I've always loved poetry, and I've written tons of it, but there isn't really that much money in it. Publishing a physical book of poetry is nearly guaranteed to be a money loser, since you have to put up your own money to make the books, and format them, and buy cover art... But its also been the most requested project for me to work on. Thankfully for everyone who has ever wanted my poetry in a real, tangible book, you now have the opportunity to help me cheat the system, and create something wonderful.
Cascade- A Book of Poetry by James Wylder
By funding this project, you'll be supplying the funds to buy cover art for, edit, and create physical paper books, you know, the kind made from trees, and ship them to people of the book of poetry "Cascade!".
If you already own the ebook of Cascade, you'll be getting a much much larger book. Its revised, expanded, bigger, and better-- about double the length it used to be, not to mention the book has the chance to expand further if stretch goals are met.
Who is Writing it? Who is Drawing the Cover?
James Wylder is the author of the play "Cryptos" performed during Hanover College's 2011 Fall Theatre Season. He has had poetry published in Kenning's Literary Magazine, and self published his ebook of poetry "Cascade!". He is also one of the co-founding members of Shotgun Angel Games LLC.
The cover art shall be done by Emily Hempstead, an artist in her last semester at Hanover college. She recently had a gallery showing about her webcomic, Strata, which is available to read at http://charilyprojects.com .
Stretch Goals-- and a Low Entry bar.
The goal of $110 dollars covers the basic costs of producing the book in its basest form. That's the goal-- and I'm not going to jack up the minimum goal in a slimy shot to solicit more cash. However, as I raise more money, I can do more with this book, and improve it for everyone.
DONE! $175 -- Cascade will be available for purchase in print from amazon, and for order by bookstores, all around the world.
ZOEY'D! $200 -- Cascade will become a double book! Along with the poetry, the book will contain the complete text of my never published and unproducable play "Paper Gods".
COMPLETED! $300 -- Cascade will be submitted to the Library of Congress, will receive a Library of Congress Control Number, making it eligible to appear in libraries across America!
ADDED! $400 -- A new chapter of poems, "Elegance" will be written and added to the book, made entirely of poems in structured forms, including Sonnet, Haiku, and Villainelle.
Beaten!$450 -- An Audiobook version of Cascade will be produced and made available as a new $25 reward tier!
$600 -- 'Paper Gods' will be performed as a live reading and recorded.
$700 -- There will be an advertising campaign online for Cascade when it launches!
$800 -- I will take 'Cascade!' on a promotional reading tour.
$1000 --A full-cast recording of "Paper Gods" will be produced as a narrated audio drama!
And more will come if we hit these goals! There is plenty to be done with this book, its just a matter of how much interest comes its way. if you have ideas for stretch goals-- message us! We'd love to hear from you.
Some Examples of My Work
Yours, in effigy
Willow tree, Redden me
When deep in your branches
You sound off the Morning with
The cuk-cuk of the squirrels
And the pip-pip of the birds
Who hide their seeds in their bellies
And relegate your hair ribbons to nests
And the dying Morning calls to your
Hands as you spread your spindly fingers
Across the sky and call
“Yes it is good!”
Into a holy night
Painted in tongue
And rosy smirk
To Love a poet
Is to love a moment
To love someone staring at the wall
Talking about caterwauling butterflies
-leaving your soliloquy on the page
My draining desire stretches out
Like water pooling on scorched earth
Till you turn and annotate
Our drowning into the loam of the world
If I could write like you:
I’d be able to make Sun-drops
And the layer of rain on your eyes
Out of parenthesis
And I would revel in what is
Beyond talent, beyond the abrev. of love
And I would sit below
Your branches and catch the
Leaves when fall comes
Like a tide of the abrupt way
We both die someday
And I wish I could write like you
Climbing up the garden wall
I’m a child in your sweet aged smile
Like a Vine and Nursery Rhyme
In your beige and flower print dress
You slit the stockings below the knees
And I don’t feel good
About how I hew pews from your branches
Just to wait for your hymn
Your white limbs stretch over the horizon
With too few branches to block out the sun
Yet you complain about shadows
And the pain in your corpuscles
And though my sap leaks
Into your very roots
I just want to hear you scream
And the drip- drip- drip
As you loose your leaves.
Japan, Oh God, Japan
Why is it
When I type "tentacle" into Google
I get not a happy Octapus
but horrors I can barely comprehend
Even with your cherry blossoms
I curl into the fetal position.
Risks and challenges
If the project becomes very very successful, fulfilling orders might take longer than initially anticipated, especially if some of the more time intensive rewards become more popular then I anticipate.
There are of course also the possibility of production delays, as this is my first time creating an in print book, I may run into unexpected problems producing it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
