About this project
We're both architects with an appreciation for things that are beautiful and practical. Through furniture we've been exploring methods for creating organic forms that are both simple and easy to create. We've been inspired by the depth of creativity involved in Papercraft: folding simple shapes to create beautiful objects.
The technique we've developed involves connecting planes of plywood with piano hinges such that folding gives the furniture piece its shape and structure.
The first two pieces in our line are the Flip Shelf and Origami Chair. We're excited to be able to offer these to the Kickstarter community to help us raise funds to exhibit our work at the upcoming Interior Design Show in Toronto.
The Flip Shelf
The Flip Shelf is part sculptural, part functional and all playful! It saves space while folded against the wall and when raised, can be a side table for a lounge chair, a night stand for your bed or a parcel shelf at your front door. The optional LED light is great for reading and when folded, it creates a soft, in-direct mood light.
The Origami Chair
We love this chair! Inspired by papercraft, we designed it to be simple and beautiful. The origami chair’s nest-like shape is generous and ergonomic, while the thin baltic birch shell keeps it efficient and minimal. The facets of the shell are connected with piano hinges - this give the chair some flex for added comfort. The thin shell sits on top of an elegantly folded steel frame. You can choose your finish in natural walnut veneer or 3 bright, solid-colour laminates.
Please see the FAQ below regarding international shipping for the Origami Chair.
Who We Are
We are both architects and partners of blackLAB architects inc in Toronto, Ontario. Along with our two other partners and friends, Joe and Sarah Knight, we founded our firm in 2012 and specialize in modern residential architecture. We love to design spaces for living in - it’s hard not to dream about furniture too! Through Kickstarter, we are excited make our unique furniture designs accessible to you. If you are curious to learn more about our buildings visit us at: blacklabarchitects.com
We've both been designing and building furniture for more than 10 years now. Also, Tony Round worked with Ivan Ilic last year to launch Made to Measure Modern on Kickstarter. Working through a Kickstarter campaign from start to finish has been a very valuable experience and informed a lot of aspects of this project.
Being able to share with a wider audience makes any project much more rewarding. We've put together this Kickstarter campaign to help us raise funds to exhibit the Origami Chair and Flip Shelf at a show called Studio North in January 2015. This is part of the 2015 Interior Design Show which is the heart of Toronto's design week.
We also appreciate that Kickstarter is a unique opportunity to make our creations available directly to a wonderful and supportive community!

Risks and challenges
We've worked on a Kickstarter project before (Tony Round worked with Ivan Ilic to bring you Made to Measure Modern) and fully understand the reality of fulfilment. For this reason we've limited the number of Flip Shelves and Origami Chairs we'll need to produce in the short term. We've given ourselves what we feel are conservative ship dates.
Shipping furniture is always a challenge, and again we've learned from past experience. Indeed part of the thinking behind the furniture we've developed is that reducing volume by folding the furniture goes a long way to controlling shipping costs.
We have the means and the knowledge to fabricate these products ourselves - we've been building furniture for years.
We fully understand that ongoing communication with backers, in the form of project updates and timely replies to questions, is critical in maintaining accountability.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
