Order · The Architect's Mind Poster Series
ORDER is the new project by Arquitectura a Contrapelo, the creators of SCALA · Architecture Playing Cards. It consists of an open series of conceptual posters which try to retrieve specific «orders» from the unnoticeable, everyday systems that surround us, whether it be architecture, cities, houses, families, words or sports. The project aims to offer an objective, detached view of the worlds we inhabit, presenting them as decomposed in their simple elements arranged in a fresh, unusual way.
Available in both English and Spanish.
We architects are nuts. Don’t blame us: we are told to solve a dozen different problems at once, keeping track of each one’s characteristics and trying to interbreed them successfully. This forces us to analyze every aspect as a separate entity, immersed in a complex net of relations. That’s why we are always striving for clarity, and that’s where these posters come from. Each of them means to transform a quotidian reality into a simple figure-ground composition: city blocks, house plans, architects, letters, people, grand prix, portraying them exactly as what they are. The criteria for this new order are none other than pure concepts: time and shape.
The series is currently made up of six A2-format (11,7” x 16,5” in / 42 x 59,4 cm), vertically-aligned posters. They are printed using a CMYK color scheme, in a 50 lb / 140 g cover paper with matte finish. Shipped rolled up and protected with a rigid cardstock. Although some of the photographs show titles and data written in Spanish, English translations have been developed as well.
There will be also a special print of a limited edition, in extra quality 100 lb / 300 g cover paper, with small debossing details. We are currently developing it with Les Chevalets – House of Letterpress using printmaking relief and handmaking techniques. The print run will be of 25 units for I · Blocks (Manzanas) and 25 units for VII · Cities (Ciudades), as was announced in past updates. You can pledge for them in the related reward and choose your option in the post-campaign survey.
Every poster contains two graphic scales in the left and right margins. The right one is used to measure the underlying concept (time or size), while the left one either describes the content (alphabet names, family dynasties, architectural styles) or is meant as a guideline to enhance size comparisons, since all figures are drawn at the same scale.
The symbol at the bottom of the design is a fleuron. This typographic symbol was used since early Greek and Latin texts as a way to divide paragraphs, before line breaks became more common in modern books. Here they are meant to stress the «gap» between each concept and the following in the series.
I · Blocks
Order I · Blocks (Manzanas) is a digest of all the blocks that compound the historical center of a city. Ordered by size, with its own cadastral reference and highlighting the most significant urban elements within each of them. Every block is treated as a piece same as the others in a single figure-ground composition where the city, decomposed, allows broader readings. Available in two versions: with and without indicative texts.
II · Letters
Order II · Letters (Letras) shows the evolution of the latin alphabet throughout the different stages of history, from those theories that relate it to Egyptian hieroglyphs to its settlement into the Phoenician culture and Greek and Latin decantations. These structures would be radically altered with the appearance of printing press in the middle of the 15th century.
III · Architects
Order III · Architects (Arquitectos) gathers the name of 2,900 of these professionals, from Ancient Egypt to the last Pritzker Prize winners, in a continuous sequence of styles, periods and places where construction has been part of the human endeavour. Names up to the Renaissance, which can hardly be classified as architects in the modern sense, are thus written in Italics.
IV · People
Order IV · People (Gente) is a family tree of the various lineages that took over the transition between Republican and Imperial Rome. Each individual is treated as a node in an intricate net of family, political and clientelistic relationships that tries to reflect the idiosyncrasies of Roman society. Available in two versions: color and black & white.
V · Circuits
Order V · Circuits (Circuitos) is a collection of every Grand Prix ever disputed in the Formula One World Championship since its inception in 1950, drawn at the same scale and overlapping the different layouts throughout their historic evolution. This wholesome view allows comparisons between classic venues such as Monza, Silverstone or Spa, and gigantic, old-fashioned road circuits Nürburgring and Pescara. Available in two versions: with and without indicative texts.
VI · Houses
Order VI · Houses (Casas) is a compendium of typological housing development in a city like Seville over the centuries, from large palatial examples of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries to reduced housing subsistence among the lower social classes, cohabiting in the same physical-historical frame. Available in two versions: with and without indicative texts.
VII · Cities
Order VII · Cities (Ciudades) is the special 7th poster, released after the campaign is finally funded: a digest of some 250 walled areas from urban settlements around the five continents. Places like New York, Moscow, London or Beijing, all the way down to Dublin, Munich, Mumbai or Jerusalem, according to their historical sizes. This poster is now available as part of the collection and will be included as a free extra in the 'I WANT IT ALL' and 'ARE YOU THE POKER GUYS?' rewards.
I HAVE AN IDEA!
If you feel like you have a great concept to be part of the ORDER series, or would want a special version of the existing ones applied to your context, we accept commissions! Pledge for the I Have an Idea! reward in the list and we will contact you on the matter as soon as possible to try to reach an agreement.
We are Juanlu, Pedro and Miguel, and we are Arquitectura a Contrapelo: a Spanish design & architecture team based in Seville. The three of us are young architects that rethink the relationship between urban phenomena, building processes and its ways of communication across the written and graphical languages. Following the success of SCALA, a playing cards collection which gathered architectures from the XX century and introduced them into the poker field, our latest challenge is ORDER, the conceptual poster series that looks at everyday reality with a design-oriented mind.
Your feedback about our work would be very significant for us. We deem every suggestion and comment essential, and we love to gather and share with interesting people.
