"Era of Tribes" is an asymmetric worker-placement strategy
game in the vein of Civilization for 1-4 players (Age 14+) where your goal is to discover, expand, develop and interact with your fellow players in Europe from the Neolithic period to the High Middle Ages. You have ten unique tribes to choose from, each with special benefits and drawbacks, different starting conditions, several ways to end the game, a real civ-feeling and all this within a playtime of around 30 minutes per player.
You develop your tribe by placing leaders on your personal Tribal Action Board where you choose 1 of 7 different actions in each turn. This guarantees quickly executable contextual actions and a short downtime.
A playable version is available for free on Tabletop Simulator.

This is the standard version and contains everything you need for the full game experience.
- King's Edition (66,- €)
This version has the same contents as the Chieftain Edition, but also contains the 5/6-player expansion in pink and green. Already unlocked.

The Game will be produced by Gameland in China; a company which - among others - produced Too many Bones and Raiders of the North Sea, so quality will be great for sure. Austrian Boardgamer thankfully allowed us to link his video in German and English. This will allow you to get an idea of the nice quality you will be able to anticipate.
This video will give you an idea of what the components will look like in reality. Component quality will be at this level or even better. But that´s up to you ;-).
The above Stretch Goals will be unlocked as soon as we reach the sum indicated on each. But there are more Stretch Goals ahead of us and we will soon reveal more of them!
The goals are already reduced by 5000,- € each, because of the funded 24 hours goal:

A short history of Era of Tribes
Arne - the designer of "Era of Tribes" was born in 1975 and grew up with all the great boardgames and RPG's of the 80's and 90's and he loved playing Civilization-like games for years but - as has happened to many of us - it became more and more difficult to find the time - and the people - for one of those big and everlasting games. So he started working on "Era of Tribes" years ago, improved it again and again, got rid of elements that dragged the game down and finally he was able to present to his friends a Civ-game that allowed them to rule over their own unique tribes but with game time of only 30 minutes per player for a full game. Little did they know how many hours of playtesting would await them...
And here we are, the game has been tested again and again and is now ready to be released and we hope that already the Kickstarter will be as much fun for you as we had during game development!
The board shows the map, where your vassals explore (and collect luxury goods and food, fight the barbarians and your opponents), the abilities of the barbarians, the influence modifiers, the improvement tree, your morale and more. It is a mounted 23.3 x 33.1 inch richy illustrated foldable board.
There are ten different tribes in "Era of Tribes" and each of them gives you special abilities or - sometimes - drawbacks. The board offers totally asymmetric starting conditions in relation to the abilities and the landscape surrounding your tribe.

For each tribe you will have a "Tribal Action Board" (TAB) which allows you to choose your actions - independently from those your rivals have chosen - and immediately execute them. Every box can be chosen at any time during your turn with one - or more - of your leaders, but each only once during a turn, so choose the order of your actions wisely!
We use many icons to illustrate the actions and game elements on the board. Their meaning becomes very clear after a short time of playing and helps increasing the game flow. Thanks to the icons the game components are mostly language independant.
On the back of each TAB, there will be a "Sequence of a Round" overview in English.
So you can always check what happens next, we provide you with a "Sequence of a Round"-overview where you can also see the "End of Game Conditions".
Overviews in different languages will be some of the future Stretch Goals.
Era of Tribes has a novel combat system. The attacker and the defender each get one die. The novelty is that the dice faces are distributed anew for each combat. During each battle round both players throw “their” combat dice. Then you check which player gets one damage. This can even be a damage on your side and represents fortune, tactical errors, external influences and everything else that makes the outcome of a battle unpredictable. This way you can try to influence the chances of a battle in your favor, but you never can be sure a hundred percent.
“Era of Tribes” has a special Improvement Tree, consisting of six branches.
Your improvement markers stay within their branch and they are moved towards the center when you achieve a new improvement. For each leader placed here you can get one improvement. This gets more expensive the closer to the center the improvement is. The basic costs you can see on the improvement pioneer track. The “discount” for stragglers you will find on the right. Each improvement is based on one of the two branches below it (overlapping improvement fields). If this improvement has not been achieved the costs increase.
There are 11 different influence cards. At the beginning of the game each player chooses one influence card before he decides to choose a tribe that fits in with the card. Each of the influence cards provides you with a special (and secret) task that needs to be fulfilled.
Beside this personal influence card – which can only be fulfilled by its owner – there are also face-up influence cards which can be fulfilled by all players.

