Subway Readers circa 1943

Hello all!

Thanks again for your donations and attentions.

Just thought I'd give a quick update on Notes from the Underground activities. I am planning on making a pilgrimage to the New York Transit Museum archive to do some research in their photographic collections. While I'm there I also hope to educate myself more about the general history of the NYC Subway and subway culture.

In the mean time I've been in touch with their archivist, who was kind enough to send me an image of three women reading on the subway in 1943. It seems that reading has been a favorite subway pastime across the generations!

This makes me wonder if perhaps the book shouldn't include a photographic timeline of subway reading...Any thoughts?

10 Backers!

I'd just like to send out a hearty 'thank you' to everyone who has pledged a donation so far. It's beyond exciting.

Just a few updates on activities regarding the project:

There might be a second photographer providing material for the book (hurrah!)

I've started to do some subtle pamphleting around the NYC subway, and will also be putting up fliers advertising the project on New York Public Library branch bulletin boards.

The purpose of proselytizing the 'Underground Readers' project is not funding alone--I am eager to have interested parties contribute their opinions and experiences of subway reading! We'll see what stories find their way to the  project...

Thanks again!
