About this project
Hello and welcome to the TZArtisan Project!
You may have heard of us through bookmarks or posters that were handed out in your city, or you may possibly know the ladies in the TZArtisan team. TZArtisan is comprised of 9 devout artisans dedicated to creating fabric-made, floral accessories, known as tsumami kanzashi, living all over the world: US, UK, Poland, Japan, and Indonesia. We use an original Japanese technique that was used to create ornate accessories for upper-class women, artisans, and royalty as a symbol of beauty back in the Edo period over 300 years ago! In Japanese, this technique is known as tsumami zaiku, hence our team name, T(sumami)Z(aiku)Artisan. Today, these accessories are worn by girls of all ages in coming-of-age ceremonies, graduations, weddings, and more!
Books available in English currently share a limited concept of the expansive world that is tsumami kanzashi! Upon speaking with others interested in the craft, we learned that people wanted to learn more techniques using the traditional methods, but with modern applications for present day folks! TZArtisan has spent the last few months working on the concept of a tutorial book and we are now ready to bring it to life! But printing a 200 page book in color costs more than just artistry, and we NEED YOUR HELP.
Here’s how it works: Kickstarter allows you to support us financially and we have all kinds of great things planned for you in return for your generosity! They’re listed on the right side of this page and you can read the description below for more details on how to support this campaign!
We would LOVE to make this project a reality, and to make the world a prettier place by spreading these beautiful flowers to everyone, and we hope you will join us!
Please use #tzartisan and share this project with your friends! ARIGATOU GOZAIIMASU! Thanks!
Listed below are some of the cool rewards we have for you!
If you’d like more information, please read further to learn more about the project itself if you’re interested (e.g. the history, what sets THIS PROJECT apart from other books, and our reasons for launching on Kickstarter). You can also check out our website at www.tzartisan.com.
What IS Tsumami Zaiku?
Tsumami Zaiku, (つまみ細工), translated as the pinching craft, is a technique that teaches you to 'pinch' and fold a square piece of fabric into a 'petal-esque' form. Please note that the term petal is loosely used. TZ is used to create tsumami kanzashi (literally translated as hairpin) that resemble flowers, leaves, dewdrops, animals, and so much more! The possibilities of this craft are endless, really only limited by your imagination.
How is TZArtisan’s Book Going to Be Different from Other Books on “Kanzashi”?
We are the first to write an instructional book about Tsumami Zaiku in ENGLISH.
Secondly, it’s a collaborative effort between deviantArt's arielyiningloh, hanatsukuri, Arleen, haru-mai, EruwaedhielElleth, SincerelyLove, LilyAshes-Emporium, and rinei. We’ve come together to form TZArtisan and each of us has 5+ years of experience in working with the technique!
Last, and certainly not least, we anticipate 40+ tutorials, 20+ pages dedicated to an inspirational model gallery to showcase different ways to wear and pair tsumami kanzashi, and many more on the way! We have yet to finalize this, but will be releasing details to backers as they come.
Tsumami Zaiku: An Artisan's Guide to Modern Day Kanzashi will show you how to express yourself with the techniques that will be available in the book! It will be a 200 page paperback, produced in color, and complete with how-to tutorials, step-by-step photos, and even a gallery of models to show you ways to incorporate these beautifully versatile accessories into your daily fashion! We want to teach and inspire our readers, presenting methods by which existing tsumami zaiku users analyze flowers to come up with their own unique takes on them and translate the designs into tsumami kanzashi.
The What, When, and Where
What: The book is obviously the main thing that needs to be produced, and we’d like to have a minimum of 300 books printed, resulting in a total of $6000. The book will be 8 x 10, 200 pages long, in color, perfectly bound (glued/sewn) together to make it just as good as other craft tutorial books, and soft cover. We plan to have a better quality paper with a slight gloss so that our color photos (very important) will be more pleasant to the eye with their vibrant hues and intricate details.
When: As the funding itself will be closed March 3rd, we want to allow a decent amount of time for everyone to reply the backer surveys we will be sending out. Realistically, that won’t be for another two months at least. We anticipate sending a massive PDF (200 pages is no small number, folks) to the printing company early/mid-Fall at the latest and should have books IN HAND by sometime in Oct/Nov. YOU can expect to have your products sometime over the winter months as we will be shipping them out in batches. We will do our best to make sure that everything is sent out in an orderly and as efficient of a manner as we can humanly manage.
Where: Your money goes into the following categories:
- book production - rewards production - shipping costs - Kickstarter fees - credit card processing fees - BackerKit fees
We should mention that we have NOT included funds to cover the creative aspects of creating the book in the budget goal for the project (i.e. writing, cover design/layout, interior layout, website design/layout, photography, models, advertising/promotion, etc.), but if successfully funded, any profit made will go FIRST to stretch goals, and remaining funds will be dedicated to cover some of these aforementioned costs. For the time being, the members of TZArtisan are doing their best to absorb what costs (whether money or time spent) they can to make sure that you get the most out of this Kickstarter.
