The Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ) Purimshpiel is a giant annual art extravaganza that celebrates the Jewish carnival holiday of Purim-- a holiday where everything goes topsy turvy as we celebrate how the Jews survived another threat to their existence. We need you to make it happen! We are raising money to rent a space and produce the event (costumes! sets! lights! sound!). We always produce this event on a shoestring, but in the past year, as the recession has deepened and money for art and political work has dried up, our shoestring has frayed.
Our Purimshpiel is a show bringing hope to the masses. The theater is always political, but never didactic. A hybrid event that combines theater, live music, art installations, and community merriment, the party supports work for social justice. Past shows have focused on domestic worker's rights, immigration, and housing justice. The show and party reinvigorate activists and community members. The event fuses Yiddish culture, art, urban justice, queers, and sequins. It has been happening annually since 2002 in New York City.
Your donations will help us cover the necessities we need to make this event happen. This money will go toward our efforts to rent a space; haul cardboard and fabric and stage lights from place to place; pay the musicians and artists; and cover a hundred other costs.
It is a rollicking party--a theatrical explosion--an interactive art installation--a hybrid full of magic and glitter that reaches between 350-400 people every year. Won't you be a part of it?
