The Newtown Creek Armada is a public art installation, creating a boat pond on one of the USA's most polluted bodies of water.
***THE ARMADA has reached its initial Kickstarter goal! Any additional funds we raise will allow us to expand the project and bring it to a larger audience! Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far.***
The Newtown Creek Armada is an artist-created model boat pond that will be installed on the Newtown Creek in September 2012. Located on the border between Brooklyn and Queens, the Newtown Creek is one of America's most polluted waterways and a recently designated federal Superfund Site. Visitors to the Newtown Creek Armada will be invited to pilot a fleet of miniature, radio-controlled boats along the creek’s surface while at the same time documenting the hidden world beneath its waters.
Each boat in The Newtown Creek Armada will represent a different aspect of the creek’s unusual past, present and future, and will be equipped with a waterproof camera, allowing participants to record a unique voyage along the creek. Video from these explorations will be on view at the boat pond, giving visitors a chance to virtually immerse themselves its toxic waters, home to the largest urban oil spill in the United States.
To launch The Newtown Creek Armada, we need your help! Our growing fleet of boats will be using cutting edge technology to document the creek, including wireless streaming, remote control systems, and miniature waterproof cameras. Your support will help us obtain the technology we need to creatively engage this lost waterfront, which is still largely off limits to the public.
Without your support on Kickstarter, we won't be able to outfit our boats with cameras to document the creek's pollution. And if we can double our Kickstarter goal, we will be able to set up video portals showing other parts of the creek at the boat pond site. Any additional funds we raise will support the public exhibition of the videos and other materials we are gathering through The Armada, bringing the project to an even greater audience.
The Newtown Creek Armada is a collaboration between three artists - Laura Chipley, Nathan Kensinger, and Sarah Nelson Wright - whose individual work creatively investigates industry, ecology, and change in urban spaces. The project is part of the North Brooklyn Public Arts Coalition (nbART), and is working with many community groups in Brooklyn, including the North Brooklyn Boat Club, the Newtown Creek Alliance, FEAST Brooklyn, IOBY and the Brooklyn Arts Council.
