We are Electronic Maniacs and this is our Inaugural Kickstarter!
Thank you for taking time to view our Kickstarter page!
Electronic Maniacs is a group of professionals, hobbyist and enthusiasts who love to innovate new things. We have been trying hard to bring something really useful to our day-to-day life.
Door keys play a vital role in everyone's routine life. However there are those occasions where they can be just plain annoying. For example you might need to let a pal or contractor into your house when you are on vacation, give a relative access to your holiday home, or simply have lost your key!
But this is not the case anymore
Through this kickstarter project, we would like to present you U-Lock a GSM enabled USB door locking system.
What is U-Lock?
U-Lock is GSM enabled device, which uses USB or phone to unlock your door. The U-Lock comprises of Faceplate and Electronic housing that are connected together. Faceplate comprises of USB Slot, push button and Status LEDs. The Electronics Housing encloses the GSM module along with MCU and door opening circuitry.
How does U-Lock work?
The owner emails the encrypted code to the user and U-Lock gets updated with the access details. Now the user only needs to copy the encrypted file onto their USB flash drive and insert it in U-Lock to open the door.
U-Lock rings the registered mobile when push button on the faceplate is pressed. The owner can talk to the visitor and unlock the door by pressing a number on their phone keypad.
The owner can simply send a text message to U-Lock to unlock the door
Method 4 (Only when stretch goal is met):
The user can also manually enter the access code on the keypad provided in U-Lock to unlock it. Access Code could be used to set which days and times of the week users are allowed to have access.
Features in U-Lock:
- USB Key to unlock your door
- GSM features helps to access your door remotely with ease
- Multiple access so that you and '5' of your family members can unlock the door remotely using GSM feature.
- Could also be used to speak to the person outside/inside the house from any where
- U-Lock can revoke or add access any time to your door
- Faceplate components are easily replaceable
Once we came up with this idea, we started developing our design. However we were in need of a platform to bring our product into reality. Hence we decided to start a kickstarter campaign for our innovative project. The raised money will be used for the production run and development of U-Lock.Successful funding will also serve as a morale boost to our team of engineers to come up with different innovation in near future.
How long will it take?
With prototype developed, every backer will be notified about the progress and development regularly. We have successfully implemented and tested the GSM feature for our U-Lock . We are currently developing a prototype to test USB key and Keypad* in our U-Lock.
Where we are?
We were working hard from day one. We have successfully developed and tested the GSM module along with relay for door unlocking.
- GSM module for U-Lock successfully tested with the built prototype
- Door actuator tested with the built GSM module
- Initial development of U-Lock model enclosures
- Design and development of USB interface
- Software development for USB interface
- Testing the U-Lock final model
- Cost-engineering for manufacture
- Melody option in U-Lock
- Key-pad interface in U-Lock
- SD card to copy user preferred melody
- 3D Enclosure design
*Stretch Goals pledge amount will be updated after successful funding
Weekly updates will be posted on this kickstarter page from the day when campaign starts till successful production. Separate blog site will also be created upon successful funding and regular updates will be sent over through email to all our backers.
Upon successful funding (how sooner it will be),new stretch goals will be updated and our team will work hard to include any new features apart from what is being listed.
The Final version of U-Lock with all features will be notified to all our backers by July'14 and we would deliver your own kit by November'14
Risks and challenges
There are always unforeseen issues when developing a product in quantity. Generally in our experience these are caused by poor production techniques by 3rd party assemblers and delays due to component sourcing.
We are experienced at both of these in our professional life so know who to use and what components to use!
We always vow only to use components available from at least 3 standard suppliers and engineer a strategy for when manufacturers end-of-life IC's. For example with respect to MCUs we closely follow our vendor's roadmap so we can offer a direct functional or footprint replacement if and when necessary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
