Everyone enjoys inventing and creating...  My goal is to give some tools for helping this process!   I have been developing this kit as a safe and easy method of learning Electronics and programming.  After gaining a little experience in electronics, users will be able to move the projects away from the kit and build them into a stand-alone project.  With this kit you will learn how to read and gather data from input sensors (such as an acceleration sensor, light sensor or temperature sensor), process this data and interact with various other output devices (such as LEDs, Liquid crystal displays and the serial port on your computer).   When these skills are combined, the number of projects and ideas are virtually limited only my ones imagination.

With your help, we can bring these kits into the microprocessor age and inspire inventors and hobbyists!  Help share this learning tool with inventors, hobbyists and educators alike.  This will be a perfect, self-contained tool for individuals, clubs and even a classroom setting for learning and experimenting with electronics and programming.

Why Arduino-based?
There are many microprocessors available on the market, but I feel the best documented and easily accessible for learning is the Arduino environment.  Arduino based processors are being taught at college, high school and even elementary schools as an introduction to electronics and programming.  The Arduino platform has a strong online community of supporters and documentation coupled with easy to understand instructions and numerous projects.  I feel this kit will expose students at a younger age, in a easy and fun project based approach to learning both the basics of electronics and computer programming.

After examining many books on learning Arduino over the past year, I have been most intrigued and impressed with the "30 Arduino Projects for the Evil Genius" by Simon Monk.  I have worked with Mr. Monk as a collaborator over the past year and considered his projects while selecting the parts for this kit.   Due to changes in the second edition of his text and I am modifying this kit to accommodate these changes for the final production run.  If you are new to Arduino or already have some experience, you will appreciate the step-by-step explanations and background information in this published series.  Mr. Monk has provided information and offered advice as a consultant / collaborator on this project.

What can I do with this kit?

Most of my interest with this level electronics is learning how to detect and interact with our environment.  Included are components and modules that will allow for detection and interaction with the environment and others around you.  Included will be Light Emitting Diodes, Relays, a Buzzer, a Wireless Transceiver, Light and sound sensors With the components and documented projects you will be able to build and modify many projects such as...

  • Motion and light detection / alarms
  • Various data recorders
  • Infrared signal decoder and signal repeater
  • LED Color fading/changing devices

As an added bonus all DuinoKit users will receive complete building instructions and code for my personal Binary "Blinky" Clock.  This clock utilizes an IR remote control, 9 different alarms and the Real Time Clock module integrated into the DuinoKit.

Why a kit?
The Arduino is an incredible platform for learning electronics, programming and robotics.  However, with many little parts and additional modules and to buy, it it difficult to use in a group learning environment.  Most parts have to be ordered overseas with a 4 to 6 week waiting period and then get easily lost due to size or the typical "workshop" environment.  The goal of this project is to supply everything needed to quickly and easily construct and build projects without loosing track of parts and components and having to worry about reading their values or specifications.

Project Details...
A production run of the printed circuit board design and a full collection of parts soldered on the board as an Arduino Inventors Kit, this kit will be ready to build and experiment.  The kit will have a case, wires and book for easy start up and well as a online community to share, build and post questions with other enthusiasts and view video demonstrations and instructions for various projects..

With manufacturing quotes from US vendors and builders and would like to use as much US labor and resources to complete this project.  I plan on including several common "break-out" modules that are typically used in both beginner and advanced projects.  The more support on this initial run, the more components we can include in this project.

Below is a fairly solid list of parts for consideration in the KickStarter Release of this project (Version #3)  We have learned a lot in the first two prototypes coupled with testing and watching people build projects. 

I will place a web survey and response system where I can collect data and YOUR opinions of final project components design and even a name for the final project.  Each donor will be invited as an on-line collaborator and the parts list below may be subject to slight changes.

Estimated Production Timeline.

  • During Campaign - Finalization of printed circuit board design and vendor contract for supplied case and book.  Also placing finishing touches and projects and support website to be hosted at DuinoKit.com
  • Two weeks after end of campaign  (End of July) - Funds will be released from KickStarter campaign and the we will start manufacturing and assembly of PCB and part procurement.  This process could take up to 4-6 weeks for all parts and assembly to be completed with our US based manufacturer.  Delivery expected in mid to end of September.  Most parts are "off Shelf" and availability of components is not expected to be a problem.
  • October and November, packaging and shipping of DuinoKit will begin.
  • We have officially added additional time to our production time line just in case this project goes crazy and we need to find another, or a higher volume producer, for this project.  All projects should be shipped in November at the latest.


Stretch Goals.....  Sure, there are some ideas!

We have some stretch goals in mind that will be revealed when we get close to our funding goal.  These may include additional modules, various PCB colors or advanced components.  Your suggestions and comments are welcome.

Risks and challenges

Actively working this past year with engineers and suppliers and finding some good sources. However, there are always unforeseen expenses or delays in the fabrication process. Allowing for these contingencies in my scheduling, hopefully have most of the issues can be resolved quickly for a strong production run of the kits.

The final design is about 90% solid on the design and component list. Decisions are still being made a final decision on the actual case for this kit. Contributors thoughts on final parts and components and even some specialty modules that have been useful to your personal projects and still considered in the final decisions.

Taking a risk producing this kit locally will add to the overall cost of construction. Working with a couple of different overseas manufacturers and designers for prototypes over the past year not being happy with quality and lack of control over production using these suppliers it will be better to produce these locally in the US. Additionally US construction also warrants safer chemicals and a more "green" construction. Helping build the US economy and help some local businesses as much as possible, does increase the price compared to overseas outsourcing. With this said, I know that you will not be able to buy this magnitude of parts and components and have them shipped for a lower price. Using US manufacturing will increase the price, but it will also increase the quality and production rate needed for this project.

The format and design of the support website is also being developed throughout this campaign. The DuinoKit.com community website will need collaborators to post their projects and join the DuinoKit online community to share their experiences for a fully integrated learning environment. Obviously, nobody can post their Duinokit project without a kit. As mentioned before, there is a very strong support network and community documentation already available for learning the fundamentals of Arduino building and programming. The DuinoKit will include a book for learning as well.
