"There is snow on the ground, And the valleys are cold, And a midnight profound Blackly squats o'er the wold; But a light on the hilltops half-seen hints of feastings un-hallowed and old." ~ H. P. Lovecraft, "Yule Horror"
We're making Cthulhu Holiday Ornaments for your Cthulhumas tree! This is a very simple campaign, with one goal: to put a set of 4 snazzy mirrored Cthulhu ornaments on your Yuletide tree, wreath, or mantle. That's it! BTW If you want more Lovecraftian gift items, including T-shirts, Lovecraftian Yule cards, & more, we have tons of stuff at ArkhamBazaar.com.
IMPORTANT SHIPPING TIMEFRAME UPDATE
Please be aware that due to unexpected (and wonderful) demand, rewards pledged from this point on, may not be mailed in time for delivery by Dec 24th in the USA. Please see Update #2 for full details and what to expect. These ornaments are being made in our very own workshop, and there are limits to how many we can physically produce in time to get them in the mail for Christmas delivery. We'll continue to produce and mail continuously until all rewards are fulfilled, so you might get lucky, but wanted to be up front about the potential for post-holiday delivery. These are still limited edition ornaments that won't be for sale later, so if you like them, we hope you will still pledge, even if you might not get them this month.
NEW! King in Yellow Ornament add-on
Thanks, backers! One King in Yellow Ornament is included in all "double set" levels (levels $80 & above), or you can add it to any ornament level ($12 & above) by adding $15 to your pledge. Scroll down for photo and more details.
There are four different Cthulhu ornament designs each in a different color, each hand-strung on a silver-colored fabric ribbon. Ornaments are 3" tall and/or wide (depending on the design). You can pledge for any single ornament by choosing the Reward Level that corresponds to the color/design you want. There are also levels that include two ornaments, but the best deals are for one set or two full sets (one for yourself and a set for a friend)!
Each design was created by Brian Callahan, and are already available as T-shirts, among other things. With your help, these will now be the snazziest Cthulhu holiday ornaments ever made.
My mother (rest her soul) had a very specific look in mind for her Xmas tree, and would only use silver ornaments. That's why we're offering the special FESTIVAL IN SILVER and ORNAMENTS OF GOLD levels. This means you'll get all four of the main Cthulhu designs, but instead of their original colors (as shown above), we'll make them ALL in either silver or gold.
NEW King in Yellow ornament Add-on
Since we have exceeded our $6,000 stretch goal, we're making a brand new ornament for those of you of the Carcosian faith. That's right, put your hands together for the one, the only, living god of Carcosa, the King in Yellow! This ornament features the King in his pallid mask holding the madness inducing tome, with the two towers of Carcosa behind him, a strange symbol above his head, and a single over-arching wing.
We will include one with all double sets (levels $80 and above will receive a total of 9 ornaments). Everyone else at Levels $12 and above can add it on for $15 (no additional shipping costs.) We will do what we can to mail them with your original reward, but may need to ship these separately.
Stretch Goal: Achieved! Velvety goodness.
Since we reached (and then quickly passed) our $4,000 stretch goal, we will package each single, double, or full set of ornaments in a fancy velvet pouch. That means those of you who got two full sets of ornaments will receive them in two sweet pouches.
What are the ornaments made from and how are they made?
Each ornament is colored and mirrored cast acrylic with a matte back, etched and cut with our very own laser. They're not made by a factory in another country. We sit in our workshop and make these kits one by one, ensuring a high level of quality for each one. It's time consuming, but it's how we work, and we like getting our hands dirty.
Kickstarter has helped us reach a larger audience than we thought possible to support the yearly H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival® in Portland, OR, so we finally decided to try it for our on-line shop, Arkham Bazaar. If we reach our goal, we'll have the funds to get all the materials we need and go straight into production on these ornaments. Without Kickstarter, we could only afford to make a few sets, but we want to put these ornaments in the hands of as many Cthulhu and Lovecraft fans that want them, so we're setting our sights higher.
Who are you, and have you done this before?
We're the folks behind the (successful) 2013, 2014, and the latest "Trip To R'lyeh" 2015 H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival® & CthulhuCon Kickstarter! Those were all HUGE projects, with tons of rewards, all focused on funding the annual festival. We also run Arkham Bazaar, an on-line shop devoted to Lovecraftian Novelties and Other Weird Oddities. We carry items from various independent artisans, but we also make a lot of cool Cthulhu stuff on our own, from T-shirts to specialty books and more, and most years we create some very limited edition holiday ornaments for our customers.
Now that we have some experience with BIG Kickstarter campaigns, we wanted to see if a very small, very short, very simple campaign could work, and if it could help us reach out to more Cthulhu fanatics across the globe. If so, we have plans for several more campaigns for various original products over the course of next year.
This Kickstarter profile is new, because we need to keep HPLFF event business separate from Arkham Bazaar business, but we're the same creators, Brian and Gwen Callahan. Over the last 3 years, we've gotten pretty good at producing and fulfilling rewards. You can definitely trust us with your pledge.
That rad song in the video!
While we created the designs, and are fabricating the ornaments themselves in our workshop, no one is an island, and we all depend on others. We think our campaign video is neato, and the reason it's so cool is because of the kindness of the guys at the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society who allowed us to use their song "Awake Ye Scary Great Olde Ones." Besides being the makers of the films, "The Call of Cthulhu" and "The Whisperer in Darkness", they also have two CDs of Christmas Carols with a Lovecraftian twist. Get the first one here.
Risks and challenges
We've already made a few prototypes, so we don't expect any problems. However, machines (contrary to popular belief) aren't perfect, so problems with our laser could cause delays in production. Also, if the campaign is very successful, we could get overwhelmed with orders. We make these ourselves, and can make quite a few sets in a predictable amount of time, but there is a limit to how many we can make in a day, so a hugely successful Kickstarter could mean that we can't fulfill all orders in time for the holidays.
If that happens, we'll fulfill the orders in the order of backer surveys received, so the first people who fill out and submit the end-of-campaign surveys will get theirs first.
Also, we'll start producing full sets as soon as we're certain of reaching our funding goal, to get a jump on production (if we know we're going to fund, we can start obtaining some supplies and get started, before the campaign is fully over). Doing that, we'll be able to ship some sets immediately at the end of the campaign.
While we are hoping and prepared to ship all rewards so that they arrive before Dec. 25, if something like this goes wrong, we can't 100% guarantee that you'll receive your ornaments by a specific date. In a worst case disaster scenario of either machine malfunction or an overwhelming number of orders (or both), some sets might arrive after Dec. 25... but, one way or another you'll get what you pledged for, and that will be a very special, limited edition, non-mass produced set of holiday ornaments, made right here in Portland, OR by a husband and wife team who love this stuff!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