You will find details of our rewards for the different donation tiers listed below. Domestic US shipping prices have already been pre-calculated into the pledge amounts, but due to much higher shipping rates for international backers, we are unable to ship any physical books overseas (outside of the US).
However, once the project is funded, each member of TZArtisan will receive the full PDF to reproduce in their respective countries, so not all hope is lost!
PLUS, if we’re funded, Stretch Goal #5 will allow the ebook version to become available (IF WE REACH IT).
You do NOT have to donate at the exact tier that is described. For example, should you wish to simply receive a bobby pin set (Tier Ayame) but would like to donate more than $7, you’re MORE than welcome (and we would be very grateful for the additional support) to donate more!
How to SELECT Your Reward and Donate to TZArtisan:
1. Read the tier levels in detail and know what you want. (e.g. Ayame level with the pair of bobby pins)
2. Decide how much you’d like to donate. (e.g. $10 USD)
3. Scroll through and look for the relevant reward on the right side. (e.g. Ayame)
4. Select and follow the directions on the screen!

We may request for you to revise your idea if it looks to be too difficult, too time-consuming, or potentially unsuitable to be made using tsumami zaiku. We are more than willing to work with you if you have just a vague idea of what you’d like to learn.
TZArtisan reserves the right to reject any idea for any reason. If you are uncertain as to whether or not your idea will pass, please contact us before pledging!
Any questions about a specific pledge? Shoot us an email at email@example.com.

What Happens When Funding Closes?
As mentioned earlier, the Kickstarter will run from Feb 3rd to March 3rd. If the goal is met, TZArtisan will begin assembling the book itself into a massive, 200 page PDF file and send it in for production as soon as they can. ALL rewards that are strictly digital, with the exception of the ebooks, will be distributed in the next 1-2 months after the project has been funded. Physical rewards, excluding books, will be shipped out sometime around August 2016. eBooks, if funded, will go out when the book has been produced. Physical books will go out sometime around December 2016. Funds acquired over the original budget goal will be put towards stretch goals, and any funding we receive over that will be reinvested back into TZArtisan, whether that means preparing for more content, a book tour, more advertising, or more books printed. Win-Win!
TZArtisan will be constantly updating stretch goals, FAQs as they come in, and posting as many updates as we can to keep you all in the loop as the project goes on. Like the flowers we make with tsumami zaiku, there are lots of pieces that are being made separately that really just need to be glued together by a successful Kickstarter campaign.
If you have questions, please drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Want to see some products that we, TZArtisan, have produced to get an idea of what you can do with this technique? Click through to our gallery on our website: www.tzartisan.com. For now, you can check out each TZArtisan member’s individual websites. In the coming weeks, we will have a Feature gallery on the website for your viewing pleasure.
Before we wrap things up, we’d like to thank you for checking out TZArtisan’s project. It’s because we know you’re out there and interested in an accurate teaching of a Japanese craft that we want to make this book a reality. We love you guys, and look forward to seeing your creations in the future!
Risks and challenges
Most of the TZArtisan members are either working full-time or are currently obtaining Master’s degrees (because despite being tsumami zaiku enthusiasts, we’re just like you), and due to being a team 50% USA based and 50% international, time-differences and events of life may very well delay things getting done.
This is the team’s first book, but we desire to only put out the best. It’s one of the reasons that tsumami zaiku is so appealing to us. It requires time, patience, and a lot of tender love and care. The same goes for the book. Any delays that are unrelated to life events will only be due to our determination to give you nothing but our very best work. Between us, we cover the bases of good quality tsumami zaiku techniques, how to assemble one-of-a-kind pieces, and the know-how to get the book finished and shipped out to all of you.
For some, the design process may require hiring outside help to follow printing specifications. However, due to Ariel’s background in media and digital/graphic design, this will not be a problem for the TZArtisan team. They have already put out 2000 exclusive promotional bookmarks, 50 posters, and all kinds of online ads that were custom-made to suit the project.
A possible concern for some of you may be that Kickstarter projects sometimes get funded and creators seemingly disappear, leaving backers wondering where they went until the product arrives at their doorstep a year or so later. TZArtisans, even before launching on Kickstarter, have made a point to keep all members informed of any changes or delays with the process, with individuals, or for the team as a whole.
TZArtisan will also be using BackerKit, which is specially designed to smooth out the wrinkles in the process and keep you all properly updated as to our progress. It’ll also help TZArtisan to keep track of any address changes and will easily allow YOU, the backer, to customize and add on to your pledges. With their help, we do not foresee any problems regarding fulfillment at this time.
In closing, we ask you to have faith in us: in our passion for tsumami zaiku and the kanzashi that can be made with the technique, in our desire, hope, wish, and dream to see this book become a reality. If we had the funds to do it ourselves, we would, in bulk, and give a copy to everyone who was even remotely interested. But as stated earlier, we can’t do it alone. We need your help.
Have any questions? Please don’t hesitate to contact us! We thank you for your support and for those who may not be able to, your consideration of TZArtisan’s project in the first place! Thank you!
