The Wii U Stretch!

Hey everyone—

As you may have heard, Nintendo recently contacted us to discuss the possibility of releasing Armikrog on the Wii U. Our first thought was “I wonder if anyone would want to play Armikrog on the Wii U?” Well…we think YES!!!

In order to make this happen, we’re announcing our first stretch goal of $950,000.

But wait…why are we announcing a stretch goal when we haven’t hit our initial funding goal yet? Great question! Making a Wii U version of Armikrog was not part of our original budget, but so many people have been asking for it that we feel compelled to respond. Achieving this $950,000 stretch goal will cover the additional costs of developing Armikrog on the Wii U--which will be available for download through the Nintendo eShop.

So, once the stretch goal is unlocked, what do I have to do to get a Wii U version? If you’ve already pledged to a tier (or add-on) that includes a digital download of the game…then you don’t have to do anything! The Wii U version will become an additional option next to the PC, Mac and Linux versions (which you will specify in the survey you receive after the campaign has ended). Of course, if you haven’t pledged yet—go do it now! Note: the Wii U version is a digital download only and not available as part of any physical boxed versions.

We’re really excited about this first stretch goal! Nintendo is too—they’ve even fast-tracked us so we’re now an official licensed Wii U developer! And while we’re still in the early stages of design, we’ve already been kicking around some ideas of how Armikrog might work on the Wii U. Check out the images below to see some early concepts!

But wait…there’s more!!!

Ever wonder how Tommynaut and Beak-Beak became friends? If we meet this first stretch goal, we will also create an exclusive animated short that tells the hilarious story of how Tommynaut and Beak-Beak first met. This short will be available to every backer as a digital download. How cool is that?!?

      If you're doing a WiiU version, don't make the same mistake as the developers of The Cave did. They obviously threw that game out in a rush which actually isn't the problem, so I don't even care about the bad fps and so on of that game. BUT it's not even playable on the Gamepad, which is somehow a really big deal for WiiU gamers, as long as a WiiU game isn't completely tailored to use the gamepad and the TV Screen like the 3DS does. So Gameports are usually totally expected to also work on the Gamepad screen only. If your gamepad-specific features are so damn cool, you don't wanna hide them for the sake of the ability to play it off-TV, then I guess I'm cool with that too. But taking a bath and being able to play your game on the WiiU gamepad would be plain awesome, so you may consider implementing that feature (including the bath tub, of course).

      @Antonion: Thanks for the reply and the clarification. I pledged enough that I should qualify for the physical collector's edition ($200), but it'd be awesome to be able to get the Wii U version of the game instead of the PC one. If worst comes to worse, I do own a Mac, but I really like what you guys have in-store for the Wii U GamePad if the stretch goal is met!

      @David: The Wii U release is a digital only endeavor. In the Collector's Edition, you'll get a DVD with the PC game, as well as a DVD of the "Behind the Scenes" videos AND a physical CD with the soundtrack. Getting a DIGITAL Wii U copy instead of a DIGITAL PC copy for said tier COULD be possible, but we need Pencil Test to confirm this as 100%.

      So I saw the note that the Wii U version won't be part of any physical collector's edition... Does that basically just mean the collector's edition won't have the DVD with it? I'd very much still like all of the other goodies! :)

      @Peter: The Wii U has sold 3.5 million consoles. The PS4 has sold Zero. Lets talk again in March 2014 and see how each console is doing.

      Already getting the game (and now another copy for a friend for the final push!) BUT would DEFINITELY buy ANOTHER if you made this version. On the PS4 (with Vita functionality to be used like the Wii U controller)!! PSN download of Skullmonkeys too maybe? ;)

      Woah, this is great news, and it means I'm upping my pledge to get it one step close to happening.

      I enjoyed playing adventure games on the Wii very much, and I'm looking forward to more of them being on Wii U. :D

      I doubt we'll hit the stretch goal, but I'm hopeful you'll cover your last 250k at the last minute thanks to Kickstarter's weird curve. So, after the Kickstarter succeeds (I won't even consider failure!), could you perhaps run some more crowd-sourcing via the Pencil Test Website or something. Just to cover the Wii U goal?

      Dogbutt camera mode may be the best use that I've seen for the Wii U's controller to date (maybe ever).
      With that said, I gladly increase my pledge.

      Would prefer to see it on the PS4. The Wii U is dead and will never hold a substantial market share in the console market.

      Well I just upped my pledge. And it has nothing to do with the Wii U port although that does sound like it'll be great. I don't own a Wii and it'll be a long time before I probably do. I'm just hoping it funds. I love clay stop motion animation and I'm loving the music. I had never heard of Neverhood or Tennapel or Terry or any of you guys until I found this on KS. Now I'm scouring the interwebs for an affordable copy of the Neverhood soundtrack. I think I found it. :)

      @TenNapel - That be awesome if they did! Though maybe they could make a few other accounts to go for the 4,500 tier as well so we can see likenesses of them in the game. Finding Reggie, Iwata and Miyamoto statues in the game would just be great!

