What's the book about?
Bobby's Biggest Bubble is a funny and whimsical story about a little boy who wins one million gumballs. With the help of his best friend, they use the gumballs in the most imaginative ways, like: playing marbles, making gum statues, creating a giant gumball mountain and walking up the side of a tree in a pair of gumshoes.
Then Bobby decides to create . . . "The Biggest Bubble in the World!"
Little Bit of My History
Long ago, I made several attempts to break into the children's book market. But as anyone who has tried to enter the publishing market knows - it takes time, persistence and a lot of luck. Pursuing a career as a children's book writer/illustrator wasn't paying the bills. So my dream to draw and tell my own stories had to be put aside . . .
Fast Forward to today: KickStarter changes everything.
Basically this project is like pre-ordering the book; I plan to do a small run, limited 1st printing. If this project succeeds, it will allow me to create the book as I envision it.
Little Bit of the Story's History
I don't remember how my idea for this story
came about - but I do know it was shortly after my uncle, Bob
Dunzelman, passed away after his bout with Leukemia. To
understand this connection - you'd need to know how much he influenced me as a
kid. He was funny. He was creative. Most important, he proved to me that anyone can
keep the heart and soul of a child no matter what age.
Shortly after his passing, I doodled this little character:
character didn't exactly resemble my uncle - but he looked like a kid named
"Bobby" to me. Very quickly, it all came together . . . the doodle, the bubblegum bubble and
my uncle's fun-loving spirit. I had my story.
I dedicate this book to my uncle; I think its the kind of fun, playful and creative story he would have loved.
The Book Details
First I do pencil sketches on paper. The pencil sketches are then scanned into ArtRage Pro 3.5 for outline inking. Then the images are brought into Photoshop + Painter to be finalized in color.
Hopefully, with your help, my goal of $5,500 can be reached. I want to produce a high quality, case bound, hard cover children's book.
I'm currently ahead of schedule and I plan to have the book ready to go to print in June. With that schedule, that should allow the books to be printed, shipped and delivered by the middle of September 2012.
Here's what I can get done with $5,500 . . .
- Book Size: 11' by 8.5"
- Pages: 36 full color pages inside (40 total including cover)
- Cover: Case Bound Hard Cover (gloss UV varnish)
- Paper: 105 lb stock (coated gloss text)
- Registered ISBN/UPC
- Bookmarks and Buttons
- Bubble Wrap Protected Envelopes + Mailing Tubes
- Postage (for anywhere in the continental US)
(Please Note: International postage must add additional cost to their pledge as noted in each reward.)
Beyond the $5,500 Goal?
If this project is successful and surpasses the intended goal, I plan to make the book even better by:
- adding dust jacket
- upping the overall printing quality
- using thicker paper stock
- embossing the cover
- increasing the the book size
- bonus sketch + material pages added in the back of the book
The higher this goes -- the more I can add and improve on the book.
Finally, I want to personally thank you all for taking the time to read about my project. Either way this project goes, it has already made a strong impact in my life and future.
Please feel free to visit http://www.arrrggghhh.com/ for some of my character and product designs of the past.
No. Sad to say, KickStarter pledges can only be made through Amazon accounts. KickStarter has tried to get other e-financial backers, but only Amazon had the interest and ability to setup a credit system that "hold" pledges until a project successfully reaches it goal.
No, because without the funding from this project there are no books. So collecting money for something that may not be created . . . that'd be a mess and nightmare.
If this project succeeds and the books get printed, I plan to create interactive e-books versions of the story. The goal was always to get the story physically printed. I know the market is changing; But there's something special about a child holding a real book, the touch of paper and the scent of turning pages.
Q: I want a second book, but your rewards don't offer multiple purchases. Is there a why to get a second book?
All pledges $25 and over will now get a 2nd book.
Once someone pledges to a reward, I can not edit or alter that information. This is why reading the updates is important since the updates will inform you of changes and the projects progress. Even now that the project has succeeded, I will still be using KickStarter updates to keep everyone informed.
To thank all who wanted a copy.
To help those who have more than one child.
To help spread the book around.
To allow everyone to give a copy to a niece, nephew or friend's child.
The absolute goal: to get this into kids' hands and hopefully give them an enjoyable memory . . .
