What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Learn the fundamentals of computation with the S1-AU Mk1

ARITH-MATIC is a British computational hardware project and micro startup. We're developing a range of beautifully crafted DIY hardware kits which dissect the complex mechanisms of computation.  

We’re proud to be launching our flagship kit - the S1-AU Mk1 - a humble 4-bit arithmetic unit designed with 7400 series integrated circuits.

Created for pragmatic computing enthusiasts, hobbyists and makers, the S1-AU Mk1 dissects the arithmetic operations performed at the heart of computational machines.

What is an arithmetic unit? 

An arithmetic unit enables computers to perform binary arithmetic. It is one of the most important parts of a CPU (Central Processing Unit). An arithmetic unit which also performs bitwise logical operations is commonly referred to as an ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit). 

What does the S1-AU Mk1 do?

The S1-AU Mk1 is a beautifully crafted DIY hardware kit designed with 7400 series logic chips. It enables you to build a simple 4-bit arithmetic unit and manually perform binary operations. The video below shows an operator performing accumulation:

Using 74HC173 registers for temporary data storage, a 74HC283 full adder for binary calculations, and a 74HC85 comparator for logical comparisons, the assembled board enables an operator to perform 4-bit addition, subtraction, accumulation and comparison.

Input into the unit is performed manually through an array of push button switches and binary operations can be traced through a series of on-board ultra bright LEDs. 

The S1-AU Mk1 is powered via a USB mini cable, however it is not programmable - it requires manual operation through on-board switches. The USB cable is only used to deliver power to the unit, so you don't need to rely on batteries. 

What does the kit contain?

The kit contains all the through-hole components you’ll need to build your own 4-bit arithmetic unit and includes:

  • S1-AU Mk1 Mainboard PCB
  • Backplate PCB  (with screws and nuts for mounting)
  • Electronic Components Kit  
  • USB Mini Cable (for power only)
  • Operator's Technical Manual (downloadable online .pdf / english only)

The kit is supplied with our 'Operator's Technical Manual' (as a downloadable .pdf) which describes in detail what the arithmetic unit is and how ALUs are used more generally in computational architecture. The manual also explains how to fully construct and operate the S1-AU Mk1 and gives a primer on binary operations (addition, subtraction & twos complement) for those who may not be familiar with binary arithmetic. Our mainboard PCB has been carefully crafted to complement the manual and aid construction. 

The S1-AU Mk1 is recommended for ages 16+. Some soldering experience is required to construct the kit.

Project Genesis and Current Status

The S1-AU Mk1 started life as a humble kitchen table project in late 2016 - after an inspired trip to the Museum of Computing in Swindon, England - by ARITH-MATIC's founder, Richard (a maker, creative technologist and computing enthusiast).

After hours of late night tinkering the project "took on a life of its own" and slowly emerged into a set of DIY hardware kits, including the S1-AU Mk1. You can find out more about this journey in the ARITH-MATIC note: 'The Maker Spirit: From Kitchen Table to Micro Startup'.

Following some early feedback from users the board evolved through a series of PCB prototypes.

And, since the development stage of the project we have been able to provide the kit to beta-testers to further iron out any small niggles and problems. Now, we are happy we have a robust and rather beautiful design!

ARITH-MATIC's next challenge is to produce the very first run of kits for public release! And this is where we need your support! 

In preparation, we've already built an excellent relationship with a trusted UK PCB manufacturer, component suppliers and packaging specialists. We're also undertaking the necessary steps towards CE marking so that the kits can be sold in the UK / Europe under relevant legislation.

With your support we will be able to purchase the required components at an acceptable scale of economy, cover tooling, any consultancy and small business costs, and help to continue the ARITH-MATIC story!

Risks and challenges

To launch the S1-AU Mk1 we've tried to reduce and manage the project risks as much as possible and are confident that we've taken a sensible and measured approach. But, unexpected challenges are always enviable when producing hardware products - so we cannot guarantee there won't be delays in the product plan.

However:

As part of the the project development, extensive prototyping as been undertaken to make sure the PCB design is robust and of high quality, ready for release.

We are already working with a great UK manufacturer who have been supporting us through the development process, so we know they are reliable and produce great boards!

We have identified and already work with UK component suppliers - so are able to source components with minimal risk. Components which are more difficult to source have been identified, with appropriate alternatives having already been targeted.

The biggest risk in terms of components is procuring nearly 5000 ultra-bright LEDs. As such, these components were sourced before this Kickstarter to make sure there are no hold ups caused by long manufacturer lead times.

As each kit will need to be individually packaged with a non-trivial set of components we are limiting the Kickstarter to a manageable number of units, to further reduce risk. And, having already shipped beta-kits to a discerning group of testers, we are confident we have ironed out a range of little niggles before they became production problems.

If any issues do arise which delay shipping we will notify all backers immediately and will work to solve the issue as quickly as possible.