      @Amos bordowitz... yesterday we got 15k on a Saturday with 252 new donors. Nobody could see that we would break our record on a slow day like Saturday. Even slower are Sundays... and with 5 hours left in the day we just beat yesterday's record and have 338 donors and counting. NOBODY would predict that looking at our previous trajectory.

      Now go to this wiki that lists all games crowdfunding on Kickstarter:

      For starters, MOST games do fund. It's a much higher percentage than many other popular categories, like say, movies. Nearly ALL of the game campaigns that made it over the 50% mark successfully funded.

      We're counting on the Kickstarter reciprocal curve where the last few days match the explosion of the first few days. Nearly all of the game projects that got close can be searched on Kickstarter and you can read the updates... about 5 days from the end, you'll find a few donors saying the old, "We can't make it." That's human nature because we don't know the future that we mitigate disappointment by lowering expectations. But Kickstarter is a bad place to do that, because the surge on nearly all of the funded projects comes just in the nick of time at the end. Here's a few examples:

      I'm not a wishful thinker so I'm not resting on voodoo or optimism to say that this project has a likelihood of funding. The underlying principles are there. You folks are our underlying principle! We'll be breaking another record tomorrow, no problem.

      The answer is still that we need you to help bring in backers. The sleepy weekend is nearly over. Tomorrow is the big taco. What's really great is that this weekend has been an explosion of exposure for the project, and the more people that hear about us the more they donate but MONDAY is when people really start doing their online business, including donating to Kickstarter. Send a tweet or an email to 5 or 10 of your friends and let the pitch video do its work!

      Exactly! Publishers who want BIG-MONEY safe bets by holding back decent games for the platform think they are protecting themselves but in actual fact they're helping the indies - which is where most started back in the eighties in the home computer sector.

      I scour Kickstarter looking for Wii U possibilities such as this project. If I can afford to throw a few dollars at a project to help bring it to the platform, then sod EA et al, I will!

      Antonio & darkVOID42; it's possible that the stretch goal budgeting includes bringing a Wii U developer on contract to not push the release timeline back.

      Everyone: The day isn't even half finished, at least in the United States where Kickstarter itself is located, and we've gathered better than half of yesterday's funding and new backers, already! And on a weekend, no less. Today will be a good day for funding, no doubt about it!

      @Amitay: Anyone can develope for Wii U... Once they're approved for it. That means buying a developers kit and Nintendo trusting you to deliver on the concept presentes during your pitch.

      What's in it for Nintendo? A cut from all sales from a game (licensing costs) and having one more game for their console n

      I just looked at our Kicktraq numbers (it's a terrible site for predictions but great for looking at daily facts about the campaign) and I checked the daily tab... yesterday brought in 252 donors which is a record funding day for the last two weeks. Consistently, Saturday's are our slowest day yet yesterday was a top draw. We're on track today to do the same or better than yesterday... and that's on a Sunday which is also supposed to be one of the slowest days. Now it's hard to tell if we're starting the end-of-the-project bell curve back up, but I suspect that tomorrow is going to be a huge uptick.

      We're still building our donor base, and you're all doing great work appealing to friends and fans to continue to donate. With every tweet and post (which costs you nothing) we see new donors show up and give! What we need more than ever is for all 13,000 donors to post this campaign on their Facebook, put it up on Twitter and email the link to your friends and family. That ONLY brings in more donors! Thank you to the Armikrog Army for your great work so far!

      Surely, The Neverhood was photographed in higher resolution than 640x480... a "higher-res re-release" addon would be one hell of an incentive to kick in more $$$ toward Amikrog, if it was doable.

      @everyone, Nintendo putting money into a Kickstarter campaign is impossible. We can't make up the difference by relying on a publisher... it completely defeats the purpose of crowd funding anyways. Our trust has always been placed in the game players, not the publishers. We only want to go to the publishers as a last resort, our first resort is to go to the fans, and we still don't think that plan is a mistake.

      This project can 100% fund JUST WITH THE DONORS WE ALREADY HAVE. Look to the person on your right and on your left and don't doubt them. When I hear fear about us not funding it's a natural fear to wonder if your fellow Kickstarter is going to come through, but your fellow Kickstarter has already demonstrated the proof that you need to have confidence in them.

      Stay strong, and don't accuse the project of failing before it fails. We're building an army, and army of 13,000 people! That gives me more confidence than any funding deficit we happen to face. You'll see. You'll see.

      Am I the only one who burst into laughter when I saw the image of Tommynaut looking into Beak-Beak's asshole? Oh for gods sake Doug, do not chicken out of this awesome idea, I would be sad if this feature won't end in the final game.
