SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards is back again with brand new buildings from the last five years! Presented along most of the examples gathered in the first edition, they aim to complete a more updated collection that keeps up with relevant contemporary architecture.
SCALA is an ongoing project which, through a standard deck of poker cards, provides an overview of several architectural works of interest in recent years. The four suits define the size of the projects from the small scale of pavilions and houses to the urban and infrastructural range.
In addition to bringing together the most representative architects and their production over recent years, it is our intention to carry out a wide review within emerging countries in the current architectural panorama, shaping a quality object carefully designed that also fits the parameters of the traditional poker card game.
Printed by Legends Playing Card Co.
SCALA is a standard deck of French playing cards which follows the guidelines of the poker size (3.5 x 2.5 inches – 88.9 x 63.5 mm), at the same time providing an account of contemporary architecture. In this light, SCALA is a digest of 52 of the most relevant buildings from the last 25 years, from all 5 continents and more than 20 countries.
Each card suit has a specific hue to highlight the different scales of architecture. As the position of the building already creates a directivity, the pipes aren't reversible.
All 54 cards that compose the deck are printed in Elite Finish, a high quality card stock developed by Legends Playing Cards Co, which is very slick and smooth. Every single playing card has been carefully redrawn by our team.
SCALA is a beautiful gift if you have relatives or friends interested in architecture and design, either if you are a collector of different kinds of playing card decks or if you are a poker player and want to surprise your friends. Its unique design style makes it a fresh and creative item.
The collection is updated with 13 new buildings from the last five years. Distributed among the four suits of the deck, together they create an heterogeneous ‘suit of suits’ by adding some of the most emerging practices in architecture since the previous edition of SCALA until today, such as BIG, Amanda Levete, Johnston Marklee and O'Donnell + Tuomey.
The thirteen new entries are distributed in a correlative sequence, so in this collection you can find a new ace, a new '2', a new '3', and so on until the 'K' is reached.
Some of the cards that were already present in the first edition of SCALA have been slightly modified and improved following advice from players as well as our own criteria. These changes affect the color palette, contrast, and brightness, among other features. With this amendments the objective is to have a more refined, recognizable and compact collection.
The new tuck box design for the 2nd Edition is mainly characterized by its inverted colors, so in this special occasion the case will be white with black lettering and details. The same quality of the previous one is guaranteed by the uncoated matte cardboard and debossing details developed by LPCC.
The back incorporates a revised pattern with details of the new buildings incorporated into the deck, as well as changes in the edges to avoid some of the problems with contrast between front and back that were noticed by players in the first edition.
New versions of our highly appreciated joker, Chinese artist Ai Wewei, will be included in the collection.
Same as we did for the first print run of SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards, a 25-unit limited edition of uncut sheets for collectors will be produced, featuring all fifty-two designs in one single piece of 61,5 x 57,5 cm (24.2 x 22.4 in).
Some of the drawings used for our playing cards have also been adapted to bigger formats, and turned into high-resolution posters. An example of each suit has been included for a total of 4 new designs. Their size is 32 x 32 cm (12.6 x 12.6 inches) with a blank margin in order to be framed and hung on the wall. With the JUST THE DRAWINGS reward you can receive a digital version of your favourite building —that you will let us know about once you fill our survey right after the end of the campaign. Also, add 50€ on top of your pledge and you will receive all four printed posters, no matter the reward you choose.
The complete list of the newly-designed architecture posters is as follows: MONADNOCK · Atlas House / LAN ARCHITECTURE · Euravenir Tower / LEDERER RAGNARSDÓTTIR OEI · Frankfurt Historical Museum / BIG · Copenhill Ski Slope.
10,000 € - Suit of suits poster. A high-resolution digital poster with all the new designs included in SCALA 2nd edition will be eligible in the JUST THE DRAWINGS pledge —and the printed poster will be included as part of the SUPERBRICK reward.
20,000 € - Upgraded tuck box. Golden foil details will be included in our new tuck box.
SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards has been disclosed in prestigious architecture, design and playing cards media such as Curbed, Archdaily, Fubiz, Domus design or Kardify, and broadcasted in more than 10 languages, such as Spanish, English, German, Russian, Turkish or Shqip.
The reason to develop this second edition of SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards is twofold. The first is the high degree of acceptance and support that the previous edition received even though it was AaC's first project. This initial success allowed us to set up a practice and drove us to develop new products and activities related to our education: architecture. That's why, in order to perpetuate the collection in time, we find it necessary to print a large new run to allow us to continue expanding it and reaching out more places along the world.
The second reason is the very leitmotiv of the collection, which aims to be a sample of contemporary architecture. It then requires a process of research and renovation every certain time period to be able to capture the emerging buildings and practices that are appearing in the current architectural scene. This update allows SCALA to escape obsolescence, which is a common aspect in other collections of architecture playing cards we have encountered along the way. In the end, we try to be faithful to the concept that the first edition of SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards carried out.
The experience acquired in our first SCALA print run and successive campaigns will be of much use in order to control every aspect of the process. We will resort to the same partners that have been involved in the production and distribution of SCALA for the past three years, which we hope will keep unexpected issues and delays to a minimum.
We are Juanlu, Pedro, and Miguel, and we are Arquitectura a Contrapelo: a Spanish design & architecture team based in Seville. The three of us are young architects that rethink the relationship between urban phenomena, building processes and its ways of communicating across the written and graphical languages. Following the success of previous Kickstarter campaigns SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards (1st Edition), ORDER · Poster Series and EXPO · Architecture Memory Game, we are back with our favorite collection, intending to take a step forward on the current architectural panorama, collecting contemporary examples and making use of emerging tools and means of expression. As a result, we have developed a very personal approach trying to bring a fresh perspective to the worlds of playing cards & architecture.

Risks and challenges
The aim of our project is to fund a large enough print run of SCALA so that we can continue to develop and expand it in the years to come. Rewards and goals have been created with this in mind, as all funds will be reinvested in the distribution and diffusion of our initiative. Please note there is a chance that delays may occur in the worldwide shipment of the decks, as the size of the printing order will vary depending on the final funding results.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
