About this project
Ever jump into a swimming pool that looks refreshing only to discover that it feels like a warm bath?!?!
This is exactly what used to happen to us every summer until we figured out that cycling the warm water through the air will cool the temperature significantly. You've all seen the evaporative, or mist style, coolers at public venues or outdoor patio restaurants. Passing water through the air, no matter how hot it is outside, will reduce the temperature.
Let's take a trip to the past... Most of us may remember being a kid and spraying the water hose straight up. Recall how cold the water felt as it fell on top of you no matter how hot the outside temp was. This is the same phenomenon experienced with Arctic Rain.
How Arctic Rain Works
The swimming pool water is cycled through the filter system and back into the pool through the return jets. Arctic Rain replaces the return fitting and redirects the water into the air allowing the ambient air to cool the water. The chilled water lands back into the pool and is sent back again through the system and into the air for further cooling. The units won't produce a fine mist that will evaporate but heavier droplets that produces the great sound of a gentle rain while cooling the water. (The sounds heard in the embedded video are all real sounds produced by Arctic Rain units and have not been edited.)
Tried and True...
We have been successfully producing Arctic Rain by hand and had unbelievable response and results from customers. However, we feel that everyone should be able to enjoy a cool refreshing swimming pool. To do this, we need to increase volume exponentially to keep up with demand. Pictured below are our first two successful designs. Series I offered a custom fit but as a result, could not scale to demand. Our second design (appropriately named Series II) offers a universal fit and better water flow. We are happy to offer a pair of Series II units as a great value reward. While you will see good results from a single pair, most individuals have chosen to install one unit for each pool return jet for the best performance.
A Step Ahead
In an attempt to improve our product, we've gone back to the drawing board one final time! We have a patent filed already for the latest version of Arctic Rain. As a reward for all levels $20 and above, we invite you to participate in the vote for a creative name. The winner will receive a pair of Arctic Rain cooling units! For now, let's just call it "Series III" :-)
Series III will only be offered in clear and transparent light blue colors initially, and consist of a flexible body to prevent breakage. Our goal with funds raised will allow us to manufacture a new custom elbow fitting to provide an easier and more universal fit. As for the manufacturing process of the elbow fitting, we have had discussions and negotiated contracts with manufacturers to produce every component of Arctic Rain. If we are able to reach our funding goal, we will have sufficient capital and confidence to underwrite the investment in the tooling for the new elbow fitting and the minimum order quantity required to mass produce Arctic Rain
Funds well spent...
We have a plan for all funds raised:
- $400 Kickstarter fees of approx 8%
- $3,500 towards product tooling ($10,200 total cost - 65% funded by Arctic Rain)
- $1,100 for raw materials necessary to produce larger quantity to meet demand
Any additional funds graciously received will be put to good use. We plan to use any funds outside of our initial goal to purchase additional materials for a larger go-to-market production run and...Advertising Advertising Advertising! Our future marketing strategy consists of web site optimization as well as attractive marketing material for use with our Retail and Distribution partners. We feel that funds spent building our Web and Retail presence as well as end customer visibility using door-to-door advertising, bill boards, and vehicle advertising are must to be successful.
We can't thank you enough for you confidence and support!!
Risks and challenges
Since proving the functionality and taking in all customer feedback, we've created what we feel is the best and most effective design. We have cut our teeth with our first two designs of Arctic Rain. We took this approach deliberately to minimize risk and are excited to go-to-market with a strong product and presence because of this. While there is risk in everything business, our approach at expanding organically allowed us to work through many of the growing pains. However to identify possible risk, we will have to point to Mother Nature herself. Our product relies on hot weather. While this is a normal occurrence in the south, the weather in the other parts of the country can effect the demand for Arctic Rain.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
