft inspired Cthulhu "Ex Libris" bookplates was successfully funded and shipped ahead of schedule.
Shipping requires a large investment of time, especially preparing international customs forms, but I believe we have scheduled a realistic timeline for reward fulfillment. I will be posting regular updates to the project page as we make the 3D master print, procure materials, make the molds and casts and start to ship busts to backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
