About

Song of the Firefly is a story-driven 3D exploration platformer. Take control of Sam, one of the last surviving humans, as he searches through a ruined city for his only friend, Sarah.

Years before the events of the game, the world ended. Humanity was all but wiped out, and the atmosphere was coated with a thick, dark cloud. Sam and Sarah are some of the only survivors, and when Sarah goes missing, Sam begins to search the desolate city in order to find her. With help from the scientist Dr. Williams, Sam must brave the dark in his search. But all is not as it seems. Dark creatures lurk in the shadows, and Sam is stalked by a sinister masked man. As Sam begins to discover the truth about the events of the past, only the light from his lantern can keep the darkness at bay, but his light is growing dimmer...

Song of the Firefly is a unique style of side-scrolling 3D platformer, achieving all the precision of 2D platforming mechanics, while still giving you the freedom to explore a rich 3D environment. You'll explore the city, with the light from your lantern protecting you from the shadow creatures in the dark. However, your lantern won't last forever, so you'll have to collect fireflies to keep it lit. Dr. Williams also needs these fireflies to help him power his machinery, though, so you'll have to choose between staying protected, or risking the dark to supply Dr. Williams with the fireflies he needs to help you find Sarah. As you explore, you'll find Sarah's inventions scattered around the city. These allow you to traverse the terrain in new ways, and expand your movement options. Be on the look out for what else you might be able to find, too, because lost in this city lie the secrets to the past.

We also have a couple of videos from the last time we launched on here, so give those a look too!

Song of the Firefly was launched on Kickstarter last year, but did not quite reach its funding goal. Since then, the game has been re-evaluated and re-planned. After months of work developing new content to show, and planning how to fund the project, we have found a way to secure some of the funding from other sources. However, this is not enough to finish the game, and the project still needs this campaign to supply the remaining funds necessary for development. Because this is only funding part of the development, the goal is lower than it was during the original campaign, but any pledges are incredibly welcome, and any excess funds raised will be put towards making the game even better.

The game has already been Greenlit on Steam, so once it is ready it will be available to buy there. The digital copies of the game offered as rewards will also be provided as Steam keys. Take a look at the page for the game on Steam, too:

Song of the Firefly on Steam

As well as our funding goal for getting the project made, we have a number of things we'd like to do, if we get enough extra funding from this campaign. We'll reveal these as we go, so be sure to check back regularly!

Here is also an approximate look at how we plan to use the initial funding from the campaign to get the game made. There are a lot of things that go into a game, and a lot of places where funding could vary, but this gives an overview of how we plan to split the £8,000, and what we're planning to spend it on.

We're offering a few rewards for people who pledge certain amounts to this campaign. Each successive reward includes all the items in the previous reward tier, so you'll never miss out on anything by pledging more. These rewards are all listed on the side of this page, but here's a summary of them anyway. We've also listed them with estimated delivery dates, which are very much subject to change, so please keep that in mind, as it may not be possible to deliver everything before it is ready. We'll try our best to make sure that we get as much of each reward out as we can, but please be patient if things run a little behind schedule.

Arpeggio Games is a small UK-based game development company. While this is their first title, the developers have all worked together before, and all have the expertise and experience necessary to produce this game.

Because the team is small, some of the work is being contracted out. This allows us to develop and polish the game in a reasonable time frame. We maintain a working relationship with everyone we contract with, allowing us all to work together to produce the best game possible.

 Jonathan Spong - Lead Artist/Writer

Jonathan is the lead artist for Song of the Firefly. His role is managing the design and aesthetics of the game, and he also supplies our concept art. He also works to complete and polish the narrative, working out the events of the story from the core concept to the smallest details. Jonathan has a first-class degree in Creative Writing from York St. John University, and has been creating stories and artwork for a large portion of his life.

 Oli Williams - Lead Programmer

Oli's role is to design and implement the mechanics of the game, taking them from an idea to being part of the game. He also aids the management of the project and administration. Oli has a degree in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, and has previously worked with Microsoft in software development.

 Edward Kay-Coles - Project Manager

Edward's primary role is to keep the project on schedule, to organise the team, and make sure that the development is heading in the right direction. This often means he works on the game directly, providing programming, design, and development. Edward graduated from the University of Cambridge alongside Oliver with a degree in Computer Science, and has pursued game design and development for 9 years before working professionally.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge on this project is ensuring that the game is completed before the budget runs out. Our development team are working full time on this project to ensure that this doesn't happen, and that the game is the highest quality possible. We are confident that this will not happen, and are dedicated to ensuring that it doesn't.

There are also development challenges to overcome. Some of the concepts and mechanics are quite unique, which means we're doing a lot of experimentation, and making sure all of this works well together is a challenging feat that costs both money and time. We have taken these challenges into account when determining the schedule and budget, and we believe that this experimentation will result in an exciting new experience for everyone who plays the game.

This is an ambitious project for a small independent team, so we're having to find creative new ways to provide a high quality experience. We may also encounter unforeseen challenges, but we will do everything we can to ensure that these are overcome. As a consequence, the release date of the game may be pushed back from our current estimates, but we are dedicated to making sure that this game is produced to the quality and standard it should be.

We are confident that with the support from this campaign we can overcome all of these challenges, however difficult they may be, and create something that everyone here can enjoy.