Shipping will be charged after the end of the Kickstarter in the Pledge Manager to distribute shipping costs as fair as possible. Keep in mind, if we reach a lot of stretch goals, the costs could raise in some countries due to the weigth of the game.
Who are we?
Arne Lorenz (Game & Graphic Design and Layout)
Born in Hamburg, Germany, he started with a 9 to 5 job that had nothing to do with gaming. But he started playing games early on and right away such great games as "Civilization" and "Shogun". Of course, as many of us he soon also played RPG's: MERS, DSA, D&D and of course "Paranoia!". Countless hours were spent with exploring strange new worlds and challenges were heroically overcome. Many things he learned from those games, though only later he should realize it. Then he reached an age where gaming was delegated to the rear ranks but luckily he never fully quit.
One day, out of the blue, "Settlers of Catan" hit the gaming market and suddenly everything in the world of board games went upside down. Even those who only knew "Kniffel", "Rumikub" and "Schattenhalma" developed a new interest in board games. And it was from this time on that Arne developed a habit of changing and expanding existing games (the original Catan was of course much too small for him!). Soon after he began developing his own games. But those games were only played within a small circle of friends since - from today's point of view - they were rather lacking in game design . What remains is the RPG "Annor - Das Schwert von Esper", which was the result of a project week at school. It is still alive today and one of his friends is still improving it and developing new adventures for it .
"Era of Tribes"is his first "real" board game and the result of close to a decade of refining the basic idea of creating a better Civ-game.
Gameland (Logistics and Production)
The Chinese company Gameland has quite a track record in the gaming industry and has worked on - among others - Too many Bones and Raiders of the North Sea, two games of high component quality. Their clients not only include traditional gaming companies but also big players like Amazon and El Corte Ingles.
Marc Exner (Tribal Art)
Marc has studied Graphic Design and created the tribal art for "Era of Tribes".
Radosław Jaszczuk (Cover)
Radosław Jaszczuk is a DTP designer from Pland and also illustrates board games, RPGs and books. He was born in 1980 and grew up during the Golden Age of video games. So, with the current Golden Age of Board games he was more than happy to join it and has already worked for such publishing houses as Sinonis, Fabryka Gier Historycznych, The Farm 51, Kuźnia gier, Fajne RPG, Infinite Dreams, Gramel and Fundacja TRACH. He is very interested in everything he gets his hands on but - above all - he loves games. He does his utmost to illustrate them as best as possible and to solve all problems with their layout or gameplay. And he is constantly looking for new methods and challenges.
Jakub Mrówczyński (3D Artist)
Jakub comes from Poland and currently works in Sweden as a 3D Artist for a game studio. In his free time he loves to spend his money on Kickstarter, riding a bike, playing RPGs and - of course - playing board games. He is eager to take on new challenges and he is very excited to be a part of Era of Tribes.
Karsten Schulmann (Pledge Manager)
Karsten Schulmann has been an avid gamer since childhood, playing everything from video to roleplaying and board games over the course of the last three decades. He loves the immersion that games can achieve. For him, the perfect board game is a blend of easy to learn (but hard to master) mechanics and a captivating theme. Apart from that he is helping other designers with videos, graphic design and translations from English to German (for example Arkham Horror LCG, Champions of Midgard or Human Punishment).
André Winter (Translation & Editing)
André plays games since the early 1980’s and somewhere along the way he discovered that he also loves toying with words and creating games. Hence he became a translator/editor and game designer. After more than 16 years as a freelancer in the gaming industry he has worked for many companies, Fantasy Flight Games, Rackham, Corvus Belli and many others among them. He favors short and elegant rules that still allow for many options, so Era of Tribes early on caught his attention.

Risks and challenges
After campaign ends, you will be able to vary your pledges or add ons in the pledge manager. Also shipping will be calculated and quoted then. Production will start in June and last for at least 2 months. So shipping will start in August/September. We will work for shipping with fulfillment centers, where it is possible and useful to keep shipping costs down.
Everything is almost ready for production and I will send all the stuff to you this year! ...hopefully before Essen Spiel, if everything in the production works well. As you are know, we are all just men and women, so things can happen, but we will not need a year or something like this for sure!!
