Who is Archie Shepp? Archie Shepp is a composer, singer, politically engaged poet, playright and most importantly, a legendary saxophonist. Shepp is best known for his socially engaged music from the 1960’s and 1970’s in which he highlights the social injustices faced by African Americans.
Following the Attica Prison riots in 1971, in which 39 people were killed following a rebellion of black inmates over better living conditions, Archie Shepp released jazz masterpiece Attica Blues in which he takes a stand for black civil rights.
The Project Forty years after the release of Attica Blues, Archie Shepp revisits this monument of jazz history with a new big band composed of a mix of experienced artists and young jazz musicans from the United States and France. The new big band will perform classics from the original album as well as newly added compositions with the objective of releasing a live album + a documentary on the Attica riots.
This big band includes 26 artists:
Archie Shepp (vocal, sax), Jimmy Owens (conductor), Amina C. Myers (piano, choir), Famoudou Don Moye (drums), Tom McClung (piano), Pierre Durand (guitar), Marion Rampal (choir), Cécile McLorin Salvant (choir), Stéphane Belmondo (trumpet), Izidor Leitinger (trumpet), Christophe Leloil (trumpet), Olivier Miconi (trumpet), Sébastien Llado (trombone), Michael Ballue (trombone), Simon Sieger (trombone), Romain Morello (trombone), Reggie Washington (bass), François Théberge (tenor sax), Virgile Lefebvre (tenor sax), Raphaël Imbert (alto sax), Olivier Chaussade (alto sax), Jean Philippe Scali (baryton sax), Louise Rosbach (cello), Antoine Carlier (alto violin), Steve Duong (violin), Manon Tenoudji (violin).
The Process After leaving the big music labels, Archie Shepp now releases his albums through his independent label Archieball ensuring creative freedom and making music more accessible to everyone.
Archie Shepp is eager to transmit his experience and these timeless values to the new Attica Blues orchestra. The Archieball team needs your help in order to complete the new chapter of the Attica Blues Band adventure and is asking for the direct involvement of those people around the world who share our passionate love for music. We need to raise $20,000 to complete this project. This includes:
- Recording & Mastering Fees
- Transportation and technical setup at the two concert venues
Concert dates are set, musicians are ready to go and the only thing left to do is finalize the budget!
The Attica Blues Band will record two concerts on June 14 & 17 in Chateauvallon and Les Nuits de Fourvières, Lyon in France.
As usual, the cover art will be done by Wozniak, world renowned illustrator and long time friend of Archie Shepp and the album will be distributed by Harmonia Mundi. *The estimated release date: Fall of 2013.
Kickstarter has offered independent labels such as Archieball the opportunity to exist and for amazing projects to see the light of day. Without your donations, the new Attica Blues Project could not happen and we thank you for your help and support!
