About this project
A Road Less Traveled is a cross-country photography tour & photo book project, focusing on children with special needs.
We will be putting together a beautiful collection of stories and photographs into a coffee table book, dedicated to sharing stories of families that are on this "road less traveled."
A road that, in our opinion, isn't talked about enough.
A journey that needs to be shared.
We want to bless the families that will be a part of this project with a photo session that celebrates where they are at on this adventure. If this project is funded, these families will receive beautiful photos at no cost, and we will have the honor of sharing them with the world. When you contribute, you are making that happen. And from all of us, we thank you.
If we exceed our goal, we will be able to add additional pages, which means additional families will be included in the book.
Meet Matthan: Our son who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy in January.
More than anything, his diagnosis opened our eyes and hearts to a world that we really didn't know much about. It ignited a passion in us, not only to learn about special needs, but to share the inspiring stories that we have continually come across.
We felt inspired to create a project that would celebrate children with special needs for who they are; A project that would educate people on the topic of special needs, and inspire all who come in contact with it.
We want to share the highs and the victories that these families encounter, yet embrace the lows and the trials. We want families who have a child or children with special needs to know that they are not alone. We want to capture beautiful photographs and stories of families with special and beautiful children, and share them with the world. That is our mission for this project.
We are now in the early stages of the project, and have been receiving amazing interest and feedback from families across the country. We have started by doing shoots around Southern California first. If the project is funded, we will continue to get in contact with more and more families across the U.S, then plan a tour route to go visit them and include their stories in our book. Our journey will be documented on our project blog with updates and videos on our www.projectARLT.com site.
Here is an outline of our project schedule:
January - February:
- Mail out t-shirts
- Connect with families
- Plan tour route
- Finish California & South West U.S. photo sessions
- Complete U.S. tour
- Compile photos and stories from all families that are a part of the project
June - July:
- Mail out all books and pledge rewards
The end result of our completed project will be a beautiful coffee table book entitled "A Road Less Traveled: A Collection Of Stories." We are offering this book in both soft and hardcover options. Both options will be 8.25" x 11" landscape layout, full of beautiful images and stories. The softcover version is our budget-friendly edition - great for taking on the go, sharing with friends, or setting out in a social environment. Our hardcover version includes premium fabric binding and a beautiful dust jacket. It's perfect for displaying in your home, sharing with friends and family, and is sure to last generations.
The hard work we will be putting into our pledge products is our way of saying thank you for believing in this cause and joining the movement. We're very pleased to say that our books (and postcards!) will be ordered through Artifact Uprising - a great printing company that delivers truly beautiful products. We also created some awesome project t-shirt designs, which will be printed on American Apparel unisex tees, available in S, M, and L sizes. See below for product examples:
Behind Sons & Daughters Photography:
We are AlisaMarie and Steve Hanks - the creative force / husband-wife duo behind Sons & Daughters Photography. From high school sweethearts to 18 year old parents to business owners, we tend to dance to the beat of our own drum. We enjoy being different. We want to raise our kids with the foundation that if you love people, work hard, and pursue your passion, you will have lived a meaningful life.
Risks and challenges
The only challenge we face for this project is funding. We chose the minimum funding goal needed to complete this project at the level of quality we feel it deserves. Printing good quality photo books is expensive, but we feel the end result will be worth it. The level of interest and positive feedback we have seen in these early stages of the project has been amazing. We want this project to exist, and we believe that it can really be something beautiful.
Crossing the country, sleeping in a travel trailer with a family of four and dog can be challenging at times, but this isn't our first photography tour. We are confident in our creative abilities, work ethic, and dedication to this project. With your support, we will create something beautiful and inspiring.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
