Dance-theater is perhaps humanity’s oldest medium for telling the epic stories of our ancestors.  Prehistoric Body Theater takes that tradition one step further, by teaming up with leading paleontologists to bring us the ultimate epic - a 500+ million year long evolutionary odyssey of sex, violence, extinction, and survival, expressed with the raw reality of the human body in motion.  And now, for the first time, Prehistoric Body Theater will be bringing this groundbreaking dance experience to the screen, through an innovative video and photography project directed by Ari Rudenko, in collaboration with an ensemble of top Indonesian contemporary dancers - based on the feature production GHOSTS of HELL CREEK.

GHOSTS of HELL CREEK tells the tale of the final days of Acheroraptor - the last of the magnificently feathered, hyper carnivorous raptor dinosaurs, during the apocalyptic mass extinction in the wake of the asteroid which hit the earth 66 million years ago. GHOSTS of HELL CREEK then tells the tale of a curious creature named Purgatorius, the first known primate - our most ancient ancestor who miraculously survived the mass extinction.

Prehistoric Body Theater is collaborating with the Burke Museum in Seattle to create this project, with oversight from leading paleontologists Dr. Greg Wilson (Burke Museum) and Dr. Dave Evans (Royal Ontario Museum).  These paleontologists specialize in the final extinction of the dinosaurs, and the evolutionary changes that transpired after the asteroid impact.

Prehistoric Body Theater artistic director Ari Rudenko, who is originally from Seattle, USA, has been based in Indonesia since 2012. The unique prehistoric animal dance movements used in this video and the stage productions are based on techniques drawn from Indonesian dance. Because this prehistoric story is all of our story, Ari believes that by working with Indonesian dancers, this project can inspire a groundbreaking global bridge between cultures and traditions.

This film will be both an incredible artistic work on its own right, and will also be a building block towards bringing the stage production of GHOSTS of HELL CREEK on tour to the US in 2019, with the ensemble of Indonesian dancers.

As a special thank you for supporting this Kickstarter, you will receive a link to an exclusive donor-only version of the video with behind the scenes footage and materials from the film and photography project.

These Prehistoric Body Theater first edition giclée prints await backers who pledge $300 or more!  If you have pledged $300 or more, select the appropriate award option and send a message to me with your top 3 choices (BB 1-3 and CMZ 1-3).

Risks and challenges

$4,000 is a frugal budget to complete this phase of the project. Based on over four years of experience creating performance in Indonesia, I know I will be able to scout dancers, lead rehearsals, and create the video project on this budget, because Indonesia has an exchange rate which is favorable for Americans.

However, I highly encourage you to donate generously, for if we pass the $4,000 goal, more funds can be put towards the creation of the video project, and the participating artists can be paid more generously for their talented contributions to this initial creation phase.

The participating dancers will be negotiating complex schedules with commitments to other projects, and may not live near the rehearsal and videoshoot location. I will be organizing the video and photo shoot in Surakarta, Central Java - the home of the Art Institute of Indonesia campus with the best dance program in Indonesia. This location is a central hub of the Indonesian art world, and dancers can easily travel from other areas to Solo. There are also plenty of qualified and interested dancers already in Solo who are ready to take my workshops and participate in the film project.

This performance is potentially challenging to Indonesian cultural norms both concerning spiritual philosophies about the origin of life and around the presentation of the near nude body. I will be dialoging and interviewing the dancers and cultural leaders in Indonesia on the nature of the performance, and eliciting their thoughts and responses in a respectful manner.

I will be taking ample video documentation of my process working with Indonesian artists. I will be compiling a "behind the scenes" documentary, which will help shape a final product, even if there are complications to the final video/photo shoot aspect of the project.
