Yes. We are running a very lean and frugal project.
One way we keep the costs down is by doing most of the work ourselves. We designed the hardware and wrote all the code ourselves. The only work we farm out is PCB fabrication and PCBA.
Another way we keep costs down is using a semi-custom enclosure. A custom mold can easily cost $50,000. We are designing a zero-configuration timecode generator, not a piece of industrial art. So we have our plastics vendor (New Age Enclosures, check them out!) modify an existing enclosure they already manufacture. The vendor CNC-cuts openings for our 1/8" jack, LED, microphone, etc., to our specifications.
Lastly, our marketing budget is $0. We rely on real people telling their friends about DISH, instead of expensive ad agencies and banner ads. We may be reaching a smaller audience, but every dollar you pledge to DISH goes directly to engineering and manufacturing.
