About

The Belmont Hills Mall: The world's first 3D-Printable two-story shopping mall for 28 mm miniature war-gaming and tabletop RPGs!

The Belmont Hills Mall can be assembled in infinite arrangements relying on a unique snap together floor, wall and store front locking system. The locking mechanism relies on friction locking pegs. You can build your very own version of Belmont Hills shopping center, designed with 28 mm scale miniatures in mind.

Nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains of western Pennsylvania, right off the winding,  rain soaked Pennsylvania turnpike, lies the Belmont Hills Mall. There's plenty to see with the latest  in 1983 fashion adorning nearly every shop,  making the shopping center a hot spot for nearby patrons.  Shopping malls are also a hot spot for the undead, clinging to some part of their former lives, and a fortress for those who fight them. The Belmont Hills Mall  offers a range of commodities, supplies and defenses for any of the living who are looking to take on the zombie hordes.

The mall and its stretch goals are the result of my ongoing passion for building miniature terrain and my new love of zombie war-gaming. As a lifelong western Pennsylvanian, zombie pop-culture is in the air here. This project is very personal and close to my heart, and I am hoping to share my custom 3D art with all the fellow hobbyists who share that same passion for building and painting miniature terrain. The process has taught me so much about 3D digital modeling, and I hope to continue learning to improve my skills as a 3D-artist. Your generous donations will go directly to the material and printing time costs associated with creating a project of this type.  While the initial Kickstarter goal is to cover the basic prototyping and testing costs, my overall goal is to complete the mall in its entirety by adding additions such as parking lot with shopping cart returns, exterior lights, a full food court, store interiors and much more. It is with your support that I can complete the entire mall as I had envisioned, and share the results with you, the project sponsors, directly!  This is not a physical product, but digitally sculpted models delivered in STL file formats that can be 3D-printed on a home 3D-printer.

In addition to the basic mall set shown here, which all files have been completed for, there are also plenty of exciting additions in the Belmont Hills Mall stretch goals to bring even more fun, and detail to the finished shopping complex. For the higher level pledges, there are also additional city buildings that can  be unlocked to construct the nearby town of Belmont Hills! These added City Builder stretch goals include an 1980s arcade, a sporting goods shop, a diner, a classic bank, a two-story brick city building and a police and fire station!  Thank you very much for your support; I could not do this without your help!

The Building Basics:

The entire 3D-printable mall complex is designed to support three large anchor department stores (a total of six available), a second level with balconies and escalators, as well as support columns for snap together catwalks and a full roof with skylights. There are currently 10 interior store fronts available in addition to six individual anchor stores of different variety, modeled on historical photographs from retailers of the early 1980's era. In total, the Mall Rat pledge, provides 15 individual retailers

Whether you want to build a single story, a second floor with catwalks and balconies, or build the entire roof with skylights, it is up to you!

All of these STL files are intended for personal use only, and were made for artistic and educational purposes. Printing a few models out for a friend is alright, but please do not sell or distribute any of these STL files, or printed models online or commercially.  The 3D models associated with the Kickstarter campaign are not affiliated with any of the retailers, both existing or defunct, presented in the finished pieces.

As a Kickstarter pledge,  you will gain exclusive access to these files through your support! These files are not available anywhere else!

In total, the Belmont Hills Mall complete set features nearly 100 individual STL model files for ultimate customization on your home 3D printer! The best part of the Belmont Hills Mall STL file set is that it is intended to be printed in multiple parts, allowing it to be assembled at any size!

3D-Printing Settings and Sizes:

No single part currently exceeds 180 mm on any print axis, making it printable on nearly any moderate sized 3D-printer bed. Wall tiles at 100 percent are 10.8 cm high by 3.6 cm wide. The largest pieces do not exceed 17 cm at 100 percent.  All 28 mm scale models should be printed at 80 percent of the full size STL, allowing for even  smaller dimensions on most home 3D-Printers.

In addition, each part is a single shell, and has been designed to be printed without additional support material. For ensured quality, all models have been prepared and tested using  Netfabb, Meshmixer and Cura. With a 30 percent infill, most parts can be printed in under 15 hours on my CR-10 with no support material at full size.

All final pieces will be printed and personally inspected by me before the STL files are distributed. Estimated delivery will be within 1-2 months of the campaign ending. Any additional mall stretch goals will be delivered as they are completed through the first several months of 2019. All dates are tentative as quality inspections continue. Continual Kickstarter updates will keep you notified as to when each file set is ready and will be released.

STRETCH GOALS:

While building this project, there were so many finer details I just didn't have time to add. The stretch goals are where the real magic can happen to complete the mall as I had originally envisioned. Everyone who pledges at the "Anchors Aweigh" level and above will be eligible for all the free "Belmont Hills Mall"  stretch goals. All higher level pledges will also receive "City Builder" eligibility, receiving additional structures to complete the town around the mall.

Risks and challenges

There is little risk in receiving the main file sets presented here, barring any disaster that occurs to me, my hardware, or some unforeseen tragedy. All of the files presented in the Belmont Hills Mall set have been completed and have been checked in multiple software packages for their printability. They will be distributed shortly after the campaign once the final inspections are completed on printed files. The main challenges include finding the time to complete the expansion models, and ensuring every single file adheres to high quality standards I have set going forward. I will personally address your questions, comments and 3D-printing needs. I am proud of the art I have created, and want to ensure you are satisfied with each finished piece!
